Moving a game from an HDD to an SSD can shorten storage-bound loading and may reduce pauses while a game streams assets from a drive that cannot keep up. It will not reliably fix every freeze, raise frame rates in general, or produce the same improvement in every game and PC.
What changes when a game moves from an HDD to an SSD?
A game reads data from storage when it starts, loads a level, or needs assets such as textures and geometry during play. If the game is waiting for the HDD to provide that data, an SSD can reduce the wait. Microsoft describes DirectStorage as technology designed to reduce loading and support the streaming of detailed assets; the actual result depends on the game and the rest of the system. That mechanism matters for two different symptoms: a long loading screen and a pause during play. Faster storage can help either when the game is waiting on storage, but it does not guarantee a visible change. There is no established, representative figure for how many seconds or what percentage an HDD-to-SSD move saves across games and PCs.

Will an SSD reduce in-game freezes or stuttering?
It can help with repeatable pauses caused by asset streaming when the drive is the limiting part of the pipeline. But “freeze” or “stutter” describes what you see, not what caused it. A pause may have another cause, so changing storage is not a universal fix.

When storage is a plausible cause
- Pauses recur as the game enters a new area or brings in assets, particularly when the game is installed on an HDD.
- The game appears to wait while loading or streaming content. Microsoft describes compressed assets being decompressed as they load, illustrating that storage is one stage in a wider process. Microsoft’s DirectStorage 1.1 overview
When storage may not be the cause
- Shader compilation: Games can compile shaders at launch or just in time. Microsoft says that just-in-time compilation can cause stuttering, and explains that compiled shaders depend on the game, GPU, and driver. An SSD upgrade does not address the underlying compilation work. Microsoft’s explanation of Advanced Shader Delivery
- Other system limits: CPU or GPU constraints and other system issues can also cause poor performance or pauses. Faster storage alone is not a general cure for them.
- Low frame rate: An SSD should not be treated as a general frame-rate upgrade. It can reduce storage waits without making the CPU or GPU render frames faster.
Does NVMe make a bigger difference than SATA?
It depends on the workload and whether the game uses a storage feature such as DirectStorage. Microsoft says benefits may be visible on different kinds of storage, while an NVMe SSD maximizes I/O performance for DirectStorage on a compatible system. The game must implement the technology, and the PC must support the drive; NVMe is not a requirement for any possible benefit. Microsoft’s DirectStorage announcement
That guidance does not establish a universal gaming ranking or a matched, representative HDD-versus-SATA-versus-NVMe result. Choose between SATA and NVMe based on your PC’s compatibility, your games and workload, and the drive you can install—not on a promise that NVMe will always shorten a loading screen or eliminate stutter.

What does Microsoft’s “nearly 3x faster” result mean?
Microsoft reported nearly 3x faster scene loading in a DirectStorage 1.1 sample using GPU decompression rather than CPU decompression. The illustrated sample took 0.8 seconds with GPU/GDeflate and 2.36 seconds with CPU/Zlib. These are results for that sample and those decompression methods; they are not an HDD-versus-SSD comparison or a typical expected upgrade result. Microsoft cautions that performance varies with workload and hardware. Microsoft’s DirectStorage 1.1 overview

- Identify the symptom. Separate long startup or level loads from pauses during asset-heavy play, shader-compilation stutter, and a consistently low frame rate.
- Check the game and its requirements. Look for an SSD requirement and whether the game supports DirectStorage; a feature only helps when the game implements it.
- Check your PC before choosing a drive. Confirm the supported interface (SATA or NVMe), form factor, and available capacity in your device documentation.
- Set expectations by cause. If storage is holding up loads or asset streaming, an SSD is relevant. If the issue is shader compilation or another system limit, storage may not resolve it.
For an internal SSD for gaming, the practical choice is the fastest compatible option that fits the games and capacity you need. A SATA SSD can still be appropriate for a PC without NVMe support; an NVMe SSD can maximize DirectStorage I/O performance on a compatible PC. Neither choice guarantees a specific improvement.
