Stanford discovers way to save ghostly corals from the brink

A Stanford laboratory study found that severely bleached coral fragments recovered after brief contact with healthy genetically identical fragments. Beneficial algae crossed within three days, and full recovery took about seven weeks, but the one-to-one donor requirement currently limits reef-scale use.

A bleached coral may still be recoverable. In a laboratory study reported in Science Advances on October 14, 2026, Stanford researchers restored severely bleached fragments by briefly touching them to healthy fragments from the same clone. The white fragments began receiving beneficial algae within three days and returned to full visible health in about seven weeks—the fastest recovery documented in the study’s account.

What Stanford’s coral experiment found

The team worked with the coral species Pocillopora damicornis. For each test, researchers paired one bleached fragment with one healthy fragment taken from the same original animal, making the two pieces genetically identical.

Ten pairs were assembled. Five bleached fragments were placed so they physically touched a healthy partner. The other five were kept a few millimeters apart as controls. Every touching pair recovered. The separated bleached fragments died.

Contact did not instantly cure the coral. It provided a biological bridge that allowed the damaged fragment to regain the organisms and nutrients it had lost during bleaching.

How physical contact reverses bleaching

Genetic identity enables fusion

Genetically identical coral fragments recognize one another when they meet and fuse at the contact point. Stanford microscopy showed microscopic channels lining up between the fragments after contact.

Algae cross into the bleached fragment

Those channels created a route for beneficial microscopic algae, along with nutrients produced by the algae, to move from the healthy fragment into the bleached one. The researchers could see algae inside the formerly white fragment within three days.

The algae then multiply rapidly

Once transferred, the algae—not continued physical contact alone—drove most of the later recovery. During the second week, algae in the recovering fragments doubled about every four days. That growth rate was roughly ten times faster than the rate observed in wild corals.

Timeline and results

Observation Result Condition
Algae visible in bleached fragment Within 3 days After contact with a healthy genetically identical fragment
Contact generally needed About 1 week In some tests, 5 days supplied enough algae for recovery to continue after separation
Full laboratory recovery About 7 weeks Touching pairs
Algal growth in week two Doubling every 4 days Approximately 10 times the rate measured in wild corals
Experimental sample 10 pairs Five touching pairs and five separated controls

“While bleached corals may be dying, they are not dead yet,” said Danny Collins, the study’s lead author and a Stanford oceans PhD student. The result supports treating some bleached colonies as living patients rather than automatically writing them off.

Why the method matters

Coral bleaching occurs when heat or another stress causes corals to lose the symbiotic algae that supply much of their energy. A bleached colony can survive if conditions improve and its algal partners return, but recovery after a heatwave is often slow or fails entirely.

Fiorenza Micheli, a Stanford marine ecologist and study coauthor, said bleached corals are often considered a lost cause because recovery is so slow when it happens at all. The experiment reveals a natural recovery pathway that can move algae into a damaged fragment quickly, then let those algae expand inside it.

The work also illustrates why a coral’s genetic identity matters. A healthy fragment from a different colony may not fuse with the bleached piece, so simply placing unrelated corals together would not reproduce the experiment.

Can this save corals on a reef today?

Not yet. Stanford’s result is a laboratory observation, not a demonstrated reef-restoration treatment. The exact procedure requires a healthy genetically identical copy for every bleached coral being treated. Producing, identifying and positioning those matching fragments across a whole reef would be impractical with current methods.

  • Scale: The experiment used 10 fragment pairs in controlled conditions, not a natural reef community.
  • Donor requirement: Each bleached fragment needs a healthy clone as its algae source and physical partner.
  • Contact: The fragments must touch for long enough to establish the transfer; a nearby but separated donor did not work in the controls.
  • Recovery: Even after successful transfer, full recovery took about seven weeks in the laboratory.
  • Environmental uncertainty: The study does not establish how the method performs amid changing temperatures, currents, predators, disease or competition on a reef.

These limits mean the finding should not be interpreted as a field-ready cure or as evidence that every bleached coral can be restored.

What researchers may try next

Stanford says the team will investigate approaches that do not require continuous donor contact. One possibility is collecting beneficial algae from healthy corals before a heatwave and delivering larger batches to bleached corals afterward. Such a strategy could avoid maintaining a one-to-one healthy-clone donor for every damaged fragment, but the study has not yet shown that it works.

Future evaluations would need to answer several practical questions:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • How precisely must algae and recipient corals be genetically matched?
  • Can algae be collected, stored and delivered without losing their beneficial function?
  • How long must a donor and recipient remain in contact under field conditions?
  • Do treated corals survive after separation over months and years?
  • Can the process be scaled beyond laboratory tanks without harming donor colonies?

What the discovery means for coral conservation

The immediate contribution is a proof of biological possibility: severely bleached coral fragments can recover rapidly when supplied with compatible living partners. It shifts attention from bleaching as an irreversible endpoint toward the mechanisms that let a coral regain its algal community.

For restoration scientists, the most useful insight is the sequence: genetically identical fragments fuse, algae move through microscopic connections within days, and rapid algal multiplication sustains recovery after the initial contact period. That sequence offers specific targets for future interventions rather than a generic instruction to “help” bleached reefs.

For reef managers and the public, the responsible conclusion is narrower. Protecting corals from the heat and other stresses that cause bleaching remains essential. Stanford’s experiment offers hope and a possible tool for assisted recovery, but it does not yet provide a practical whole-reef rescue method.
