Stacey Waaka is a Black Fern, and a profile of her scrunchie project connects it with women expressing their identities. But the available reporting does not verify that Waaka herself said she is “bringing femininity to the rugby field” or explain that as her stated intention. The clearest on-field lipstick quote in the sources belongs to US rugby player Ilona Maher—not Waaka.
What is actually reported about Stacey Waaka?
World Rugby’s 2025 New Zealand team media guide identifies Waaka as a Black Fern. A New Zealand Herald profile, titled “Stacey Fluhler Scrunchies: ‘You can be an athlete and embrace your true self’,” reports on her scrunchie project and encourages women to express their identities: The New Zealand Herald profile.
That reporting supports a connection between Waaka, a personal project, and self-expression. It does not establish that she wears lipstick on the field, that she has made a particular statement about femininity during play, or that the phrase in this article’s original title was her own explanation.
Who made the on-field lipstick statement?
The explicit statement about wearing lipstick on the rugby field comes from Ilona Maher, a US rugby player, in an interview with mindbodygreen—not from Waaka. Maher said: “I think for me, being that rugby athlete in the limelight, I want to show that I can be this very big, powerful person, but I can also wear lipstick on the field to show that you can bring your femininity on the field too.” Read the mindbodygreen interview with Maher.

Maher’s explanation offers a clear example of one player framing athletic power and feminine presentation as compatible. It should not be presented as Waaka’s view or as proof that Waaka has adopted the same approach.
Can you be feminine and play rugby?
Yes. Playing a physically demanding sport does not require a woman to give up a feminine identity, nor does femininity have to look the same for every player. Maher’s interview illustrates one athlete’s way of expressing that idea; Waaka’s scrunchie project, as described by the Herald, points to self-expression beyond the match. Neither example sets a standard for how rugby players should look or present themselves.

There is a broader reason these questions can matter. A peer-reviewed qualitative study published online July 8, 2024, examined women rugby players’ experiences of gender, embodiment, tackle performance and safety. It describes constraining gender norms, the devaluing of women’s athletic achievements and unequal playing conditions, while also discussing players’ agency in challenging expectations and reshaping the sport. Those are findings about participants in the study, not claims about Waaka personally. See the study, “Women shouldn’t play rugby” – the gendered and embodied experiences of women players in rugby union.
