One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchTo reduce latency in an SRS HLS stream, shorten the encoder’s GOP/keyframe interval and encoding delay, then tune SRS’s hls_fragment and hls_window settings and use a player suited to low-latency HLS. SRS documentation estimates about 6–8 seconds with its example adjustments, but says the described HLS setup will not go below five seconds. If you need interactive, sub-five-second delivery, assess another protocol and test the full ingest-to-viewer path.
What latency can SRS HLS settings realistically achieve?
HLS divides video into segments, so it generally adds more delay than continuous streaming. The current SRS v8 HLS guide says its default 10-second slice and 60-second playlist can produce about 30 seconds of latency in some players, which may begin requesting from the middle of the playlist. With tuned settings, SRS estimates about 6–8 seconds; these are documentation estimates, not a guarantee or an independently measured result for your server. The guide says the described setup will not reduce HLS delay below five seconds. SRS v8 HLS documentation

Latency is end to end: encoder, SRS, ingest route, platform or CDN, playback client, and the viewer’s network all affect it. A server-side change cannot guarantee a specific viewer delay. SRS specifically notes that network jitter and player strategy can preserve delay, and that overly aggressive buffering can cause stalls, skips, or playback failure.
Tune SRS HLS step by step
Use the documentation for your deployed SRS version as the reference; do not paste an older configuration without checking that its options and defaults apply. Change one group of settings at a time so you can identify what helped or made playback less stable.

Shorten the encoder GOP or keyframe interval
Set the GOP/keyframe interval to about one second as a starting point, if compatible with your encoder and platform. SRS illustrates this with an OBS GOP setting and describes FFmpeg GOP in frame counts; the equivalent value depends on the frame rate and encoder. A shorter GOP can make usable segment boundaries available sooner, but verify stream compatibility and image quality. See the SRS HLS guide.
-
Reduce encoder-side delay
SRS’s OBS example uses the baseline profile and the
zerolatencytune. Treat those as options to evaluate, not universal requirements: profile and tune choices can affect visual quality, compatibility, and CPU load. Compare playback and encoder performance on the actual stream before keeping the change.Rank #2

Adjust SRS fragment and window values
The SRS example uses a two-second
hls_fragmentand a ten-secondhls_window. The guide notes that smaller values are possible, but reducing segment and playlist buffering too far risks stalls, skips, or failed playback, especially when the network is variable. Check the v8 guide and your installed version for the correct configuration syntax and behavior before changing these values.Special offer. Choose a low-latency-capable playback client
SRS names hls.js, ijkplayer, and ffplay as examples suited to lower-delay HLS playback, and cautions that players such as VLC may add more latency in the described setup. Player behavior varies by version, device, and configuration, so test with the actual client your audience will use rather than assuming that changing the server is enough.

Measure the complete path
After each set of changes, measure from the time media is sent to the time it is visible in the intended playback client. Record the encoder and settings, SRS version and configuration, protocol, player and version, network conditions, and observed delay. Repeat under realistic network variation; one measurement on a stable local connection may not reflect a remote viewer’s experience.
Sending an SRS stream to YouTube: distinguish ingest from playback
YouTube’s HLS ingest requirements are separate from SRS’s HLS server tuning and from the delay a viewer ultimately sees. YouTube says that choosing HLS turns off its “Ultra low-latency” option because HLS has higher latency than RTMP ingestion. Its HLS guide specifies TS segments lasting 1–4 seconds, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, HTTPS POST/PUT, and no byte range. Verify that your particular SRS-originated workflow meets YouTube’s requirements before relying on it. YouTube Help: Set up an HLS stream

If you are sending an OBS contribution feed to YouTube over RTMP, SRS documents RTMP as a common publishing/ingestion option. That does not establish the viewer-side latency YouTube will deliver: platform delivery settings and playback remain outside SRS alone. SRS RTMP documentation
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhen to consider a different protocol
If the target is below five seconds, tuning the documented HLS setup is not the answer. SRS describes HTTP-FLV, HTTP-TS, and WebRTC as options for lower-latency delivery scenarios than HLS, but switching protocols by itself does not guarantee a numeric delay. Check platform ingest and client support as well as your latency target; browsers, phones, and playback systems may not support every protocol or configuration.

SRS’s v5 low-latency guidance for RTMP/HTTP-FLV discusses server controls such as min_latency, disabling merged-read (publish.mr), and managing consumer queue waits. Its realtime example also changes GOP cache, queue, and merged-write behavior. These are version-sensitive server options, not a drop-in recipe for every SRS deployment; verify them against the documentation for the version you actually run and measure the encoder, network, and player path as well. SRS low-latency configuration guide
| Choice | What it can address | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Tuned HLS | SRS estimates about 6–8 seconds for the adjustments in its v8 guidance; it says the described setup will not go below five seconds. | Segment and playlist settings, player behavior, stability on variable networks, and YouTube’s HLS ingest requirements if sending to YouTube. |
| RTMP contribution to YouTube | SRS documents RTMP as a common publishing/ingestion choice. | This describes contribution/ingest, not the latency YouTube viewers will receive. |
| HTTP-FLV, HTTP-TS, or WebRTC | SRS identifies these as options for lower-latency delivery scenarios than HLS. | End-to-end delay, protocol support in the intended platform and clients, and behavior under network variation; no numeric outcome is guaranteed by the protocol choice alone. |
Troubleshoot latency and playback stability
- Delay remains close to the default behavior: Check whether the encoder GOP and encoder delay were changed, whether SRS is actually using the intended
hls_fragmentandhls_window, and whether the player is adding its own buffer. Confirm the running SRS version and effective configuration. - Playback stalls or skips after tuning: The segment, playlist, or player buffer may be too small for network jitter or bandwidth changes. Increase buffering cautiously and retest on the networks and devices your viewers use.
- The stream is stable but still above the target: The remaining delay may be in ingest, platform delivery, player strategy, or the viewer connection. Measure those parts separately where possible. If your goal is below five seconds, SRS’s documented HLS adjustments are not expected to reach it.
- YouTube does not offer Ultra low-latency: YouTube says this option is turned off when HLS is selected. That is a platform constraint, not a setting in SRS that restores the option.
- An SRS low-latency setting has no effect or breaks the stream: Check the exact SRS version: the cited minimum-latency guidance is for v5, while the HLS tuning guide is v8. Confirm option names and requirements against the documentation for your deployment before applying version-specific settings.
