Choose Squoosh for hands-on still-image compression
Squoosh is a GoogleChromeLabs image-compression web app. Its interface lets you open an image, inspect the difference, adjust settings, and save a smaller file. That makes it a useful starting point when you want to tune the result rather than accept a single automatic setting. Open the Squoosh app.

Choose TinyPNG for a simple upload-and-process workflow
TinyPNG is a practical option when its listed formats match your needs and you are comfortable uploading the image. Its FAQ says uploaded files are accessible only to the user and retained for a maximum of 48 hours before deletion. The current interface advertises up to 20 files at 5 MB each, while its FAQ lists AVIF, JPEG XL (JXL), WebP, JPG, PNG, and APNG. Check the TinyPNG FAQ and home page for the current details.
For recurring or developer-led workflows, Tinify also advertises an API, Image CDN, WordPress and Figma plugins, and paid web plans on its home page. These are options to investigate if a one-off browser workflow is no longer enough; terms and pricing are not established here.

Choose ezgif for animation and GIF work
ezgif describes itself as a toolset primarily for making and editing animated GIFs. It also supports other image formats, animated WebP, APNG, AVIF, and basic video editing. Its About page says it uses ImageMagick for most image-editing work, gifsicle with lossygif for GIF tasks, and FFmpeg for video conversion and editing. See ezgif’s About page.
The GIF maker combines uploaded images into an animation and can edit existing animations. Its page lists many accepted image types, up to 2,000 files, and a 200 MB total upload limit. The page says files are automatically deleted one hour after last use; ezgif’s privacy policy likewise says uploaded files are stored for up to one hour after last use and then deleted.

Start with the requirements of the place where the image will be used: a website, app, or platform may accept some formats and reject others. Then compare the resulting image with the original at the size and quality you actually need. A smaller file is useful only if the visual result remains acceptable and the destination supports the format.

- Make a copy of the same source image for each test.
- Select an output format supported by your destination.
- Compress each copy, using settings that suit the intended use.
- Compare file size and inspect the images at their intended display size; check for visible artifacts or loss of detail.
- Use the version that meets both your quality needs and the destination’s compatibility requirements.
The official pages describe different workflows, but they do not establish a universal winner for quality, file size, or speed. TinyPNG’s home page makes a vendor claim that file size can be reduced by more than 85%; without comparative test conditions, that should not be treated as a result you can expect for every image or as a head-to-head advantage.
