How SSDs and HDDs affect gaming
The main gaming advantage of an SSD is faster access to game data, which can reduce loading times in titles that benefit from faster storage. Microsoft describes DirectStorage as a feature that improves game load times. The actual result depends on the game and the rest of the system; there is no single time or percentage that applies to every game.

An HDD may be adequate for games that do not require faster storage, but it is the less suitable choice when quick loading or newer storage-dependent features are priorities.
Does an SSD improve FPS?
Not as a universal rule. Frame rate is different from loading speed: Microsoft’s DirectStorage materials describe load times and storage I/O, not a general increase in FPS when moving a game from an HDD to an SSD. Choose an SSD for its potential loading and data-access benefits, not on the assumption that it will raise frame rates in every title.

When DirectStorage matters
DirectStorage is designed for high-speed storage such as NVMe SSDs, which can handle many small reads with minimal CPU overhead, according to Microsoft’s DirectStorage documentation. The feature works automatically when both the PC and the game are compatible, according to Microsoft’s Windows gaming page.
For games using DirectStorage, Microsoft specifies an NVMe SSD, the Standard NVM Express Controller driver, and a DirectX 12 GPU that supports Shader Model 6.0. These are requirements for that documented use case—not a requirement for every PC game, nor a guarantee that any SSD will enable DirectStorage.

Which drive should you use?
Choose an SSD for games you play often
Install frequently played games, and titles with storage requirements that call for it, on an SSD. Before buying an NVMe SSD, check that your PC or console supports the drive’s interface and form factor, and confirm the individual game’s storage requirements.
Use an HDD for bulk storage when suitable
An HDD can be a practical place for lower-priority games or other large files if your device and those games support it. Keep games with specific storage requirements on a compatible drive rather than assuming every title will work equally well from an HDD.

- Read the game’s own storage requirements.
- Verify that the drive type, interface, and physical form factor fit your PC or console.
- If you want to use DirectStorage, verify the NVMe SSD, Standard NVM Express Controller driver, and supported DirectX 12 GPU conditions Microsoft lists.
