Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. You pay processing fees on every payment you take. On Square’s US merchant services page, in-person card payments (tap, dip, or swipe) are listed at 2.6% + 15¢ per transaction. For most small shops, that per-sale fee is the cost that matters. The monthly software cost is usually the smaller number.
This review covers Square’s US pricing as shown on its official pages in early October 2026, how to estimate total cost from your own sales mix, when optional hardware makes sense, and where the platform’s trade-offs show up. How Square charges
Square has two separate cost layers. The first is the software plan, which is where Square’s Free plan comes in. The second is the processing fee charged on each payment, and it applies on every plan.

Square’s US retail pricing page states: “With Square Free, there are no monthly subscription costs — you only pay processing fees when you take a payment.” That sentence describes the plan structure. It does not mean payments are free.

The in-person rate
Square’s US merchant services page states: “You pay 2.6% + 15¢ for every tap, dip, or card swipe that happens in person.” This is the rate most brick-and-mortar sellers will see on a card-present sale.
The fixed 15¢ means the effective percentage is higher on small tickets and lower on large ones. The table below applies that published formula to several sale sizes. These figures are arithmetic from Square’s stated rate, not separate Square statistics.
| Sale amount | Fee (2.6% + 15¢) | Effective rate |
|---|---|---|
| $5.00 | $0.28 | 5.6% |
| $10.00 | $0.41 | 4.1% |
| $25.00 | $0.80 | 3.2% |
| $50.00 | $1.45 | 2.9% |
| $100.00 | $2.75 | 2.75% |
| $250.00 | $6.65 | 2.66% |
What the rate does not cover
This single rate applies to in-person card-present payments on Square’s US merchant services page. It is not a universal Square rate. Online payments, manually keyed payments, and some other channels are priced in separate rate tables on Square’s pages, and this article does not quote them. Before budgeting, check the rate table that matches how your customers actually pay.

Estimating your total monthly cost
A reliable estimate needs your own numbers. Use this sequence:
- Split your sales by payment channel. Pull the last three months and separate in-person card sales from online, invoiced, and manually entered payments.
- Count transactions and average ticket size. The fixed 15¢ per in-person sale adds up quickly for high-count, low-ticket businesses such as cafés.
- Apply the matching rate. For in-person sales, multiply total volume by 2.6% and add 15¢ per transaction.
- Add the software plan cost. On the Free plan, this is $0 per month according to Square’s retail pricing page. Paid plans and add-ons must be checked on the live pricing table for your location and feature needs.
- Add hardware costs, if any. Spread equipment purchases over the expected life of the device, or treat them as a one-time startup cost.
Worked example
Take a shop with $8,000 in in-person card sales per month, averaging $40 per transaction. That is 200 transactions.
- Percentage fee: $8,000 × 2.6% = $208.00
- Fixed fee: 200 × $0.15 = $30.00
- Processing total: $238.00 per month, or about 2.98% of volume
- Software on the Free plan: $0.00 per month, per Square’s retail pricing page
This example uses only the in-person rate. If half of the same shop’s sales were online, the online rate would be needed to complete the estimate.

Do you need Square hardware?
No. Square’s point-of-sale overview states that hardware is not required to take payments. Sellers can accept payments without a reader through invoicing, payment links, the virtual terminal, or Tap to Pay on iPhone or Android.
Recommended Free Tools
Hardware becomes useful when you take many card-present payments at a counter, need a dedicated checkout station, or want to avoid using your phone as the payment device.
Hardware-free options
- Invoicing and payment links for remote or prearranged sales.
- Virtual terminal for manually entered card payments. Check the separate rate for this channel before you rely on it.
- Tap to Pay on iPhone or Android for contactless card and mobile wallet payments on a phone you already own.
Dedicated devices
Block’s 2025 annual report, filed with the SEC, describes Square Register as an all-in-one combination of hardware, POS software, and payment technology. It describes Square Stand as allowing an iPad to act as a payment terminal or a full POS. Square also sells Square Reader for contactless and chip payments and Square Terminal for dedicated checkout. Model availability and compatibility change, so confirm the current product list on Square’s hardware pages before buying.
Rank #4

Square’s retail pricing page says sellers can ask about hardware discounts and onboarding or implementation support. Those discounts and support options are not described in detail, so treat them as things to request, not as guaranteed savings.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the POS covers
Square describes its POS as a combination of hardware and software for accepting payments, tracking sales, managing inventory, and related tasks. Sales and inventory management are part of the product scope. The specific features you get depend on the plan and product you choose, so compare feature lists against your operations rather than assuming every plan includes everything.
Before choosing, list the operational needs your business has: inventory tracking, staff permissions, customer records, and any accounting or other software you need to connect. Then confirm each one on the plan page you are considering.

Independent assessment
TechRadar’s 2026 coverage describes Square as a general-purpose point-of-sale system and discusses potential feature and scalability trade-offs. That is the publication’s assessment. It is not testing performed for this article, and we have not tested Square’s hardware or customer support.
Who Square fits, and who should look elsewhere
- Good fit: Small retailers and service businesses that take most payments in person, want a free starting plan, and can use a phone or tablet at the counter.
- Check carefully: Businesses with large card-not-present volume, since those payments are priced separately; businesses that need specific features not listed on the plan you are considering; and high-volume sellers, who can ask Square about custom pricing for volumes above $250,000 per year.
- Existing Square sellers: This article does not establish whether rates have changed for accounts already on Square. Check your account’s pricing terms and Square’s current retail pricing page.
All pricing in this article applies to Square’s US pages. Rates and plan terms in other countries are not covered.
The Bottom Line
For a US small business that takes most sales in person, Square’s Free plan keeps the software cost at zero, and the real expense is the processing fee: 2.6% + 15¢ per in-person card sale on Square’s US merchant services page. Run your own numbers by channel before deciding, and check the live rate table for any online or manually keyed sales you take.
