To share a web app running at localhost:8080, connect your machine to a public server with an SSH remote port forward, then use NGINX on that server to route a public HTTPS hostname to the forwarded port. SSH carries traffic back through the connection you opened; NGINX handles the public web request and can terminate TLS. This gives you control of the relay and routing, but you must operate the server, DNS, certificates, and access controls.
How the SSH and NGINX tunnel works
The setup joins two separate connections. Your local machine, where the app is running, initiates SSH to a server reachable from the internet. SSH asks that server to listen on a port and carries traffic arriving there back to the local app. NGINX receives requests for a public hostname and proxies them to that server-side listening port.

- Local app: the service listens on
localhost:8080on your machine. - SSH remote forward: the SSH client requests a listening port on the public server and forwards its traffic to the local app.
- Public HTTP routing: DNS points a hostname to the server; NGINX accepts the request and proxies it to the forwarded port.
- TLS: NGINX can serve HTTPS using a certificate valid for the hostname.
SSH is the transport back to the machine behind NAT; it does not configure public HTTP routing. NGINX performs that routing and can handle HTTPS. Its proxy module provides proxy_pass to select an upstream and proxy_set_header to set or modify request headers.

- A publicly reachable server that permits SSH remote forwarding, with SSH and NGINX configured.
- A local HTTP application and its listening port, such as
localhost:8080. - A domain and DNS records resolving the public hostname or wildcard hostname pattern to the server.
- A TLS certificate covering the hostname pattern if the shared page should use HTTPS. One approach is a wildcard certificate issued through ACME DNS-01 validation.
- An access-control plan: decide who should be able to open the page and how the app or proxy will enforce that restriction.
For a hostname pattern that assigns a subdomain to each allocated port, wildcard DNS and a certificate covering that pattern are useful. The server, firewall, DNS provider, certificate automation, SSH policy, and NGINX build all affect the exact deployment; verify them for your environment rather than treating one example as a universal recipe.

Open a tunnel with an allocated remote port
OpenSSH can allocate a free remote port when the requested remote port is 0. For an app listening locally on port 8080, an example command is:
ssh -N -R 0:localhost:8080 web02.luffy.cxHere, -R requests remote forwarding, 0 asks the SSH server to choose an available port, and -N tells the client not to run a remote command. The forwarding destination, localhost:8080, is reached from the SSH client’s machine. The example uses the SSH server name web02.luffy.cx; substitute a server you administer and a destination that matches your application.

The allocated port is needed to connect NGINX’s upstream to the forwarded listener. SSH server policy must allow remote forwarding, and firewall or server configuration must make the relevant listener reachable by NGINX. The command alone does not configure DNS, HTTPS, NGINX, or authorization.
Route a public hostname through NGINX
In the example pattern, a hostname such as p<port>.ssh.example resolves to the public server, and NGINX proxies it to http://127.0.0.1:<port>. Replace the placeholder notation with a hostname and the actual allocated port in your configuration. The NGINX server block must match the intended hostname, and its upstream must point to the port opened by SSH.

NGINX’s proxy module documentation explains how to pass requests to another server and documents proxy_pass and proxy_set_header. Configure forwarded headers deliberately: if the application needs the original host or client address, set the appropriate upstream headers and make the application trust them only when they come from your proxy. Accepting identity headers directly from arbitrary clients can allow spoofed client information. If the app routes by Host, ensure the upstream receives the value it expects.
For HTTPS, use a certificate valid for the public hostname pattern and configure NGINX’s TLS listener accordingly. The NGINX SSL module documentation describes HTTPS support; it notes that SSL support requires OpenSSL and must be enabled in the build configuration. Confirm the installed NGINX version and build options rather than assuming every package is compiled identically. The example uses ACME DNS-01 validation for a wildcard certificate, but certificate issuance and renewal depend on your DNS and certificate tooling.

Protect the application and plan for its behavior
A public tunnel makes the local service reachable by anyone who can reach its public route unless you add effective access control. A hard-to-guess hostname is not authentication. Use the application’s login or an appropriate proxy access control, and avoid placing secrets in a public URL where possible. Expose only the intended service and review what data the page or app can reveal.

For long-lived requests, streaming, or other nonstandard HTTP behavior, check NGINX proxy timeouts and buffering against the actual application. The basic forwarding example does not establish suitable production settings for every app. Test the routes and application behavior you intend to expose.
Choose between OpenSSH, frp, and a hosted tunnel
These options solve related problems but place responsibility in different places. There are no comparable performance measurements in the cited material, so speed or reliability should not be inferred from this comparison.

Choose based on whether you want to operate the public endpoint yourself, what protocols and hostname routing you need, and how you will control access. OpenSSH plus NGINX is a straightforward fit when you already administer a reachable server and want to own its routing. A project with more proxy features may suit a different self-hosted setup; a hosted service avoids some server administration but introduces provider dependence.
