What is Squadron 42?
RSI describes Squadron 42 as its single-player campaign. It is intended to deliver a focused story experience rather than the persistent live environment associated with Star Citizen. However, the campaign is not currently available to play: RSI’s support page, updated February 4, 2026, says it remains in development and is not available for download. RSI says holders of a pledge that includes Squadron 42 will be able to download it after development is complete, the game has been tested, and it has been released. The page gives no release date. Star Citizen is the live, persistent-universe experience. RSI’s getting-started checklist, updated April 16, 2026, says access requires an RSI account and a Game Package. Are they set in the same universe, and do they connect?
RSI’s February 9, 2016 package-split explanation presented Squadron 42 and Star Citizen as related modules in the same universe. It also described functional connections between them. That page is useful for understanding the original relationship, but it does not establish which connections will be present at release or what current pledge packages include. That 2016 explanation said buyers could choose the campaign, the persistent universe, or both. Treat that as a description of the package split at the time, not a guarantee of current store contents. What has RSI said the campaign aims to deliver?
In a 2019 letter, Chris Roberts described ambitions for a story-led space adventure, including relationships, battles, and cinematic set pieces. These are developer statements about intent, not evidence that the final campaign has shipped with every described feature. Roberts called the goal “the pinnacle of the single-player story space adventure”; that is the developer’s stated ambition, not an independent assessment of a finished game. What should a prospective player check?
- Availability: Check RSI’s Squadron 42 download support page for a new release or download-status update; the February 4, 2026 page says the campaign is not available.
- Package contents: Read the current pledge or package description and confirm explicitly whether it includes Squadron 42. The 2016 package explanation is not a current offer.
