It is less compelling when you need highly bespoke design, a broad app ecosystem or a storefront independent of Square’s payments and operations. The practical choice depends on your plan, transaction volume, required features and existing tools—not on the monthly subscription alone.
What is Square Online?
Square Online—also called Square Websites in current Square help material—is a hosted website and ecommerce service inside Square’s broader commerce platform. You can publish product pages, accept online payments, offer shipping or pickup, and manage online activity alongside Square’s in-person sales, catalog and customer data.
It is one of three ways Square presents for selling online: build a Square website or use payment links, connect a third-party ecommerce platform, or create a custom experience with Square developer tools. That makes Square Online a useful operating option, not a mandatory route for every Square seller.
How much does Square Online cost in 2026?
Square’s current US plans page groups online-store features into Square Free, Plus and Premium. The figures below are the published US rates available on September 30, 2026; Square says existing accounts can have different terms, so check the pricing shown in your Square Dashboard before subscribing.
#1 Best Overall
- With Square Terminal, you can ring up sales, accept payments, and print receipts, all with one device. Use it at the counter or ring up customers anywhere in your store.
- Accept all major credit and debit cards and pay one low rate with no hidden fees and no long-term contracts.
- Process chip cards in just two seconds.
- Get your money as soon as the next business day.
- Use it cordlessly with the built-in battery, designed to last all day.
| Plan | Subscription | Online card processing | What the price means |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 per month per location | 3.3% + 30¢ per online transaction | No recurring plan charge, but per-transaction fees still apply. |
| Plus | $49 per month per location | 2.9% + 30¢ per online transaction | A recurring location charge with lower published online card rate than Free. |
| Premium | $149 per month per location | 2.9% + 30¢ per online transaction | Highest recurring charge and the same published online card rate as Plus. |
These are not complete ownership costs. Your comparison should include the subscription per location, payment fees, average order value, monthly order count, taxes, domain costs if applicable, and the value of any feature restricted to a higher tier. A $49 or $149 plan can be economical for one seller and poor value for another because payment fees scale with every order.
Square’s 2025 unified-plan announcement described the same US monthly prices and said new sellers could access the plans, while most existing US sellers could adopt them through Dashboard. Packaging and eligibility can change, so the live plans page and your account terms take priority.
What features are included?
Square lists website design and SEO tools, custom-domain support, catalog management, checkout, payment types, fulfillment, marketing and ecommerce reporting. The exact feature gate matters: Square’s comparison includes higher-tier rows for enhanced customization, customer accounts, multiple websites, abandoned-cart emails, real-time shipping rates, product reviews, product bundles and subscriptions, plus additional catalog controls.
Rank #2
- A complete countertop point of sale — Combine dual responsive touchscreens, built-in POS software, and durable hardware for a fast, reliable checkout experience.
- Serve customers faster — Run smoothly through busy shifts, complex menus, and big orders with high-speed processing, memory, and responsive touchscreen displays.
- Accept every way they pay — Take all major cards at one simple rate, with no hidden fees or long-term contracts. Receive funds as soon as the next business day.
- Handle real-world demands — Resist everyday spills, dust, and wear with a durable, IP54-rated design.
- Stay reliable through every rush — Maintain strong connectivity and consistent performance through your busiest hours.
Square’s comparison view does not establish every row’s plan assignment clearly enough to reproduce a reliable tier-by-tier feature chart here. Confirm each required feature on the current US plans page before choosing a plan, especially if you need subscriptions, reviews, abandoned-cart recovery or carrier-rate calculations.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

You can use Square’s catalog and categories for online products and configure checkout within the same merchant account. This is particularly useful when online and in-person stock should remain synchronized instead of being maintained in separate systems.
Fulfillment
The setup guidance supports shipping, pickup, local delivery, QR-code ordering and nonphysical items where the product and configuration allow them. Tax settings can apply online tax rules and account for pickup, delivery and QR orders, but they do not remove your responsibility to determine which taxes your business owes.
Rank #3
- With Square Handheld, you can accept payments, take tableside orders, or scan barcodes anywhere. With a slim design and comfortable grip, the POS is easy to carry in your palm or pocket. Square Handheld is designed to withstand water splashes and dust. Add an optional protective case for accidental drops. A long-lasting battery and offline payments let you keep selling.
- Slim, pocketable, and lightweight so you can accept payments wherever your customers are.
- Take tableside orders, bust lines, or use the built-in barcode scanner, all with one sleek device.
- A battery that can power through your shift and offline payments let you keep selling, even if your internet is down.
- Accept all major credit and debit cards and pay one simple rate with no hidden fees and no long-term contracts required.
Design, domain and SEO
Square provides templates, page editing, a custom-domain option and SEO controls. Square advises designing in mobile view first. Existing Weebly-builder users should follow Square’s transition guidance if they want the newest Square website features.
Marketing and reporting
Marketing tools and ecommerce reporting are part of the Square plan comparison. Higher tiers may add tools such as abandoned-cart emails or expanded catalog controls; verify availability for your account rather than assuming every plan includes them.
How do you set up a Square Online store?
Square’s recommended workflow is deliberately operational: configure what you sell and how orders are fulfilled before polishing the design.
Rank #4
- Use the, easy-to-use, and customizable POS to get started.
- Accept contactless payments, chip cards, Apple Pay, and Google Pay from anywhere, with improved connectivity, extended battery life, and enhanced security. Pay one low rate for every tap or dip.
- No long-term commitments or contracts, no monthly fees- and with offline payments, keep taking payments for up to 24 hours.
- Safely and securely accepts payments anywhere. Plus, get data security, 24/7 fraud prevention, and payment-dispute management at no extra cost.
- Use the, easy-to-use, and customizable POS to get started.
- Create the catalog. Add items, prices, images, variants and categories in Square Dashboard.
- Choose fulfillment. Enable the methods that fit each product—shipping, pickup, delivery, QR ordering or nonphysical delivery.
- Configure taxes. Set online tax behavior and review the different treatment required for pickup, delivery and QR orders.
- Design the site. Select a template, build pages and check the mobile view first.
- Enable optional features. Review plan-gated tools such as reviews, subscriptions, bundles, customer accounts and abandoned-cart email.
- Set checkout and domain. Configure payment and checkout preferences, then use Square’s free-domain option or connect a domain you own.
- Preview and publish. Test a representative order, fulfillment method and tax result before making the site public.
Why existing Square sellers may prefer it
- One operating system: online and in-person sales, catalog, inventory and customer information can be managed through Square.
- Common fulfillment choices: pickup, delivery and shipping can be configured alongside checkout.
- Lower setup complexity: a seller already using Square does not need to introduce a second core payment and catalog system.
- Payment links as a lighter option: a full website is not required for every campaign or product.
Where Square Online is limiting
- Feature gates: the tools you need may require Plus or Premium, so the Free plan is not automatically sufficient.
- Design depth: templates and controls may not satisfy a brand that needs extensive bespoke layouts or behavior.
- Platform dependence: choosing Square keeps payments and core commerce operations closely tied to Square’s ecosystem.
- Plan economics: recurring location fees and per-order charges can outweigh the convenience at higher volume or with multiple locations.
- Integration verification: an app listing alone does not prove compatibility with your geography, plan, catalog or fulfillment workflow.
Square Online versus alternatives
Choose by operating model rather than by the website editor alone.
| Route | Best fit | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Square website | A retailer wanting Square website, POS, catalog and fulfillment together. | Less flexibility than a deeply customized platform may provide; feature access depends on plan. |
| Square payment links | A seller who needs quick checkout links without building a full storefront. | Not a substitute for a complete navigable catalog and content-rich website. |
| Third-party ecommerce platform connected to Square | A business already committed to another storefront or specialized workflow. | Requires synchronization, compatibility checks, possible extra fees and ongoing support. |
| Custom Square developer build | A business needing a tailored customer journey or integrations. | Higher implementation and maintenance effort than a hosted site. |
Square’s marketplace lists ecommerce-related options such as Wix, WooCommerce, Shippo, Ecwid and SKU IQ, covering storefronts, shipping and inventory synchronization. Listings and pricing change, so verify current compatibility, geography, plan requirements and vendor support before committing.
When Shopify or another storefront makes more sense
If your business already sells through another platform, keeping that storefront and connecting Square may avoid a disruptive migration. Square specifically describes Shopify with Thrive Inventory as an option for merchants who want to keep Shopify while using Square in their operations. Treat that as an integration path to investigate, not a guarantee that every feature will synchronize perfectly.

What do Square’s growth claims prove?
Square reports that sellers saw a 38% average revenue increase within six months in a comparison of the six months before and after their first website transaction in 2024. That is vendor-reported observational evidence; it does not prove that adding a website caused the increase.
Square also reported 9% higher sales among cohorts adopting one or more Square software products than comparable non-adopters in an internal 2024 analysis. That figure concerns Square software adoption generally, not Square Online specifically. Square’s market guide relays a US Department of Commerce figure of 16.4% of total US sales online and estimated 2025 US ecommerce sales of $1.2337 trillion, up 5.4% from 2024; the underlying government release and definitions should be checked before using those figures for forecasting.
Is Square Online worth it?
Yes, for a Square-centered business that values operational simplicity and needs a conventional online store. Start with Free if the recurring charge matters and its features are sufficient; compare Plus or Premium only after identifying the gated tools you actually need and modeling your order volume and locations.
Choose another route when your priority is extensive design control, a specialized ecommerce ecosystem, or independence from Square’s platform. In that case, keep Square for payments or point-of-sale only if the integration reliably supports your catalog, inventory, customers and fulfillment.
