Recommended Free Tools
Spotify did not launch a separate “Weekly Discovery” playlist. On June 30, 2025, it added genre controls to the existing Discover Weekly. Eligible listeners—initially Premium users—can choose up to five genre options that Spotify derives from their listening history, then receive a fresh 30-track recommendation list influenced by those choices.
What Spotify actually introduced
Discover Weekly remains Spotify’s personalized playlist that refreshes every Monday. The new feature is a customization layer: instead of leaving every recommendation signal to your listening history, you can select genres Spotify presents at the top of Discover Weekly.

Spotify announced the controls as part of Discover Weekly’s 10th anniversary on June 30, 2025. The company says the selected genres influence a new 30-track playlist, while its personalization system continues to use your listening behavior. Spotify was still describing the controls as a Premium feature in its January 28, 2026 guidance.
That means this is an upgrade to Discover Weekly, not a new product called “Weekly Discovery.” That name is used by the separate Rewind Music Time Travel app for browsing albums from the same week in past years, not for Spotify’s recommendation feature (Rewind on the App Store).

How to use Discover Weekly’s genre controls
- Open Spotify and go to Home.
- Open the Made For You hub, or search for Discover Weekly. Spotify’s support documentation lists both routes for finding personalized playlists (Spotify Support: Find playlists).
- Open Discover Weekly and look at the top of the playlist for the genre controls.
- Choose from the genre options Spotify displays. You can select up to five.
- Use the resulting 30-track playlist as your week’s discovery queue. Save tracks or artists you want to keep, because Discover Weekly refreshes again on Monday.
The labels and layout can vary by platform, account and rollout. Spotify has not published a universal app-version requirement or a complete country-by-country availability list, so the controls may not appear in every account at the same time.
“Up to five” does not mean any five genres
Spotify says the available choices are personalized from your streaming history. You may see fewer than five options, or a different set from another listener. You also cannot assume that every genre in Spotify’s catalog will be available as a control.
Who can use the feature?
Spotify’s launch announcement explicitly identified Premium users as the initial audience and said broader availability was planned. The company’s January 2026 article still described the controls as a Premium feature. The cited public guidance does not confirm a complete worldwide rollout to Free accounts.

If you are on Free, the controls may not be available even though Discover Weekly itself is visible. Availability can also differ by market or account. Do not treat the absence of the controls as proof that you are looking in the wrong place.
Discover Weekly compared with Spotify’s other discovery tools
| Spotify feature | What it does | Timing or format |
|---|---|---|
| Discover Weekly with genre controls | Finds songs Spotify thinks you may like, with up to five personalized genre inputs | 30 tracks; refreshes Monday |
| Spotify Mixes | Personalized playlists built around artists, genres or decades | Ongoing mixes; a Monday replacement cycle is not specified |
| Release Radar | Highlights new releases from artists you follow or are likely to enjoy | Refreshes Friday |
| Fresh Finds | Editorial playlists focused on emerging artists, including genre-specific editions | Editorial schedule not stated in the cited sources |
| New Music Friday | Spotify’s new-release listening destination | Specific schedule not stated in the cited sources |
Spotify’s support page describes Discover Weekly as the Monday playlist of songs it thinks you will like and Spotify Mixes as personalized playlists based on artists, genres and decades (Spotify Support). Spotify’s explanation of its personalization products distinguishes Release Radar from Discover Weekly: Release Radar is Friday-focused and centered on new releases, while Discover Weekly can surface older tracks you missed as well as newer music (Spotify’s personalization explainer).
What the genre choices can—and cannot—do
They guide recommendations, rather than filter them
A genre selection is an input to Spotify’s recommendation system, not a permanent filter or manual playlist builder. Spotify does not promise that every track will fit one narrow label, that every song will be unfamiliar, or that the list will exclude artists you already know.

Expect overlap and adjacent styles
Genre labels can be broad or subjective, and Spotify’s algorithm may connect neighboring styles. A rock selection, for example, can still lead to artists or tracks that Spotify considers musically related rather than strictly classified under one tag.
Familiar songs may remain
Discover Weekly is intended to help listeners find new favorites and deeper cuts from artists they already enjoy. Genre controls shape that discovery; they do not guarantee an all-new or completely obscure track list. Spotify’s January 2026 description still frames Discover Weekly as a way to find music you may like, not as a strict novelty test (Spotify’s 2026 discovery guide).

Discover Weekly refreshes every Monday. If a recommendation matters, save the track or artist, or copy it into a personal playlist before the next refresh.

If the controls are missing
Check these possibilities in order:
- Account tier: Spotify’s public guidance identifies Premium users as the supported audience.
- Correct playlist: Make sure you opened Discover Weekly, not a Daily Mix, Spotify Mix or another personalized list.
- Rollout timing: Spotify has not published a complete global availability table, so the feature may not yet be enabled for your market or account.
- App and platform differences: Update Spotify and try the mobile app if you first checked desktop. These are practical troubleshooting steps, not published Spotify requirements.
- Interface changes: Spotify can move or rename controls as its app changes.
If your preferred genre is not listed, Spotify’s stated design offers no manual way to add an arbitrary genre. Listening to, saving or following more music in that style may give Spotify stronger history signals over time, but Spotify does not guarantee that doing so will make a particular control appear.
Why the feature matters
Discover Weekly already has a large audience. Spotify reported in June 2025 that the playlist had passed 100 billion tracks streamed, generated more than 56 million new artist discoveries per week, and that 77% of those discoveries came from emerging artists. These are Spotify’s own reported figures, not independently audited measurements (Spotify’s 10th-anniversary announcement).
The practical benefit of the controls is direction, not precision. They let you steer an otherwise automatic playlist toward several lanes while keeping the convenience of a ready-made queue. That suits listeners who want structured exploration without searching for every track themselves.

Is it worth using?
It is useful when you want guided exploration
Try it if you want to explore a genre you already hear occasionally, compare several related styles in one week, or make Spotify’s broad recommendations more focused.
It may disappoint if you want strict control
Listeners who require a pure genre list, only never-heard songs, or a permanent collection will get better results from Spotify search, genre hubs, editorial playlists and their own saved playlists. Discover Weekly remains algorithmic, and Spotify does not promise editorial review of every recommendation.
The Bottom Line
Spotify’s “new weekly genre discovery” feature is best understood as genre controls for Discover Weekly. Premium users with access can choose up to five personalized genre options and receive a 30-track playlist that refreshes Monday. It adds useful direction to Spotify’s existing discovery system, but it is not a separate playlist, a strict genre filter or a confirmed feature for every account.
