Star Fox controls depend on which game you are playing. The Switch 2 remake, SNES original, Star Fox 64 3D, and Star Fox Zero use different control schemes, so first match your instructions to the game and system. For the Switch 2 game, start with standard button controls and adjust the Y-axis in Options if steering feels reversed. In the SNES original, double-tap L or R for a barrel roll. In Star Fox 64 3D, tap B to recenter gyro steering. In Star Fox Zero, begin with Training before taking its dual-stick and motion-aiming controls into battle.
What are the controls for Star Fox?
There is no single button layout for every Star Fox game. The original SNES game, Star Fox 64 3D, Star Fox Zero, and the Switch 2 game each handle movement and aiming differently. Check the game’s full title and the system you are playing on before following a control tip: a button that fires in one installment may have another job in a different one.

The table gives a quick orientation. Where an exact mapping is not established here, it says so rather than guessing; use the selected game’s manual or on-screen controls for the full layout.
| Game and platform | Input approach | Useful beginner detail |
|---|---|---|
| Star Fox, Switch 2 | Standard button controls are available; mouse targeting is an option in Campaign and Challenge. The detailed button mapping is not stated here. | Use the in-game Options menu, opened with +, to adjust settings such as Y-axis direction and reticle visibility. |
| Star Fox, SNES | Type A uses the directional pad, A, B, L, R, X, and Y; alternate configurations are available on the in-game Control Select Screen. | Double-tap L or R for a complete barrel roll. |
| Star Fox 64 3D, Nintendo 3DS | Type A uses the Circle Pad or system tilt for steering, with gyro steering available. | Tap B to recenter gyro control if it feels misaligned. |
| Star Fox Zero, Wii U | The GamePad uses two sticks and motion aiming. | Use Training to get used to piloting and aiming before a battle. |
These differences are more than button-placement details. The Switch 2 game offers adjustable settings and optional mouse targeting; the 3DS version can use tilt steering; and Star Fox Zero divides piloting and aiming across the GamePad controls and its motion sensor. Learn the scheme for your installment rather than trying to transfer a remembered input from another game.

How do you control Star Fox on Switch 2?
Nintendo describes the Switch 2 game as a remake of the Nintendo 64 game. It supports standard button controls, and it has separate options for mouse targeting and for co-op in which one player pilots while another handles gunning. Mouse targeting and that co-op arrangement are available only in Campaign and Challenge modes, not as a universal control method across the game.
Start with standard controls and adjust the settings
- Open Options during play by pressing +. Nintendo notes that some options cannot be changed during Battle Mode, so set up before entering that mode if the setting you want is unavailable.
- Choose the Y-axis direction that feels natural. If moving the control upward makes the Arwing climb when you expected it to dive, or the reverse, try the other direction. The setting applies to the Arwing, Landmaster, and Blue-Marine.
- Turn on the reticle if you want a visible reference for aiming. A reticle can make it easier to understand where your shots are directed, especially while you are still learning to steer and target at the same time.
- If you want to try mouse targeting, select it in Campaign or Challenge and adjust its sensitivity in Options. It is an alternative input method, not a requirement for playing.
- Enable button combos if you prefer the original game’s button-combo behavior. This is a preference to try, not a setting every new player needs to enable.
Make one change at a time, then play long enough to tell whether it helped. If you reverse the Y-axis and change sensitivity simultaneously, it becomes harder to identify which adjustment improved or worsened your control. The game also offers cockpit camera rotation; change that only if the cockpit view itself is making it harder to orient yourself.
Do you need the Nintendo 64 Controller for Nintendo Switch?
No. The Nintendo 64 Controller for Nintendo Switch is an optional way to get a more authentic original-game feel; it is not necessary for standard play or for learning the remake. Nintendo says the controller is sold separately and requires a paid Nintendo Switch Online membership to purchase. The Switch 2 game also supports standard button controls, so begin with the controller you already use if that is more comfortable.

The input depends on the installment. In the SNES original, rapidly double-tap L or R to execute a complete barrel roll. Nintendo’s SNES manual says the roll can reflect some laser attacks and shake off enemies clinging to the ship. Holding a roll can also help you pass through a narrow space, but that is different from the rapid double-tap that performs the complete maneuver.

In Star Fox 64 3D, the Type A controls also use a double-tap of L or R for a barrel roll. Do not assume that instruction applies identically to every game in the series. The available Switch 2 control details establish that the remake has standard controls and options, but do not give an exact barrel-roll button sequence; check its in-game control information rather than relying on the SNES mapping.
For a beginner, use a roll when you have a reason to evade or respond to an attack, not simply because the input is available. In the SNES manual’s account, the defensive effects are specific: a complete roll may reflect some laser attacks or dislodge an attached enemy. It does not establish that every shot or enemy can be countered this way.
How do you boost and brake?
The terms “boost” and “brake” also vary by game. In the SNES original’s Type A layout, X activates the speed boost and B activates the retro-rocket. In Star Fox 64 3D, X boosts and B brakes. In Star Fox Zero, pushing the right stick forward or back handles boost and brake, respectively, while the left stick is used for piloting. The Switch 2 mapping is not specified here, so consult the game’s control display for its exact inputs.

On SNES, the control layout also assigns A to a Nova Bomb, Y to the laser blaster, and the directional pad to movement. The controls are configurable through the in-game Control Select Screen, so these are Type A mappings rather than a promise that every player’s chosen layout will match.

In Star Fox 64 3D, the manual’s Type A layout assigns A to the laser and Y to bombs. The Circle Pad or system tilt handles turning and climbing or diving, while B and X serve as brake and boost. That is a compact set of actions to learn first: steer and change altitude, fire, then add braking, boosting, and bombs when you can use them deliberately.
How do I change or invert the controls?
For the Switch 2 game, open Options with + and set the Y-axis direction that feels right. That option affects the Arwing, Landmaster, and Blue-Marine. The same menu includes reticle visibility, cockpit camera rotation, mouse-targeting options and sensitivity, and a button-combo option. Mouse targeting is limited to Campaign and Challenge, and some settings cannot be changed during Battle Mode.
For the SNES original, use the in-game Control Select Screen to choose among its control configurations; the manual’s specific mappings are for Type A. Star Fox 64 3D’s listed steering method can use the Circle Pad or system tilt, and the manual describes gyro steering. If the gyro alignment drifts, return the system to a neutral position and tap B. This is a recentering action, not the same thing as changing an axis setting.

How do you aim in Star Fox Zero?
Star Fox Zero is built around the Wii U GamePad’s separate views and input methods. The left stick pilots the ship, the right stick forward or backward controls boost and brake, ZR fires, motion controls aim at enemies, and A transforms the ship, according to a Nintendo developer interview. Because motion aiming is distinct from ordinary steering, it can take practice to coordinate the GamePad view with what you see on the TV.
A practical first session
- Choose Training from the game’s menu. Nintendo’s manual provides Training as a way to learn or refresh Arwing piloting, and the developers recommended it for players who had not played before.
- Begin by focusing on basic piloting with the left stick. Get comfortable keeping track of the TV and GamePad views before adding more actions.
- Practice using motion controls to aim while keeping the ship under control. Then add ZR firing so that aiming and shooting become one coordinated action.
- Once those basics feel manageable, practice the right stick’s boost and brake movements and use A to transform when appropriate.
This order is a practice suggestion based on the documented controls, not a claim that the game requires a particular training sequence. Training is useful precisely because the GamePad scheme asks you to coordinate several kinds of input; there is no need to rush directly into a battle while those controls still feel unfamiliar.

Identify the game before acting on a tip
Check both the title and platform. “Star Fox” may mean the SNES original or the Switch 2 remake, while Star Fox 64 3D and Star Fox Zero have their own layouts. A button-specific instruction should always be read in the context of its game and selected control configuration.
Change one setting at a time
On Switch 2, test the Y-axis first if climbing and diving feel backward. Then consider the reticle or mouse sensitivity if aiming is the problem. Separate adjustments make it easier to recognize whether the issue was steering direction, visual reference, or aiming sensitivity. If a setting is locked in Battle Mode, return to a mode or point in play where Options allows it.

Use the team’s information in Star Fox 64 3D
Peppy offers strategic advice and hints about enemy weak points. During a boss fight, Slippy displays the boss’s shield gauge when he is flying with the team. Pay attention to those cues instead of treating every encounter as a test of reflexes alone. Helping Falco early makes a branch to the harder route more likely; that is route guidance, not a requirement for someone learning the controls.
Learn defensive actions as actions with limits
A barrel roll can have a specific defensive role in the SNES game, but Nintendo’s manual says it can reflect some laser attacks, not every attack. Likewise, a boost or brake is a movement tool rather than a universal solution to every hazard. Learn what each action does in your game, then use it in situations where that function matters.
If steering, aiming, and firing all feel difficult at once, simplify the task. Practice movement first, use a visible reticle where the game offers one, or choose a dedicated training mode where available. The point is to build familiarity with the actual control scheme rather than trying to master every action in a single encounter.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhich Star Fox control scheme should you start with?
If you are playing the Switch 2 remake and do not already know the original Nintendo 64 controls, begin with standard buttons. Adjust the Y-axis if necessary, turn on the reticle if it helps you aim, and try mouse targeting only if you want an alternative and are in Campaign or Challenge. You do not need the separately sold Nintendo 64 Controller.
If you are playing the SNES original, start with Type A or choose another configuration on the Control Select Screen. Learn the movement and firing controls before relying on the roll, boost, retro-rocket, or Nova Bomb. For Star Fox 64 3D, learn the Type A actions and remember that B can recenter gyro steering. For Star Fox Zero, start in Training, because its dual-stick piloting and motion aiming are distinctive enough that instructions from the other games do not translate.
