Use Trick as a frontline distraction: draw enemy attacks with taunts, bolster his defense, and spend his remaining actions on attacks or control. A useful build option from an unofficial game database pairs the Heavy specialization’s Bulwark and Intimidating Posture with Trick’s For My Brothers talent; Soldier’s Brutal Strike is an optional control tool. The exact ability values are version-sensitive, so check the current costs and ranks in your game.
What Trick’s role is
Trick is most useful when he makes enemies focus on him instead of less durable squadmates. In the unofficial database’s recommended build, Heavy provides Bulwark to taunt nearby enemies and raise Trick’s defense for the turn. Intimidating Posture adds a taunt when his blaster hits a target, while For My Brothers is a once-per-mission recovery option.

This is a tactical approach, not an official developer-prescribed build. You can respec authored squadmates into other classes, subject to exotic-class restrictions, and their unique abilities persist, according to PC Gamer’s Star Wars Zero Company guide.

Each operator receives three action points (AP) per turn. Movement, attacks, and many abilities use AP from the same pool, so moving can leave fewer AP for attacks. The official StarWars.com beginner’s guide explains the three-AP turn and the role of Advantage in combat.

Advantage is a separate resource gained when operators deal damage. PC Gamer reports that Advantage abilities do not consume AP. That means Trick can use an Advantage-costing ability and still use his AP for movement, blaster attacks, or an AP-costing ability, provided he has the required resources.
A practical turn with Trick
- Check the threat and your resources. Decide which enemy poses the greatest danger to the squad, then check Trick’s AP and current Advantage.
- Use Bulwark if available and appropriate. The database lists Bulwark as costing 4 Advantage; it taunts enemies in an area and increases Trick’s defense for the turn. These values come from database entries read from build 25513890, and can change with updates or unlock ranks.
- Otherwise, shoot a dangerous target. With Intimidating Posture, a blaster hit taunts its target. The database says a repeater spends all available AP on one burst, while a blaster pistol can make separate one-AP shots. Separate shots can give you more chances to apply the hit-triggered taunt, if the weapon and current ability rank allow it.
- Spend any remaining AP on defense or control. The database lists Unstoppable at 1 AP. If Trick has the Soldier option, Brutal Strike is listed as a 1-AP rush that Dazes one target, making it an option when an enemy needs to be disrupted.
- Use Rocket Strike when area damage is worth the resource. The database lists it at 10 Advantage and once per combat. Because Advantage abilities do not use AP, using it does not itself reduce Trick’s AP for the turn.
Ability availability, effects, and costs may differ by current patch or rank. Check Trick’s in-game ability panel before committing to a turn.

When to choose Heavy or Soldier
| Build direction | What it does | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Heavy | Bulwark draws nearby enemies and raises defense; Intimidating Posture makes blaster hits taunt their targets. | When you want Trick to absorb attention and protect more vulnerable squadmates. |
| Soldier option | Brutal Strike rushes and Dazes one target for 1 AP, according to the database. | When interrupting or disabling a priority enemy matters more than drawing attacks. |

A taunt is useful only if Trick can survive the attention it attracts. Watch enemy positions and the rest of the squad’s exposure before using him as the focal point. The official beginner guide says a downed operator receives an injury; if permadeath is enabled, three injuries can mean death. You can adjust difficulty outside combat and restart missions, and the guide advises checking objectives because eliminating every enemy is not always required.
