Commercial satellites publish useful specifications for imaging the Earth, including sensor types, resolution and revisit opportunities. Current spy-satellite performance is not documented in the same way by the public sources available here, so a precise head-to-head comparison—or a reliable claim about what size object a spy satellite can identify—is not established. The clearest comparison is between documented commercial systems and the limits of what can responsibly be said about intelligence satellites.
What can be compared—and what cannot
“Spy satellite” does not describe one sensor or one standard capability. Earth-observation systems may use optical sensors or synthetic aperture radar (SAR), among other approaches. Commercial providers and public agencies list specifications for particular products and modes; the official sources cited here do not provide a comparable current technical inventory for intelligence satellites.

That disclosure gap matters. The U.S. Geological Survey’s commercial imagery table and NASA’s Airbus data page document commercial systems, not classified ones. The USGS Earth Observing Satellites Online Compendium describes a civil Earth-observation resource; it does not fill in the missing intelligence specifications. These sources do not establish a current spy-satellite ground resolution, revisit pattern, spectral capability, orbit or object-identification threshold.

How commercial systems differ
Optical and radar imagery answer different questions. Sensor type, spectral bands and operating mode affect what an image records and how analysts interpret it. Resolution alone is not a complete measure of capability, and panchromatic, multispectral and SAR figures should not be treated as interchangeable.
Optical systems: detail, bands and visibility
Optical systems record reflected energy. A panchromatic product is a single broad image band, while multispectral products record multiple bands; some systems also offer shortwave infrared (SWIR). Those products have different listed resolutions, so comparing their numbers directly can mislead. Optical collection also depends on suitable illumination and visibility; clouds can prevent a useful view of the ground.

USGS lists Maxar WorldView 1/2/3 with panchromatic (PAN), multispectral (MSI) and SWIR products. Its table gives best-resolution figures of 0.31 m PAN, 1.24 m MSI and 3.7 m SWIR. USGS lists Planet SkySat at 0.50 m best resolution for PAN/MSI imagery, and Planet Doves at 3 m for multispectral imagery; Doves are described as always collecting rather than taskable through the same route. These are product-specific values from the USGS table, not a direct measure of reliable object identification.

NASA’s CSDA Airbus page lists Pléiades Neo at 0.3 m panchromatic and 1.2 m multispectral resolution, with six multispectral bands. It lists the earlier Pléiades generation at 0.5 m panchromatic and 2 m multispectral, and SPOT at 1.5 m panchromatic and 6 m multispectral.

SAR: collection through cloud and darkness
SAR uses radar rather than reflected sunlight, so it can collect through cloud and at night. Its images have trade-offs: USGS describes SAR imagery as grayscale and notes speckle noise. It also notes that SAR resolution can be lower than electro-optical resolution, depending on radar frequency and system configuration. A nominal resolution number by itself therefore does not tell a reader how readily a scene can be interpreted.
In the USGS table, Capella and Umbra are listed as SAR systems with 0.25 m best resolution; ICEYE (US) is listed at 0.5 m. The table marks tasking as available for these examples. The figures are the listed best resolutions, not evidence that every collection mode, scene or delivered image achieves the same result.

Commercial figures and access descriptions in this table come from the USGS table and the NASA CSDA Airbus page. The sources report product and constellation specifications; they do not guarantee that a given location will be imaged at a requested instant or that a particular scene will be usable.

A resolution figure is a sensor or product specification, not a promise that an analyst—or an automated system—can identify every object of a particular size. What a scene supports depends on the sensor and mode, the image itself and the question being asked. The listed panchromatic, multispectral, SWIR and SAR values are especially unsuitable for a simple “smallest object visible” ranking because they refer to different kinds of data.

The public commercial specifications give concrete numbers; the cited official sources do not provide an equivalent current number for spy satellites. They consequently cannot support a claim that a spy satellite resolves a specific number of centimetres on the ground, or that it can identify a particular vehicle, person or object under defined conditions.
Revisit is an opportunity, not a delivery guarantee
Revisit describes how often a constellation may have an opportunity to collect over an area. NASA’s Airbus page reports daily global revisit for Pléiades Neo and Pléiades and one-to-three-day revisit for SPOT; it also describes one-to-two-times-daily revisit for Airbus optical constellations. Those are constellation-level descriptions, not promises of cloud-free imagery, successful collection at a precise requested moment, or immediate delivery.
Tasking and access routes differ. USGS lists some systems as taskable and describes Planet Doves as always collecting rather than taskable through the same route. NASA’s Airbus information sits within its Commercial Smallsat Data Acquisition program. These institutional pathways show data access in particular professional or research contexts; they do not, on their own, establish a consumer retail route, public pricing or complete licensing terms. Anyone evaluating imagery for mapping, research, monitoring or operations should check the provider’s current coverage, tasking, licensing, delivery and cost for the intended use.
Which type is useful for a given question?
- Choose optical imagery when the relevant information is visible in reflected light and the scene has adequate illumination and visibility. Check whether the product is panchromatic, multispectral or SWIR before comparing resolution figures.
- Consider SAR when cloud cover or darkness makes optical collection unsuitable, while accounting for grayscale presentation and speckle when interpreting the result.
- Check revisit and tasking separately from resolution. A constellation’s nominal revisit does not guarantee a successful collection at the required time or prompt delivery.
- Do not infer spy-satellite performance from commercial listings. Public vendor specifications offer a useful view of commercial products, but these cited sources do not establish an equivalent intelligence-system specification.
The defensible comparison is therefore asymmetric: commercial Earth-imaging systems have published, product-specific specifications and access descriptions, while the current technical performance of spy satellites remains unresolved in these public sources. There is no evidence here for a precise winner or a universal object-identification threshold.
