The quickest useful way to learn Spring Boot is to build a small web application, run it, then change one thing at a time. Start with Spring’s official Building an Application with Spring Boot guide. It walks through project creation and a simple web app, with starter and completed projects available for comparison. After that, use Spring Initializr to generate a project you can inspect and extend.
Start with a working Spring Boot web app
The official Spring guide gives beginners a concrete first result: a simple web application. Its page currently lists Java 17 or later and either Gradle 7.5+ or Maven 3.5+ as requirements, and estimates about 15 minutes to complete. These are the guide’s stated requirements and estimate; check the live page because they may change.

Choose the route that matches what you want to practice:
| Starting route | Best fit | What you practice |
|---|---|---|
| Work through the guide from the beginning | You are new to Java build tools or want to understand project setup. | Choosing a build system, generating the project, and following each application step. |
| Use the guide’s preconfigured sample | You already understand the setup and want to focus on the application. | Running and examining a working example, then comparing it with the completed project. |
The guide links both initial and complete sample projects, so you can check your work without treating every setup step as mandatory. Follow the full path if project generation is part of what you need to learn.

Generate a project, then inspect what it created
Spring Initializr generates JVM projects with configurable choices such as build system, language, packaging, coordinates, platform version, and dependencies. The guide’s path is to choose a build system and language, select Spring Web, generate and download the ZIP, and open the project.
- Generate a project with Spring Web selected, using the build system and language you want to learn.
- Open the extracted project in your editor or IDE.
- Inspect the source tree and locate the controller used by the web application.
- Open the build file and find the dependency selection for Spring Web.
- Run the application using the guide’s instructions, then confirm the result in a browser or other suitable client.
Do not treat generation as the lesson’s finish line. Seeing the relationship between the selected dependency, the generated files, and the running app gives you a project you can reason about and modify.

Change one behavior and verify it
Once the original application runs, make a small edit to its controller response or add a simple endpoint. Restart or rerun the app using the same method you used to launch it, then request the affected route and check that the output changed as expected.

- Keep the original sample or guide open for comparison if you are unsure what a file does.
- If the application no longer starts, undo the last edit and run it again. This narrows the problem to the change you just made.
This small experiment is a useful bridge from copying a tutorial to understanding the code: predict what your edit should do, run it, and compare the actual result with that prediction.

Choose the next project by the feature you want to learn
After the first app, add one concern at a time rather than combining several new concepts in one project. The Spring Guides catalog offers task-focused examples across these areas:
- REST: build an API-oriented application.
- Data access: connect an application to data storage.
- Testing: practice checking application behavior.
- Security: add a security-focused exercise.
- Messaging: explore communication through messages.
- Deployment: learn how an application is prepared to run beyond the initial local exercise.
Pick the subject that answers your next question, complete its small project, and then modify one part of it. This keeps the learning sequence practical and makes it easier to identify which new feature introduced a problem.
Rank #4
Use the reference documentation when a project raises a question
The Spring Boot documentation overview organizes material around first steps and tutorials, running an example, build systems, code structure and configuration, running code in an IDE or with Maven or Gradle, and packaging. Use it as a lookup map when you encounter a specific question; a beginner does not need to read the reference cover to cover before building an app.
