For most handheld gaming PCs, an internal SSD is the primary storage, while a microSD card is the easiest way to add removable space. SSDs can load games faster, but the difference depends on the device, card, and game. Check your handheld’s card interface and SSD form factor before buying: Steam Deck lists UHS-I microSD support, while the 2023 ROG Ally lists UHS-II and a specific M.2 2230 SSD.
Is an SSD faster than a microSD card for handheld gaming?
Generally, an internal SSD is the faster storage option, but there is no single load-time difference that applies to every handheld or game. ASUS publishes two SSD-versus-SD loading-time pairs for the 2023 ROG Ally: 26.86 seconds on SSD versus 27.92 seconds on SD, and 33.05 seconds versus 34.52 seconds. The page associates the examples with Cyberpunk 2077 and Control, but its visible text does not clearly map each title to a timing pair. These are ASUS’s own examples, not an independent, broad benchmark, so treat them as illustrations rather than a performance guarantee. ASUS ROG Ally (2023)

Actual results can vary with the game, card, device, and workload. A card’s speed rating alone does not establish how quickly a particular game will load on your handheld.

Steam Deck LCD and OLED
Valve lists microSD expansion with UHS-I support on both the Steam Deck LCD and OLED specification pages. Buying a card rated for a faster interface does not mean the Deck will use that higher interface speed. Valve lists the OLED with 512GB or 1TB NVMe storage, and the cited LCD page lists 64GB, 256GB, and 512GB models. These are listed configurations, not stated maximums for card or SSD upgrades. 2023 ROG Ally
ASUS specifies UHS-II for the 2023 ROG Ally’s microSD reader and a 512GB PCIe 4.0 NVMe M.2 2230 SSD. Those specifications apply to the 2023 model documented by ASUS; do not assume the same SSD dimensions or card interface for another handheld or ROG Ally generation. When a microSD card makes more sense
- You want removable storage that is easy to swap or move between compatible devices.
- You want to keep less frequently played games separate from the handheld’s internal library.
- You prefer adding storage without replacing the internal drive.
Those are convenience advantages, not a promise that every game will perform identically from a card. Confirm the reader’s supported interface for your model before paying extra for a higher-rated card.
When an internal SSD makes more sense
- You want the device’s primary storage to hold more of your installed library.
- You prioritize loading performance, while recognizing that the size of the difference varies by workload.
- You are considering a replacement or upgrade and have verified the exact model’s supported drive and service procedure.
For example, the 2023 ROG Ally specification calls for an M.2 2230 NVMe drive; that does not establish compatibility with a longer M.2 SSD. Valve’s cited Steam Deck specification pages list configurations and card support but do not provide a general end-user SSD replacement procedure. Check model-specific service guidance before opening a device or buying a replacement drive.

How to compare capacity and cost
The official specifications cited here do not establish current retail prices for microSD cards or replacement SSDs. Compare current local prices for compatible products at the same capacity, and note the retailer, currency, and date because prices change. A price-per-capacity calculation can help when the capacities are genuinely comparable, but factor in compatibility and any effort or service required to replace an internal drive.
Do not confuse the handheld’s launch price with the cost of storage. ASUS announced 2023 ROG Ally launch prices of US$699 for the Ryzen Z1 Extreme model and US$599 for the Ryzen Z1 model; those historical console prices are not current prices and say nothing about the cost of an SSD or microSD card. A practical way to decide
- Identify the exact handheld and generation. Do not rely on a product family name alone when checking compatibility.
- Check its published storage specifications. Match a microSD card to the reader interface and an SSD to the supported form factor and interface.
- Choose based on how you use the device. Favor a card for easy removable expansion; favor internal SSD capacity when you want a larger integrated library and have confirmed upgrade compatibility.
- Compare current prices at equivalent capacities. Include any replacement effort in the value comparison rather than assuming the cheapest price per gigabyte is the best fit.
