Streaming and download quality set how much audio data is sent and stored, with the highest tiers reserved for Premium. Volume normalization evens out loudness between tracks. Crossfade, Automix, and gapless playback control what happens between songs. None of these change the original recording, and all of them are locked while Spotify Connect is playing on another device.
Audio quality: choose the tier that fits your connection and storage
Spotify’s quality options depend on the plan you hold and the surface you use. The official Audio quality help page, in its Saudi Arabia English edition, separates the web player from the desktop, mobile, and tablet apps. The web player does not offer a music-quality selector at all.

Quality tiers at a glance
| Tier | Published figure | Where it appears |
|---|---|---|
| Web player (Free) | AAC 128 kbit/s | Spotify Free on the web player |
| Web player (paid tiers) | AAC 256 kbit/s | Paid plans on the web player, as listed in the same help table |
| Automatic | Adjusts to the connection | Desktop, mobile, and tablet apps |
| Low | Approximately 24 kbit/s | Desktop, mobile, and tablet apps |
| Normal | Approximately 96 kbit/s | Desktop, mobile, and tablet apps |
| High | Approximately 160 kbit/s | Desktop, mobile, and tablet apps |
| Very high | Approximately 320 kbit/s | Premium, desktop, mobile, and tablet apps |
| Lossless | Up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz FLAC | Premium, under the conditions described below |
These bitrates are Spotify’s own published equivalents, not independent measurements. Podcast quality follows a separate rule: approximately 96 kbit/s on apps other than the web player, where it is 128 kbit/s. On mobile and tablet, choosing Low for streaming also lowers podcasts to approximately 24 kbit/s.

Streaming, downloads, and data use
Spotify says that higher streaming quality uses more data and that higher download quality takes more storage. On mobile and tablet the app keeps separate settings for Wi-Fi, cellular, and downloads, so you can keep mobile-data use low while downloading at a higher tier for offline listening. Automatic adjustment is on by default and lowers quality when needed so music plays without stuttering. Leave it on unless you have a specific reason to fix a tier.

Lossless: what it needs before it works
Lossless is described as up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz FLAC and is a Premium feature. Spotify’s Lossless Audio Quality article, in its Albania edition, lists minimum app versions of mobile 9.0.58 and above and desktop 1.2.67 and above, along with some third-party devices.
Selecting Lossless does not guarantee lossless playback. Spotify lists these conditions:

- The original recording must be available in lossless form.
- The playback device must be compatible.
- The connection method must support it. Spotify notes that connection method affects the result.
- The connection must be stable. Spotify recommends: “We recommend a steady internet connection of 1.5 to 2 Mbps for the best lossless listening experience.”
Spotify also states that higher technical fidelity does not always produce a dramatically different sound, so it is worth A/B testing on your own equipment before assuming an audible gain.
Volume normalization: consistent loudness, not better sound
Spotify’s Volume normalization article, in its Bahrain English edition, states: “Volume normalization balances soft and loud songs, creating a more uniform listening experience.” The feature is labelled Premium. It changes playback loudness only; it does not alter the source recording.
Choosing a level: Loud, Normal, or Quiet
- Loud is intended for noisy environments. Spotify warns that it can make dynamic levels less pronounced.
- Normal is the default.
- Quiet is intended for quieter environments.
Turning it on
- iOS: profile picture → Settings and privacy → Playback → Enable Audio Normalization.
- Android: profile picture → Settings and privacy → Playback → Volume controls → Volume normalization.
- Desktop: profile picture → Settings → Audio Quality → Normalize volume.
Menu labels can differ by app version and language, so if a label does not match, look for the nearest equivalent under Playback or Audio Quality.

Crossfade, Automix, and gapless playback
These three transition options are easy to confuse, and they behave differently. Spotify’s Transitions between tracks article, in its Palau edition, covers all of them.
Crossfade
Crossfade overlaps two tracks: “Overlaps 2 tracks by fading out of the first while fading in the next.” It is labelled Premium.
- Mobile and tablet: profile picture → Settings and privacy → Playback → Crossfade slider.
- Desktop: profile picture → Settings → Playback → enable Crossfade songs → move the slider.
Automix
Automix creates beat-matched, seamless transitions on select Spotify playlists, and Spotify says it works even when Shuffle is on. It is labelled Premium and is not the same as Crossfade. On mobile and tablet, go to Playback → Track transitions → Automix. On desktop, go to Settings → Playback → Automix.

Gapless playback
Gapless playback removes the silence or pause between tracks. It is not the same as overlap. On mobile and tablet it sits under Playback → Track transitions. The cited article does not list a desktop control for it, so if you do not see one on desktop, the help page does not confirm that the option exists there.
Settings that override or block each other
Spotify Connect locks these settings
Spotify’s support pages state that these settings cannot be changed while Spotify Connect is playing to another device. If the controls appear greyed out, check whether playback is running on a speaker, TV, or another device, then transfer playback back to the device you are using and try again.

Exclusive Mode on Windows
Spotify’s Exclusive mode article, in its Montenegro English edition, describes an option for the Windows desktop app. It requires Premium and a compatible audio device selected in the app. While it is active, the app takes exclusive control of that device, so other applications cannot play sound through it at the same time.
Exclusive Mode changes the transitions as well. With it enabled, Crossfade produces a gap between tracks instead of a blend, and Automix seamless transitions are disabled.
Which setting to change
- Sound is cut off or stutters on mobile data: lower the cellular streaming tier, or keep Automatic on.
- You want the best sound on a stable connection: choose Very high on Premium, or try Lossless if your device and connection meet the conditions above.
- Tracks jump in loudness: turn on normalization and choose Quiet for quiet rooms or Loud for noisy ones.
- You want songs to blend: use Crossfade. For beat-matched blends on supported playlists, use Automix.
- You want no pauses at all, such as in a live recording: confirm gapless playback is on under Track transitions.
- You use Exclusive Mode on Windows: expect a gap between tracks and no Automix transitions.
Spotify’s support pages are published per market, and the editions cited here are regional versions (Saudi Arabia English, Albania, Bahrain English, Palau, and Montenegro English) as checked in October 2026. Plan entitlements and labels can vary by country, device, and app version. Where your menu differs, the in-app settings are the authority.
