SRT Files Explained: How the Format Works and How to Fix Common Errors

An SRT file is plain-text subtitle data with timed entries. See its format, a working example, and fixes for common errors involving timestamps, spacing, encoding, and styling.

An SRT file is a plain-text subtitle or caption file that pairs dialogue with the times it should appear and disappear. Each entry contains a number, a start and end timestamp, subtitle text, and a blank line separating it from the next entry. You can open or create one in a plain-text editor; the main pitfalls are timestamp punctuation, missing separators, encoding, and inconsistent formatting support.

What is an SRT file?

SRT means SubRip. It is a lightweight text format for subtitles and captions: the file contains text and timing information, while a compatible video player or service displays that text over the video. The format is widely used, but it has no official specification, so support for optional details can vary between applications. The Library of Congress describes the format and its structure.

Because an SRT file is plain text, you can inspect and edit it without special subtitle software. YouTube also identifies SRT as a basic caption-file type that can be edited with plain-text editing software. YouTube’s caption-file guidance explains its upload requirements.

What does an SRT file look like?

1
00:00:01,000 --> 00:00:03,000
Hello, world!

2
00:00:03,080 --> 00:00:05,080
This subtitle has
more than one line.

The first subtitle begins at one second and ends at three seconds. The second begins at 3.08 seconds and ends at 5.08 seconds. Each entry is separated from the next by a blank line. This basic structure is documented by the Library of Congress, Subtitle Edit, and the European Commission Audiovisual Service.

What each part of an SRT entry means

  • Number: The entry’s sequence number, starting at 1 in the European Commission’s guide.
  • Timing line: The start and end times, separated by a space, the arrow -->, and another space. In 00:00:01,000 --> 00:00:03,000, the subtitle runs from one second to three seconds.
  • Subtitle text: The words to display. Text may occupy more than one line.
  • Blank line: Marks the end of the entry and separates it from the next one.

The European Commission guide describes the numbering and spacing; the Library of Congress format description documents the timestamp and text structure.

How to open or make an SRT file

Open an existing file

Open the .srt file in any plain-text editor to read or edit its entries. If your computer opens it in a media player or another application by default, use that application’s Open With option and choose a text editor. Avoid a word processor that may introduce rich-text formatting or alter the file’s plain-text contents.

Create a basic file

  1. Open a plain-text editor and enter one numbered block per subtitle: sequence number, timing line, and subtitle text.
  2. Use a comma before the three millisecond digits in each timestamp, such as 00:00:01,250.
  3. Put a blank line between blocks. Number entries sequentially, beginning with 1.
  4. Save the file as plain text with an .srt extension. Use UTF-8 when the receiving service requires it; YouTube’s SRT upload guidance and the European Commission’s delivery guidance require UTF-8.
  5. Open the file in the intended destination or player and check that the text appears at the right times and characters display correctly.

YouTube’s caption-file guidance specifies plain UTF-8 for SRT uploads. The European Commission’s delivery guidance also requires UTF-8; follow the requirements of the service receiving your file.

Common SRT mistakes and how to fix them

Problem Why it matters What to check
A period instead of a comma before milliseconds SRT uses a comma, as in 00:00:01,250. A period is used in WebVTT timestamps. Replace the punctuation in each SRT timestamp with a comma.
Missing or altered timing arrow The timing line separates start and end times with -->; the European Commission guide specifies spaces on both sides. Use 00:00:01,000 --> 00:00:03,000.
No blank line between entries The blank line separates subtitle blocks. Add one empty line after each entry’s text before the next number.
Wrong or unsupported character encoding A destination may reject the file or display characters incorrectly if it does not accept the saved encoding. Use plain UTF-8 for YouTube uploads and check the receiving service’s current requirements.
Formatting tags look different or disappear Optional markup support is inconsistent. YouTube says its SRT support does not recognize markup, and Subtitle Edit warns that advanced SRT styling is not reliable across applications. For an upload, follow the destination’s rules; for playback, test the file in the player that will be used.
Changing .srt to .vtt without converting the contents WebVTT has its own header and timestamp syntax, so an extension change alone does not turn an SRT file into WebVTT. Convert the file’s structure and syntax, or export it as WebVTT using a suitable tool.

These format distinctions are described in the W3C WebVTT specification, the European Commission subtitling guide, YouTube’s upload guidance, and Subtitle Edit’s help documentation.

SRT vs. WebVTT: which should you use?

Choose the format requested by the website, player, or delivery workflow. SRT is a simple subtitle text format. WebVTT is a W3C-specified format for external text tracks associated with HTML’s <track> element; it can carry captions, subtitles, chapters, and other time-aligned data. WebVTT files begin with WEBVTT and use a period between seconds and thousandths, while SRT uses numbered blocks and a comma.

Consideration SRT WebVTT
Syntax Numbered blocks; comma before milliseconds Starts with WEBVTT; period before milliseconds
Web-page text tracks Not the format specified for HTML’s native <track> workflow Specified by W3C for external text tracks associated with HTML’s <track> element
Positioning and styling Optional formatting support varies by application Supports cue-positioning features defined by the W3C specification
Upload or playback choice Use when the destination accepts SRT Use when the destination or web workflow calls for WebVTT

See the W3C WebVTT specification for its cue syntax and positioning features, and check the destination’s current accepted formats before preparing a file.
