For most Windows PCs, an SSD is the better choice for Windows and frequently used apps because it is faster and noiseless. An HDD can still make sense when you need substantial local space for files. Before upgrading, check your PC maker’s specifications: the drive’s physical size and interface must be supported by your particular computer.
SSD vs. HDD at a glance
| What matters | SSD | HDD |
|---|---|---|
| Windows and app responsiveness | Faster than an HDD, according to Microsoft’s storage overview. | Slower than an SSD, according to Microsoft. |
| Noise | Noiseless, according to Microsoft. | Microsoft’s comparison does not specify an HDD noise level. |
| Local file capacity | Choose capacity according to the space your apps and files need; no universal capacity is established here. | Can suit a need for a large amount of local storage; current comparative prices and price per capacity are not established. |
| Upgrade fit | Depends on the PC’s supported drive type, form factor and interface; check the manufacturer before buying. | Also depends on the PC’s supported drive type, form factor and interface; check the manufacturer before buying. |
Which drive should you choose?
Choose an SSD for Windows and everyday apps
If you are selecting a drive for the operating system and programs you use often, an SSD is the stronger default. Microsoft describes SSDs as faster and noiseless, and says they are the most common drive type today. That comparison is qualitative; it does not establish a specific speed advantage for a particular PC or drive.

Consider an HDD when local capacity is the priority
If you need a large amount of space on the PC for files, an HDD may fit that need. The right choice depends on what you keep locally and how often you use it. Microsoft notes that light web browsing may call for less local storage, while large video or file work may call for more. Cloud storage can also reduce how much space you need on the computer itself.

Compare prices for the capacity you actually need
Current SSD-versus-HDD prices and price per capacity are not established here, so there is no reliable basis for declaring one type the better value in every capacity. Compare current prices for drives compatible with your PC, and weigh them against whether your priority is responsiveness or more local space.

How much storage does a Windows PC need?
Microsoft lists 64 GB or larger storage device as a minimum Windows 11 requirement. This is a system minimum, not a recommended target for every person’s apps, files or updates. Plan for your own workload rather than treating 64 GB as a comfortable general-purpose capacity.
For example, someone who mainly browses the web and relies on cloud files may need less local space than someone who stores large video projects on the PC. The type of drive and its capacity are separate decisions: choose the drive type for the experience you want, then choose enough capacity for your local apps and files.

Does Windows 11 require an SSD?
No. The general Windows 11 minimum requirement specifies a storage device of 64 GB or larger, not an SSD. A separate, narrower requirement applies to games that use DirectStorage: Microsoft Learn lists an NVMe SSD, a compatible controller driver, and a DirectX 12 GPU supporting Shader Model 6.0 for that gaming use case. Do not treat that feature-specific requirement as a requirement for every Windows 11 PC.

Can you upgrade your PC’s storage?
Some PCs offer storage upgrade options, but compatibility is model-specific. Before ordering an internal SSD or HDD, consult the PC maker’s specifications or ask the manufacturer or a retailer. Confirm both the supported drive type and the physical fit and interface; an SSD is not automatically compatible just because it is an SSD.

- UPGRADE WITH EASE: Using the 870 EVO SSD is as simple as plugging it into the standard 2.5 inch SATA form factor on your desktop PC or laptop; The renewed migration software takes care of the rest
- Check the exact PC make and model, not just its brand.
- Confirm the drive form factor and interface supported by that machine.
- Verify whether the PC has an available storage slot or bay and whether any capacity limits apply.
- Buy a drive only after those details match. A 2.5-inch SATA SSD or an M.2 NVMe SSD should be considered only if the PC’s specifications support that type.
Plan carefully before replacing a drive
If you are moving Windows to a new drive, decide how you will preserve or restore your existing setup before removing the old storage. A clean installation is not the same as keeping your current files and programs: Microsoft warns that a clean install removes personal files, apps, manufacturer customizations and settings. Back up important files and choose a migration or reinstall approach that matches what you want to retain. See Microsoft’s Windows installation-media guidance before proceeding.
