ABC7 reported that shortly after 12:45 p.m. on Monday, September 4, 2023, a person entered a home without permission in the 2100 block of North Meade Avenue in Belmont Cragin. Police told ABC7 that a 26-year-old resident fired at the person, striking him twice in the chest. ABC7’s September 5 report said the wounded man fled, was found nearby, and was taken to Loyola Hospital in serious condition.
Who died, and who fired?
ABC7’s September 6 follow-up identified the man who was shot as 39-year-old Alexis Quiles of Chicago. The report said he died Tuesday afternoon, citing Chicago police and the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office. In the account matching this location and date, the resident fired and the alleged intruder later died—not the reverse. ABC7’s follow-up reported that charges were pending before Quiles died.
What remains unclear?
The reports describe the entry as unauthorized, but that allegation is not a final legal finding. The available reporting does not establish whether charges were later filed or what happened in any subsequent court proceedings. ABC7 also reported that neighbors heard four to five shots and that no one else was injured; those details are attributed to its reporting, not independently confirmed here.
