Standalone Express.js: What Developers Should Know Before Switching

Standalone Express.js is an architectural choice, not an official deployment mode. Here’s how to assess whether it fits and what to check when upgrading to Express 5.

No: there is no evidence here that every developer should stop using standalone Express.js. Express describes itself as a minimal, flexible Node.js framework whose core can be extended with middleware. Whether that approach fits a project depends on its requirements—not a universal rule against using Express by itself.

What does “standalone Express.js” mean?

“Standalone Express.js” is not a defined Express deployment mode in the official documentation. In ordinary usage, it may mean building an application around Express without adopting a larger framework or another layer of conventions. That describes an architectural choice, not a separate Express product.

The phrase also does not tell us which concern is at issue. A developer might be asking about application structure, middleware, maintenance, or a requirement that Express does not address directly. Those concerns need to be evaluated against the actual project; the phrase alone does not establish that Express is unsuitable.

What Express provides—and what its design leaves to the project

Express’s official homepage calls it a minimal and flexible Node.js web application framework, with a thin core that can be augmented through middleware. This design allows teams to add capabilities as needed, but it also means the framework’s description alone does not promise a particular set of conventions or a complete application architecture.

The homepage displayed Express 5.2.1 when accessed on October 7, 2026. That is a dated observation, not a guarantee that it remains the latest version. Check the official Express homepage for the current version and project information.

How to decide whether Express fits your application

Instead of treating “standalone” as a verdict, compare the approach with the needs of the application and the team that will maintain it. Useful questions include:

  • Does Express and its middleware ecosystem cover the features the application actually needs?
  • Would the team benefit from more built-in structure and conventions, or does it prefer to choose those pieces independently?
  • Can the team support the architecture and dependencies it selects over the life of the project?
  • If considering a move, what code, middleware, and operational practices would need to change?

These are decision criteria, not evidence that one framework is best for every project. The available official documentation does not establish a universal replacement for Express or a comparative performance, cost, or migration-success advantage for another framework.

What to check before upgrading an Express 4 application

Moving to Express 5 is an upgrade within Express, not a decision to leave it. The official guide says Express 5 requires Node.js 18 or higher. It retains the basic Express 4 API, but the major release includes breaking changes, so an existing application may not work unchanged.

  1. Confirm the runtime: Verify that the environment running the application uses Node.js 18 or later, as required by the Express 5 migration guide.
  2. Review the breaking changes: Read the guide’s listed changes and identify affected code and dependencies before upgrading.
  3. Apply codemods where appropriate: Express provides migration codemods, but they do not replace checking the resulting code or validating application behavior.
  4. Run tests and the application: Address test failures, then exercise the app to find unsupported methods or properties and other behavior changes.

The migration guide is the source for the runtime requirement, compatibility warnings, and codemods. Treat the upgrade as a compatibility and behavior check, not as a guaranteed automatic conversion.

What the headline does—and does not—establish

A DEV Community result lists an article titled “You have to stop using standalone express.js…” by Yass1n, with a displayed posting date of Sep 11; the year is not established in the accessible result. The article body could not be retrieved, so its specific argument and examples cannot be verified. The headline alone does not show that Express is deprecated or that all projects should replace it.
