The strongest product ideas for online businesses start with a specific customer problem—not a list of supposedly hot products. If you are asking “what should I sell?”, treat each answer as a hypothesis: identify who needs it, check what they do now and what they pay for alternatives, then test demand before committing heavily to inventory, software or marketing.
Start with a problem and a buyer
Build an initial shortlist from problems people repeatedly encounter, underserved groups, niche interests, your work experience and skills. Your interests can point toward ideas, but enthusiasm alone does not show that customers will buy. The U.S. Small Business Administration recommends brainstorming around interests and problems, then checking whether a profitable need exists and identifying the target market (SBA market research and competitive analysis; SBA guidance on identifying a business idea).
For each candidate, write down the buyer and the situation: who experiences the problem, when it occurs, and what they do about it now. “A product for pet owners” is too broad to guide a business. A defined group with a recognizable need gives you something concrete to investigate. U.S. Census Bureau data and tools can help characterize a market and target customer (Powerful Data for Your Small Business).
Check whether the need has evidence behind it
Look for signals that customers are actively trying to solve the problem. Use more than one source: conversations with potential buyers, search wording, marketplace listings, competitor reviews and discussion in relevant social communities. Shopify’s product-selection guidance highlights customer needs, demographics and competitor reviews; its ecommerce research guide also covers ways to find and assess product opportunities (Shopify Help Center: Choosing products to sell; Shopify: How To Find a Product to Sell Online: 17 Proven Methods).

Pay attention to recurring complaints and unmet needs, not just a burst of attention around a viral item. A niche can make a need easier to define and an offer more relevant, but a narrowly defined audience is not automatically large enough or willing to pay. Check whether the people describing the problem resemble the customers you could actually reach.
Map competitors and alternatives
List direct competitors—businesses offering a similar solution—and indirect alternatives, including what customers do themselves or buy instead. Compare the offers by product or service and by customer segment. Note the price, what is included, how the offer is delivered, and what reviews say is missing, inconvenient or disappointing. The SBA recommends assessing competitors in relation to their offerings and the market segments they serve (SBA market research and competitive analysis).

A useful opportunity is not merely “there are no competitors.” Few visible alternatives could mean an overlooked need—or weak demand. A more grounded hypothesis identifies a specific gap, such as an underserved buyer or an inconvenient part of an existing solution, and gives customers a concrete reason to choose your offer.
Compare your shortlist before choosing
Use these questions to compare ideas. They are a decision framework, not equally weighted scores or a guarantee of success.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches| Factor | Question to investigate |
|---|---|
| Customer need | Is the problem specific, frequent or costly enough that people seek a solution? |
| Reachable audience | Can you identify and reach this segment in your geography and through channels available to you? |
| Alternatives | What are customers already buying or doing, and what remains poorly served? |
| Willingness to pay | What do alternatives cost, and would target customers pay enough to support delivery and customer acquisition? |
| Differentiation | What concrete reason would make a buyer choose your offer beyond its being new? |
| Feasibility | Can you supply it, fulfill orders or deliver the service, and meet applicable obligations? |
| Testability | Can you test the riskiest assumption before substantial spending on inventory, development or promotion? |
Also estimate the audience you can reach, likely price, product or delivery costs, and resources needed to attract and serve customers. The SBA’s market research framework includes market size, economic indicators, saturation and prices of alternatives. A large market alone does not make an idea viable, and a promising need still has to work with your costs and ability to reach buyers.
Test the riskiest assumption cheaply
Before investing heavily, decide what you most need to learn. Is the uncertain point whether buyers recognize the problem, whether the proposed solution appeals to them, or whether they will pay the price required to deliver it? Choose a small test that can produce evidence on that question. Shopify describes customer feedback and low-risk options such as a waitlist, a preorder with clear delivery expectations, or a small paid landing-page experiment (Shopify: Find Your Product-Market Fit and Choose What Sells).
Rank #4
- Customer conversations or surveys: Ask people in the intended audience about the problem and what they currently do. Feedback can help refine the offer, but stated interest is not the same as a purchase.
- Prototype: Show a simple version of the product or service and learn whether the proposed solution addresses the need.
- Waitlist or landing page: Describe the offer clearly and observe whether likely buyers take the next step. Clicks alone do not establish profitable demand.
- Preorder: If you accept payment before fulfillment, state the terms and expected shipping date clearly. Treat the result as evidence to evaluate, not a guarantee of future sales.
Use the results to choose a next step
Look at what people actually do as well as what they say: signups, willingness to pay, orders and specific feedback. There is no universal success threshold established for these tests, so interpret results in light of the audience, offer, price and costs you are evaluating. If the response challenges your assumptions, revise the target customer, offer or positioning and test the changed idea rather than scaling on hope.
For a candidate that earns stronger evidence, make the next commitment proportionate to what you have learned. Continue checking demand, competition and alternative prices as conditions change, and investigate requirements that apply to your particular product, service and location. The available guidance is general and U.S.-oriented; it does not establish a universally best product category or a guaranteed profit formula.
