A Stage 1 faja is commonly described as softer and more accommodating for the early postoperative period; a Stage 2 faja is commonly described as firmer and worn later. Those labels are not a universal medical schedule, however. There is no single official transition date for Lipo 360: your surgeon’s instructions, healing, and garment fit determine what to wear and when.
What changes between Stage 1 and Stage 2 fajas?
In common faja terminology, “Stage 1” refers to an early recovery garment, while “Stage 2” refers to a firmer garment used later as swelling changes. These descriptions come from faja guides, not a standardized clinical definition. Some surgeons do not use a stage system at all.

| Comparison | Stage 1, commonly described | Stage 2, commonly described |
|---|---|---|
| Place in recovery | Early postoperative period, when swelling and fluid drainage may be present | Later period, after the initial swelling has settled enough for a change |
| Feel | Softer and more accommodating | Firmer, with higher compression in the guide’s description |
| Timing example | One faja guide describes roughly the first three to four weeks | The same guide describes a possible transition around weeks three to four, followed by later wear |
The timing and garment descriptions in the table are examples from a secondary guide, not a rule for every patient or surgeon (faja guide; additional faja guidance). A plastic surgery practice gives a different example: its surgeon says patients typically wear Stage 1 for at least three weeks before moving to Stage 2 (practice article). Neither example establishes the right switch date for your Lipo 360 recovery.

No universal Stage 1-to-Stage 2 date or two-stage schedule specifically for Lipo 360 is established in the official patient guidance reviewed here. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) says a compression garment may help minimize swelling and support healing, and advises patients to ask their surgeon how long to wear it (ASPS recovery guidance). The Aesthetic Society gives four to six weeks as general compression-garment guidance after liposuction, without dividing that period into Stage 1 and Stage 2 (The Aesthetic Society’s liposuction guidance).

That four-to-six-week period is general liposuction guidance, not a personal prescription or a guarantee that a particular patient should change garments at a particular week. Your operation, treated areas, healing, and surgeon’s plan govern the schedule.
How swelling affects faja fit during recovery
Swelling changes over time, so the garment that fits at one point may not fit the same way later. The Aesthetic Society says swelling after liposuction peaks around 48 hours, mostly subsides within two to three weeks, and slight residual swelling may persist for up to four months (The Aesthetic Society). ASPS describes swelling beginning to subside around weeks four to five, with improvement continuing after week six (ASPS recovery guidance). These are general recovery descriptions; they do not determine when an individual should switch fajas.

If swelling goes down and your garment becomes too loose, ask your surgeon whether it needs refitting. Do not independently size down, tighten the garment, or add padding to change its compression.
How should a faja fit after surgery?
ASPS advises that a compression garment should fit snugly enough to do its job, but not so tightly that it causes discomfort or restricts breathing. If it causes pain or discomfort, contact your plastic surgeon; if it becomes too loose as swelling decreases, ask about refitting (ASPS garment-fit guidance).

The garment should also match the treated areas and the plan your surgical team gave you. A full-body compression garment is one style sometimes used when multiple areas are treated, but confirm coverage, size, and timing with your team rather than treating a fashion faja as equivalent to a prescribed postoperative garment.
What should you ask your surgeon about a faja?
Use your discharge instructions as the authority on your own garment plan. If they do not answer these questions, ask the surgical team:

- FINDING THE PERFECT FIT: Colombian fajas sizes vary! To ensure the perfect fit, it's crucial to measure your waist and hips accurately. To measure your waist, wrap the measuring tape around the narrowest part of your waist, usually above the belly button. To measure your hips, wrap the measuring tape around the fullest part of your hips, ensuring the tape is level and not too tight. - When may you remove the garment for bathing, and when should it be put back on?
- When, if at all, should you change from your current garment to another style or compression level?
- Which areas must the garment cover, and is a full-body style appropriate for your treated areas?
- What should you do if the garment causes pain, feels uncomfortable, restricts breathing, or becomes too loose?
- How long should you wear it, and when can you resume normal activity and exercise?
ASPS specifically recommends asking how long to wear the pressure garment and when normal activity and exercise can resume (ASPS recovery guidance). Do not stop compression or switch to a tighter garment based only on a generic online calendar. Direct sudden or concerning changes to your treating team.

Compression is only one part of aftercare. The Aesthetic Society notes that redness, swelling, and fluid drainage can occur after liposuction; it advises rest during the first few days, walking soon after surgery, and avoiding strenuous exercise for four to six weeks (The Aesthetic Society’s liposuction guidance). ASPS describes week one as a period for monitoring pain, swelling, and bruising while significantly limiting activity. Patients may start feeling better in weeks two to three while still limiting exercise and activity; bruising should be gone and swelling should begin to subside around weeks four to five (ASPS recovery guidance). Follow your own surgical team’s activity instructions, which may differ according to your procedure and recovery.
