SQL Database Choices: Match Local Storage or Server Needs

Choose a database by checking what your app supports first, then decide whether you need local storage or a shared server. Here’s how SQLite, PostgreSQL, MySQL, MariaDB, SQL Server, and Docker fit.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If your application requires a particular database, install a supported version of that first. Otherwise, decide whether the data belongs on one device or must be shared by clients over a network: SQLite is built for local, embedded storage, while PostgreSQL, MySQL, MariaDB, and SQL Server are client/server options. For a general-purpose self-managed server without a compatibility constraint, PostgreSQL is a reasonable starting point—not a universal winner. Your app, operating system, workload, and operational needs should settle the choice.

Which database should I use for my app?

Start with the application’s supported databases and versions. Compatibility can outweigh general preferences: an app that requires SQL Server, for example, is not made compatible by choosing a different engine. If the application gives you a choice, use the data-sharing pattern to narrow the field.

Situation Good starting point What to check
One application or device needs a local database file; education, demos, or embedded storage SQLite Whether you need multiple simultaneous writers or network clients
A self-managed server database for a new application, with no vendor requirement PostgreSQL Application and driver support, platform packages, and operational capacity
Your application, infrastructure, or team already targets MySQL MySQL Supported platform, release track, and version-specific setup
Your application supports MariaDB or your existing environment uses it MariaDB Exact application, connector, and version compatibility
Your application or organization depends on Microsoft SQL Server tools or features SQL Server Edition, licensing, and capacity limits
You need a repeatable local development environment A server engine in Docker Persistent storage, credentials, ports, and backups

This is a fit guide, not a speed ranking. Without a defined workload and testing, claims that one of these engines is universally faster or best are not useful.

Is SQLite enough for my project?

SQLite stores a database in a local file and is designed for use inside applications and devices. Its maintainers describe suitable uses including embedded devices, application file formats, data analysis, education, and training. It can also be a practical choice for a small application that needs local storage without a separately administered database server. SQLite’s guidance on appropriate uses explains where that design fits.

SQLite supports multiple readers, but only one writer can write to a database file at a time. That may be entirely adequate when writes are occasional and coordinated. Reconsider it when many clients need to write concurrently or the application and database are separated by a network. SQLite’s documentation puts it plainly: “If many client programs sending SQL to the same database over a network, then use a client/server database engine instead of SQLite.”

SQLite’s theoretical maximum file size is 281 terabytes, but that is not a practical target or a reason to use it for a large shared service. The maintainers advise considering a client/server database as data approaches terabyte scale. Choose based on access patterns and operational needs, not the theoretical maximum.

When should I choose PostgreSQL, MySQL, MariaDB, or SQL Server?

PostgreSQL: a flexible general-purpose server option

When there is no application or organizational constraint, PostgreSQL is a defensible place to start for a self-managed client/server database. Its project describes capabilities including data integrity, extensibility, replication, point-in-time recovery, and authentication and access-control options. The PostgreSQL Global Development Group reported support for 170 of 177 mandatory SQL:2023 Core features as of PostgreSQL 18’s September 2025 release; this is not full SQL:2023 conformance, and the project notes that no relational database meets full conformance. See the PostgreSQL About page for the project’s description and qualification.

MySQL: follow the application or team standard

MySQL often makes sense when an application already targets it or the team has infrastructure and experience built around it. Installation depends on operating-system support, distribution, and release track. Oracle’s manual distinguishes LTS and Innovation tracks and directs installers to verify platform support, complete post-installation setup, and secure the initial root account. Follow the instructions for the exact platform and release you plan to install in the MySQL installation manual.

MariaDB: validate compatibility for the exact app and version

MariaDB’s Developer Hub describes its server as compatible with MySQL and lists features such as common table expressions, window functions, JSON functions, temporal tables, and pluggable storage engines. That vendor description does not guarantee that every application, connector, or version behaves identically. Check the application’s supported database list and test the exact combination before adopting MariaDB as a replacement. Details are on the MariaDB Developer Hub.

SQL Server: choose it when the Microsoft ecosystem matters

SQL Server is the natural choice when the application or organization depends on its tools, features, or surrounding Microsoft ecosystem. Microsoft describes Express as a free, entry-level edition for learning and small applications, and Express LocalDB as a lightweight user-mode option. SQL Server 2025 Express has documented limits of four cores, 1,410 MB of buffer-pool memory, and a 50 GB maximum relational database size per instance. These are edition capacity limits, not performance measurements; verify the applicable terms and limits for your planned deployment in Microsoft’s SQL Server 2025 editions documentation. Developer editions are for development and testing, not production.

Which SQL database is easiest to install?

That depends on what you mean by “easy.” SQLite’s setup can be as simple as copying an executable and running it, because it does not require a separate database server process. A client/server engine involves choosing a supported platform and release, installing and configuring the service, and handling accounts, storage, and backups. PostgreSQL provides official packages and installers for Linux, macOS, Windows, BSD, and Solaris. MySQL’s steps vary by platform and distribution, and its manual includes post-install account security.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For production, install a stable release rather than a preview build. PostgreSQL labels beta, release-candidate, and development snapshots for testing and evaluation, not production. Its downloads page offers platform-specific packages and installers; use the instructions for your operating system and the release you intend to run.

Can I run a database in Docker?

Yes. Docker documents CLI, GUI, and Compose workflows and provides Official Images for MySQL and PostgreSQL. A container is a packaging and deployment option, not a substitute for choosing an engine or planning how data is stored.

Persist database files in a mounted volume. Removing a container without a volume can remove its data as well. Also plan how credentials are supplied, which ports are exposed, and how backups are made; an illustrative password in a sample command is not a safe real secret. See Docker’s database guide for its container and volume workflows.

What to check before installing

  1. Confirm application support. Check the app’s documented database engines, versions, and drivers; do not assume compatibility from a similar product name.
  2. Choose local or shared access. Local, embedded storage points toward SQLite. Network clients and simultaneous writes usually call for a client/server engine.
  3. Verify platform and release support. Check the selected engine’s official instructions for your operating system, distribution, and version. Prefer stable releases for production.
  4. Review edition and licensing boundaries. Confirm that the edition permits your intended use and has enough capacity; in particular, Developer editions of SQL Server are not for production.
  5. Plan operations before loading important data. Set secure credentials, establish persistent storage, and decide how backups will be created and restored. For Docker, use a volume rather than relying on a container’s writable layer.
