In 2024, the most frequent causes are network resolution problems (DNS), blocked or filtered Spotify traffic (firewalls, parental controls, ad blockers), and inconsistent WiFi security settings (WPA mode, captive portals, band steering).
Before You Change Anything: Quick Checks
- Confirm it’s WiFi-only: open Spotify on cellular (5G/LTE/4G) and test playback for 30–60 seconds.
- Check your basics: verify the WiFi has internet access (load a web page on the same device).
- Try a different device: if another phone on the same WiFi works, the problem is device-specific; if all devices fail, it’s likely router/DNS.
- Restart the network (fast): power-cycle your router/modem: unplug 20 seconds, plug back in, wait 2–3 minutes.
7 Proven Fixes for Spotify Not Working on WiFi
Use these in sequence. Each fix targets a different layer: app, device networking, privacy tools, DNS, and router configuration.
1) Force Stop and Relaunch Spotify (Refresh the app session)
App sessions can get stuck on a specific network identity. Force stopping clears the active session and forces Spotify to re-auth to your current connection.
On iPhone/iPad you’ll fully close the app; on Android you can force stop in Settings.
2) Switch to Cellular, Then Back to WiFi (Confirm it’s a WiFi-only problem)
This quick toggle proves whether Spotify can load on mobile data. If cellular works immediately, the WiFi path is the culprit (DNS, firewall, captive portal, or router filtering).
After switching back, reconnect to your WiFi and re-open Spotify—don’t just resume from the background.

- Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
- Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
- Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
3) Turn WiFi Off/On and Reconnect (Remove stale network tokens)
WiFi can “stick” with old credentials or partially renewed network settings. Turning WiFi off clears the network interface state, then reconnecting refreshes the handshake.

Forget the network and re-join if reconnecting still doesn’t help (this step forces a fresh WiFi key negotiation).
4) Disable VPN/Private DNS/Ad Blocking on the Device
VPNs, Private DNS, and ad-blocking apps often block or redirect Spotify domains. On WiFi, these tools may behave differently than on cellular.
Temporarily disable them, then test Spotify again. If it works, you’ve identified the interference source.
5) Change DNS (Use 1.1.1.1 or 8.8.8.8 to bypass bad resolution)
When DNS resolution fails or returns “nearby” endpoints that are blocked, Spotify won’t load tracks even though the WiFi has internet.
Recommended Free Tools
Try DNS settings like 1.1.1.1 (Cloudflare) or 8.8.8.8 (Google) and retest playback.

6) Adjust Router WiFi and Security Settings (2.4 GHz vs 5 GHz, WPA mode, firewall)
Some routers block streaming services with aggressive firewall rules, parental controls, or DNS filtering. Also, band steering can cause intermittent connectivity.
Test on 2.4 GHz vs 5 GHz, set WiFi security to WPA2/WPA3 mixed, and disable any “security” features that filter traffic until Spotify works.
7) Clear Spotify Cache / Reinstall (Android focus) or Sign Out/In (iOS/macOS/Windows)
Corrupted cache and bad session cookies can stop playback on one network. Android users often fix it by clearing cache; others can fix it by signing out and back in or reinstalling the app.

Step 1: Compare WiFi vs cellular on the same device
If cellular works consistently, you don’t need to reinstall Spotify first. Focus on DNS, router filtering, and device-level privacy settings.
Step 2: Test with a different WiFi network
Try the same device on a different WiFi (friend’s network, hotspot WiFi). If Spotify works there, your home router settings are the likely cause.
Step 3: Check router-level features
Look for these settings in your router app or admin page (wording varies):
- Parental controls
- Content filtering / safe browsing
- Ad blocking or DNS filtering
- Firewall rules for “streaming” or “unknown traffic”
- Custom DNS and “block malicious domains” toggles
Step 4: Reset router to defaults (last resort)
If you can’t identify the setting, a controlled factory reset is a useful last resort. Document your previous SSID/password first so you can restore access without guessing.

- Only restarting Spotify, not the network: if DNS/firewall is broken, the app restart won’t fix it.
- Changing multiple variables at once: toggle DNS, then later change router settings. Test after each change so you know what worked.
- Ignoring 2.4 GHz vs 5 GHz: weak signal can appear like streaming failure, especially on smart TVs.
- Forgetting Private DNS/VPN: some devices re-enable DNS profiles automatically after reboot.
- Over-clearing data: on Android, “Clear storage” may log you out. Start with “Clear cache” first.
FAQs
Why does Spotify work on cellular but not on WiFi?
That pattern usually points to DNS resolution problems, router filtering/firewall rules, or device-level privacy tools (VPN/Private DNS/ad blockers) that apply differently on WiFi.

Does WPA3 cause Spotify to fail on WiFi?
Sometimes. Most modern clients handle WPA3 fine, but misconfigured router security modes (or band steering) can create unstable connectivity. Test WPA2/WPA3 mixed or WPA2 temporarily to confirm.
What if Spotify searches but playback fails on WiFi?
That often indicates streaming requests are blocked or failing mid-load. Re-check router firewall/content filtering and disable any DNS/ad-block features. DNS changes can also solve “search works, play doesn’t.”
Could it be Spotify’s servers?
Yes, occasionally. If multiple devices and multiple WiFi networks fail at the same time, check Spotify status and wait. If only your WiFi fails, focus on DNS/router/device settings first.
