Star Citizen is the currently accessible game: a persistent-universe experience that RSI describes as a live service, though it remains in alpha. Squadron 42 is a separate single-player campaign in the same universe, but it is still in development and is not available to download. That availability difference is the most important one for players deciding what they can play now.

Can you play Squadron 42 now?
No. RSI’s support page, updated February 4, 2026, says Squadron 42 is still in development and cannot yet be downloaded. RSI says download access will follow completion of development, testing, and release, for accounts whose pledge includes the game. A purchase or pledge should not be treated as access to a playable campaign today.
Is Star Citizen finished because it is live?
No. “Live” refers to access to the current service, not a finished release. RSI’s Public Test Universe FAQ, updated October 5, 2026, says Star Citizen remains in alpha and that features in both Star Citizen and Squadron 42 are still in design, development, and testing. RSI distinguishes the live service from the PTU, which is a controlled environment for testing unreleased patches.

What can you expect from the story and gameplay?
Star Citizen: an ongoing universe to inhabit
RSI presents Star Citizen as a persistent universe, with combat, alien moons, characters, and the possibility of building a life in space. Those descriptions convey its broad setting and orientation, but they are not a promise that every feature is complete or stable: RSI says the game is in alpha and that features remain in development.
Squadron 42: a single-player campaign, not a currently playable mode
RSI identifies Squadron 42 as a single-player campaign. The official pages cited here do not provide enough detail to reliably compare its plot, missions, campaign length, or specific gameplay systems with Star Citizen. The safe distinction is about format and availability: it is a separate campaign, and it is not currently downloadable.

Do you need a package to access Star Citizen?
RSI says Star Citizen requires a game package and a computer that meets its listed requirements. Its April 2026 checklist says game packages, except the standalone Squadron 42 pledge, include at least one ship, the game, and additional items. Package contents vary, so check the individual pledge listing rather than assuming every package includes Squadron 42. RSI’s Pledges FAQ, updated April 14, 2026, describes pledges as contributions supporting development and lists what each includes.
