Reserve income belongs to the issuer unless a separate arrangement provides otherwise. An exchange may share economics with an issuer and may separately offer rewards to eligible customers, but those are different payments with different payers, terms, and risks.
To work out what you might earn, identify who owes the payment, who receives it, where the money comes from, and what the applicable product terms promise. Issuer revenue or payments between business partners are not a reliable way to calculate a holder’s return.

Does holding USDC or USDT earn interest?
Not just because you hold the token. A stablecoin is designed to maintain a value, often against the U.S. dollar; that design and its reserve backing do not themselves create a contractual interest payment to each holder. A holder may receive a reward through a separate exchange or service program, but eligibility, rates, payment form, and conditions depend on that program.

Reserve income, revenue sharing, and holder rewards are different
| What the money is | Who earns or receives it | What it means for a token holder |
|---|---|---|
| Reserve income | The issuer earns interest and dividends on assets held in reserve. | It is issuer revenue, not automatically a payment owed to each holder. |
| Issuer-to-partner revenue sharing | An issuer may allocate some economics to an exchange or ecosystem partner under an agreement. | A business-to-business payment does not by itself give the partner’s customers a direct claim to that amount. |
| Holder-facing reward | An exchange or other service may pay an eligible customer under a separate program. | The program’s terms determine whether a reward is available, how it is funded, and whether it can change or stop. |
Reserve income belongs to the issuer unless another arrangement applies
Circle says it earns interest and dividends on assets in its reserve accounts and records reserve income gross before distribution costs. Its filing explains that, assuming a constant return rate, changes in stablecoin circulation change reserve assets and therefore reserve income. Neither the issuer’s income nor the size of its reserves tells a holder what return they will receive.
Revenue sharing is usually an agreement between businesses
Circle describes allocations to Coinbase based on USDC held on Coinbase after Circle’s issuer retention, as well as an ecosystem allocation after specified third-party participant payments. These are partner economics described by the companies; they are not evidence that every USDC holder receives a share.

A holder reward is a separate product relationship
The IMF describes financial incentives delivered to stablecoin holders through centralized exchanges, using Coinbase as an example. That model is distinct from the issuer’s reserve income and from an issuer’s contract with a distributor. Whether a particular customer receives anything depends on the service’s terms; the cited material establishes no general fixed rate or guarantee.

In its filing for the quarter ended June 30, 2026, Circle Internet Group, Inc. reported $324.6 million in distribution costs in connection with agreements with Coinbase. That is a company-level expense for the three-month period, not a payment of $324.6 million to individual USDC holders and not a measure of any holder’s APY.

The example shows that reserve income and partner sharing can exist at the same time. It does not allow a reader to infer an individual return from Circle’s revenue, distribution costs, or USDC circulation. A holder’s reward, if any, is determined separately by the terms of the service offering it.
Is an exchange stablecoin reward the same as issuer revenue sharing?
No. Revenue sharing describes a payment or allocation between an issuer and a business partner. A customer reward is a separate arrangement between the service and the customer. An exchange might receive economics under its issuer agreement and also operate a customer reward program, but one does not prove the other or determine the customer’s rate.

Before treating an offer as yield, check the exact legal entity making the promise and whether the benefit is cash, tokens, or points. Also check whether the return is contractual or discretionary, how it is funded, whether it is gross or net of fees, and whether it can change or end. Custody, counterparty exposure, withdrawal conditions, and eligibility can matter as much as the headline rate.

How U.S. law frames issuer-paid yield
The GENIUS Act contains a prohibition with a specific scope. Section 3(b)(11) states: No permitted payment stablecoin issuer or foreign payment stablecoin issuer shall pay the holder of any payment stablecoin any form of interest or yield (whether in cash, tokens, or other consideration) solely in connection with the holding, use, or retention of such payment stablecoin.

This is a rule about the issuer categories and payment-stablecoin conduct named in the statute—not a universal rule for every token, intermediary, product, or country. The Act also includes an implementation timeline, exceptions, and regulatory details. Its application to a particular product or date depends on the provisions and rules then in effect. The text alone should not be treated as resolving every intermediary reward design.
Separately, the SEC Division of Corporation Finance’s April 4, 2025 staff statement described “Covered Stablecoins” as crypto assets designed and marketed for payments, money transmission, or value storage; designed to maintain U.S.-dollar stability; and backed by low-risk, readily liquid assets intended to support on-demand redemption. The statement said: Further, we do not express a view regarding the application of the federal securities laws to ‘yield-bearing stablecoins,’ which are stablecoins providing holders with yield, interest or other passive income, whether in the form of regular payments or rewards, or in the form of ‘re-basing,’ which is a mechanism that automatically adjusts the total supply of the stablecoins.
That is a staff statement about the described category, not a blanket legal conclusion about all yield products. The existence of an exchange-delivered incentive also does not, by itself, establish how a specific program is classified under law.
Do not confuse redemption with yield
Reserve backing and redemption terms concern how a stablecoin is supported and exchanged for its reference asset; they are not the same as a reward on an account. The SEC staff statement says an issuer generally uses reserve assets to fund redemptions—that is, delivery of the stablecoin in exchange for the reference asset on a one-for-one basis. The IMF notes that redemption conditions may include registration, fees, or minimum amounts. Check the terms for the specific issuer and service rather than assuming every holder can redeem directly on identical terms.
Quick Recap
A practical way to evaluate a claimed stablecoin return
- Name the payer and recipient. Is the promise from the issuer, an exchange, a borrower, or a protocol—and is it owed to you or to a business partner?
- Find the funding source and terms. Distinguish reserve income from a partner allocation and a customer incentive. Check whether the reward is contractual or discretionary, and whether it is funded by fees, lending, or another arrangement.
- Read the rate and payment details. Confirm whether a quoted rate is current, variable, promotional, or guaranteed; whether it is gross or net of fees; and whether payment is in cash, tokens, or points.
- Check access and risk. Review custody, counterparty exposure, withdrawal and redemption conditions, fees, and any minimums or registration requirements.
- Confirm eligibility for your situation. Check the precise legal entity, your location, the product terms, and any balance or account requirements. A rate advertised to someone else may not apply to you.
