Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →For a playlist or file you need to loop continuously, SRS has the clearer documented fit: its FFmpeg-based ingest can publish file input into SRS, and its Docker guide demonstrates an infinite-loop file command. MediaMTX is the more direct choice when a live stream is already available on a MediaMTX path and you need to route or forward it to YouTube over RTMP or RTMPS. These are differences in documented workflows, not benchmark results.
If your goal is simply to keep uploaded videos playing on YouTube without maintaining your own server, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative; it does not require SRS or MediaMTX.

What each server does in this workflow
The key question is not which server is universally better. It is where the playlist becomes a live stream, and which component sends that stream to YouTube.
- SRS: SRS v6 documents FFmpeg-based ingest for a file, stream, or device. FFmpeg reads the input and publishes to SRS over RTMP. The documentation identifies virtual live streaming from a VOD file as a use case and says file ingest adds FFmpeg’s real-time input option. Its input configuration supports one input. SRS v6 ingest documentation
- MediaMTX: MediaMTX describes itself as a live media server and proxy for routing media between protocols. Its YouTube guide documents forwarding a stream from a MediaMTX path to a YouTube RTMP/RTMPS destination. MediaMTX introduction · MediaMTX YouTube forwarding guide
For a playlist that is not already a live MediaMTX path, you will still need an upstream component—typically FFmpeg or SRS—to read and loop it. MediaMTX becomes useful downstream if its routing or protocol-conversion role is needed. Its documentation also points to running FFmpeg through runOnAvailable when transcoding, filtering, or an unsupported protocol is required; that adds complexity if you only need one looped source sent to one YouTube destination.

Which should you choose?
| Your starting point and goal | Better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A file or source that must be read and looped continuously, then published into a media server | SRS, with FFmpeg handling ingest | SRS documents FFmpeg-based file ingest, and its v8 Docker guide demonstrates looping a file indefinitely. |
| A stream already available on a MediaMTX path that needs forwarding to YouTube | MediaMTX | Its documentation gives a YouTube RTMP/RTMPS forwarding configuration. |
| A playlist input plus a need for MediaMTX routing or protocol conversion | FFmpeg or SRS upstream, MediaMTX downstream if useful | Separate playlist reading from stream routing; each component has a defined role. |
| One playlist, one YouTube destination, and no need to operate servers | StreamNeo, as a cloud alternative | It loops uploaded videos from the cloud and keeps the YouTube stream running without a computer left on. |
The cited documentation does not establish a universal winner for reliability, CPU use, latency, or scalability. Those depend on the playlist, codecs, configuration, host, network, and deployed software versions; validate the exact chain you intend to run.
Loop a file into SRS with FFmpeg
The SRS v8 Docker getting-started guide shows this command for continuously looping a single file and publishing it to SRS over RTMP:
ffmpeg -stream_loop -1 -re -i doc/source.flv
-c copy -f flv rtmp://host.docker.internal/live/livestream
SRS v8 Docker getting-started guide
- Choose the input. Replace
doc/source.flvwith the path to your media file as seen by the FFmpeg process. In Docker, make sure the file is available inside the container or mounted at the path you use. - Set the loop and pacing.
-stream_loop -1requests infinite looping.-rereads the input at its native rate rather than sending it as fast as possible. - Choose copy or encode.
-c copypasses through the existing audio and video streams without re-encoding. It avoids a transcode, but only works when the source streams and container are compatible with the output and YouTube workflow. If they are not, configure explicit video and audio encoders and suitable output settings rather than assuming stream copy will repair them. - Publish to the SRS ingest address. The sample uses
rtmp://host.docker.internal/live/livestream. Use the address and application/path appropriate to your SRS deployment; the example hostname is for the documented Docker setup, not a universal public ingest address. - Forward from SRS to YouTube. Configure a publishing path from your SRS instance to YouTube using the current stream URL and stream key shown in YouTube Studio. The SRS examples above establish file ingest into SRS; the exact outbound configuration depends on your deployed SRS version and setup.
The example is for one file, not a general playlist. For an HLS .m3u8 or another playlist, verify that the installed FFmpeg build can read the playlist and all referenced media, that segment transitions are compatible, and that looping behaves correctly at the end. Do not assume every playlist format, codec combination, or discontinuous segment sequence will loop cleanly. The SRS ingest reference cited here is for v6, while the loop example is from the v8 guide; confirm behavior and configuration against the version you deploy.

Forward a MediaMTX path to YouTube
Use MediaMTX’s forwarding workflow when the stream already exists as a MediaMTX path. Its guide shows how to configure a path to forward to YouTube and instructs you to copy the current Stream URL and stream key from YouTube’s live setup.
- Create or identify the source path. Make sure the playlist reader or upstream publisher is actually supplying a live stream to the MediaMTX path you plan to forward.
- Set the YouTube destination. Follow the current MediaMTX YouTube forwarding guide, using the Stream URL and stream key currently shown in YouTube Studio. Do not treat an endpoint in a documentation example as permanent; MediaMTX notes that its displayed endpoint reflected what was reported when that page was last checked.
- Confirm audio and video reach the path. MediaMTX warns that YouTube requires both; a video-only stream may be silently rejected.
- Test the complete route. Confirm the source reaches the path, the forwarder connects to YouTube, and YouTube receives playable audio and video before relying on the setup for a long run.
If the source cannot be routed as-is because it needs transcoding, filtering, or a protocol MediaMTX does not support for the job, the documentation points to FFmpeg through runOnAvailable. That is a separate process to configure and monitor, so avoid adding it unless your source actually needs that processing.
Playlist input is not YouTube HLS ingest
Reading an HLS .m3u8 source with FFmpeg is different from publishing to YouTube’s HLS ingest endpoint. YouTube’s HLS process expects an encoder to upload media playlists and segments through HTTPS using HTTP PUT or POST. Its published requirements include M2TS segments, H.264 or HEVC video, AAC audio, and a closed GOP. Segments are described as lasting one to four seconds, and frame rates up to 60 fps are supported. YouTube accepts Media Playlists; Master Playlists are ignored. The guide positions HLS ingest for premium quality or resolution where relatively higher latency is acceptable. YouTube HLS ingest guide

If your task is only to read a source playlist and send a live output to YouTube, do not assume that the source playlist itself satisfies YouTube’s HLS upload protocol. Use the documented RTMP/RTMPS forwarding workflow unless you specifically intend to implement YouTube’s HLS segment-upload method and meet its requirements.

Settings and checks that decide whether the stream works
- Input and codecs: Identify the playlist format and the actual audio/video codecs in its referenced media. A playlist that plays locally is not automatically suitable for stream copy to YouTube.
- Audio track: Ensure the outgoing stream contains audio as well as video. MediaMTX specifically warns that YouTube needs both.
- Loop boundary: Check for gaps, timestamp discontinuities, or incompatible segment transitions when a playlist restarts. The SRS example proves a single-file loop pattern, not all playlist behavior.
- Destination details: Copy the current YouTube Stream URL and stream key from YouTube Studio. Treat keys as credentials; do not publish or commit them in shared configuration.
- Protocol choice: Use the RTMP/RTMPS path appropriate to the documented configuration and current YouTube setup. Use YouTube HLS only if you need its separate segment-upload workflow.
- Version alignment: The relevant SRS references here are v6 for ingest behavior and v8 for the Docker loop example. Check the documentation for the version actually installed; do not transplant configuration assumptions across versions without validating them.
- Rights and channel eligibility: Use media you have permission to stream and check YouTube’s live-streaming and copyright rules for your channel and content. A technically healthy stream does not establish that the content is authorized or eligible for monetization.
Troubleshooting
FFmpeg cannot open the file or playlist
Check the path from the process’s point of view, file permissions, container mounts, playlist syntax, and whether every referenced segment or file is reachable. A relative path that works on the host may not exist inside a container.
The loop stops or breaks at the boundary
The documented SRS command loops one file. For a playlist, inspect FFmpeg’s input handling and logs, then test the end-to-start transition with the real media. Segment discontinuities or inconsistent codecs can prevent seamless looping.

The RTMP publish to SRS fails
Verify the SRS address, application/path, network reachability, and that the SRS process is accepting publishers on that endpoint. The Docker example’s host.docker.internal address is environment-specific; substitute the correct address for your network.
YouTube does not show a live picture
Check that the outgoing process is publishing to the current YouTube URL with the matching stream key, and inspect both the server and encoder logs. If forwarding through MediaMTX, confirm the source path is active and the forwarding configuration targets it.
YouTube rejects or silently ignores the stream
For MediaMTX’s documented YouTube workflow, verify that both audio and video are present. If you are using HLS ingest rather than RTMP/RTMPS, validate the separate segment, container, codec, playlist, and GOP requirements in YouTube’s HLS guide.

Video plays but audio is absent
Inspect the source and outgoing stream for an audio track and compatible audio encoding. YouTube’s documented MediaMTX forwarding guidance says a video-only stream is not sufficient.
The stream disconnects or does not recover
Check process supervision, server logs, network interruptions, and whether the playlist reader and forwarding process restart after failure. The cited SRS and MediaMTX feature pages do not prove a particular recovery guarantee for your deployment, so test reconnection behavior rather than assuming it.
