SSD vs. HDD for Storing Video: Which Is Better for Your Budget and Workflow?

An SSD usually suits active editing and portable work; an HDD is often the practical choice for large archives. Your footage, interface, budget, and backup plan determine the best setup.

For active video editing and portable work, an SSD is usually the better fit; for large archives and backup copies on a tighter capacity budget, an HDD is usually more economical. Neither is universally faster, safer, or cheaper: the right choice depends on your footage, editing workload, drive and computer interfaces, portability needs, and how you protect your files. Many workflows use both—an SSD for current projects and an HDD for archived footage and an additional copy.

SSD vs. HDD for video storage: the practical differences

An SSD stores data on flash memory and has no spinning disk. An HDD stores data on rotating magnetic platters. Those designs shape the usual trade-off: SSDs are commonly chosen for responsive access, transfers, and portability, while HDDs are commonly chosen when a large amount of storage at lower cost matters more than speed.

That is a buying guide, not a guarantee about any two products. Actual throughput depends on the specific drive, its connection, the host computer, and the work being done. A headline interface speed is not the same as sustained performance in your editing workflow, and a drive cannot exceed limitations elsewhere in the connection chain.

Need Likely fit What to check
Active editing, fast transfers, or portable field work External SSD Drive and computer interface compatibility, plus whether the drive can sustain the throughput your footage and editing workload require.
Large media library, archive, or additional copy on a tighter capacity budget External HDD Capacity, connection compatibility, and how you will maintain another independent copy of valuable footage.
Large production with shared capacity or specific speed or redundancy needs Multi-drive RAID The RAID mode, usable capacity, failure trade-offs, and an independent backup plan.

Choose storage around your workflow

Active editing and field work: favor an SSD

An external SSD is a sensible starting point when you regularly move footage, work from a portable drive, or want a speed-oriented workspace for current projects. Before buying, check the supported connection on both the drive and the computer, and consider the workload rather than assuming every SSD will deliver the same real-world result. Your editing software, host interface, and footage requirements all matter.

  • Get NVMe solid state performance with up to 1050MB/s read and 1000MB/s write speeds in a portable, high-capacity drive(1) (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device & other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
  • Up to 3-meter drop protection and IP65 water and dust resistance mean this tough drive can take a beating(3) (Previously rated for 2-meter drop protection and IP55 rating. Now qualified for the higher, stated specs.)
  • Use the handy carabiner loop to secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind.
  • Help keep private content private with the included password protection featuring 256‐bit AES hardware encryption.(3)
  • Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C

An SSD can also be useful as a working drive for projects that will later move to a larger archive. That does not make it a backup by itself: a project stored only on one portable SSD still has only one copy.

Large archives and capacity-focused storage: favor an HDD

A high-capacity external HDD is often the practical choice for keeping a large media library or storing completed projects when access speed is less important than capacity and cost. HDDs trade speed for a role in mass storage. If an HDD is your only archive copy, however, a drive failure or loss can still take the footage with it; keep another copy on a separate device or system.

  • Always Fast: No slowdowns for large file transfers. With SLC caching (25% of current available capacity allocated as high-speed cache), this external SSD delivers steady 10Gbps for transfers within the cache capacity

Use a hybrid setup when both priorities matter

If your budget permits, keep active projects on an SSD and copy completed or less frequently used footage to an HDD. This separates the speed-oriented working set from capacity-oriented storage without pretending that either device alone covers every need. Maintain a further independent copy of important footage rather than treating the working drive or archive drive as sufficient protection.

How much space does video editing need?

Resolution alone does not determine file size. Codec, bitrate, recording settings, and shooting time all affect how much footage consumes. Seagate’s 2025 planning guidance gives these approximate storage needs per hour; they are estimates, not guaranteed sizes for every camera or project.

Footage example Approximate storage per hour Qualification
HD (1080p) ProRes 422 Roughly 50–100 GB Seagate planning estimate, 2025.
4K About 300–400 GB Seagate says this is especially applicable to RAW or ProRes 4:2:2; actual size depends on codec and bitrate.
6K Typically 600 GB–1 TB Seagate planning estimate, 2025.
8K 1–2 TB or more Seagate planning estimate, 2025; codec and bitrate affect the result.

Editing space must cover more than camera originals. Proxies, temporary renders, and multiple export versions also take room. Seagate says these can double or triple storage requirements in some workflows; treat that as planning guidance rather than a rule for every project. Estimate your own footage from recording duration and settings, then add room for the extra files your workflow creates.

Can you edit 4K video directly from an external drive?

It can be possible, but “4K” alone does not tell you whether a particular external drive and connection will be suitable. Codec, bitrate, editing workload, drive performance, interface, and computer all affect the result. An SSD is generally the more natural choice for an active, speed-sensitive project, but the label “SSD” is not a substitute for checking the drive and host connection against your actual needs. The available guidance does not establish a universal minimum speed or guarantee for editing 4K from any external drive.

Where RAID fits—and what it does not replace

A multi-drive RAID can suit larger production workflows that need shared capacity or a particular balance of performance and redundancy. The RAID mode matters: it changes both risk and usable capacity.

  • RAID 0: Can improve speed, but failure of one drive can mean losing the array.
  • RAID 1: Mirrors data across drives, trading usable capacity for redundancy.

Neither mode is an independent backup. RAID redundancy does not protect against every cause of data loss, and a separate copy on another device or system is still important for valuable footage.

How to make the decision for your budget

  1. Estimate capacity: Use your recording format and shooting time, then account for proxies, renders, and exports.
  2. Separate working storage from archive storage: Decide which projects need to be immediately available for editing and which can be kept on capacity-focused storage.
  3. Check the whole connection: Confirm that the drive and host computer support compatible interfaces, and assess performance for the actual workload rather than relying on a headline number.
  4. Plan copies separately: Decide where a second copy of valuable footage will live. Do not count RAID alone as backup.
  5. Compare current models and prices: Cost per terabyte and product availability vary by model, capacity, and date. There is no universal current SSD-versus-HDD price comparison; verify the particular products and prices you are considering.

What the speed and price claims can—and cannot—tell you

Manufacturers provide useful product and planning guidance, but claims about a specific drive should not be generalized to every SSD or HDD. For example, Samsung announced its portable T5 EVO SSD in 2023 with capacity up to 8 TB and claimed transfer speeds up to 3.8 times those of an external HDD. That is Samsung’s claim about that product, not an independent test or a universal SSD-to-HDD speed ratio.

Likewise, without a controlled comparison of particular drives, interfaces, and editing workloads, a broad claim that one type will always deliver a given speed advantage or price per terabyte is not established. Compare the actual models you might buy, their supported connections, and the needs of your workflow.
