If Spotify for Android updated and now the app won’t open or crashes immediately, you’re not alone. These failures usually come from a bad app state, an incomplete update, corrupted cache, or a dependency issue (Android System WebView, Google Play services, storage, or permissions).
This guide walks you through a practical recovery workflow—from the fastest fixes to deeper “clean state” steps—so you can get playback working again without guesswork.

Why a Spotify update can break Android installs
Most update-related crashes aren’t caused by “your account.” They’re typically caused by one of these:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Corrupted local app data left behind after the update.
- Cache incompatibility (old cached data no longer matches the new app version).
- Permission changes or a revoked permission the new build expects.
- Dependency conflicts—especially Android System WebView, Google Play services, or device security settings.
- Storage constraints preventing Spotify from writing required files.
Occasionally, the crash is tied to a specific Spotify version rollout affecting certain Android versions/devices. In those cases, a cache/data reset or reinstall often still resolves it, but you may need to wait for a follow-up release or temporarily use another path.

Before you change anything: quick checks
Before you reset or reinstall, confirm the problem scope. These checks reduce time wasted on the wrong fix.
Check whether it’s only Spotify
- Open another music app. If they work, the issue is likely Spotify-specific.
- Try launching Spotify on a different network (Wi‑Fi vs mobile data).
Confirm your Android version and device model
Go to Settings > About phone and note Android version (e.g., Android 14) and device model. Spotify’s compatibility can vary by Android version.
Note the Spotify version that started crashing
Open Play Store > Spotify > About. Record the version number if shown. You can use it later if you need to report the issue.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fast fixes that solve most Spotify crashes
Start with the steps that cost the least and fix the most common “can’t open” scenario after an update.
1) Force stop Spotify
- Open Settings.
- Go to Apps (or Apps > App management).
- Find and tap Spotify.
- Tap Force stop.
- Reopen Spotify and test playback.
If this works, the app was stuck in a bad state after the update.
2) Restart the phone
A simple reboot clears stuck services and can fix crashes caused by dependency initialization timing.
3) Clear Spotify cache (not data yet)
- Settings > Apps > Spotify.
- Tap Storage.
- Tap Clear cache.
- Open Spotify again.
Cache clearing is usually enough. Don’t clear data unless you have to.

4) Ensure Spotify has required permissions
After Android updates (or some app updates), permissions can get reset. Verify these for Spotify:
- Settings > Apps > Spotify > Permissions
- Enable Storage/Files and media if shown
- Enable Microphone if you use voice features
- Enable Notifications (not usually crash-related, but helps prevent odd states)
5) Update the dependencies Android apps require
Spotify relies on system and Google components. If they’re outdated, a new Spotify build might crash during startup.
- Open the Play Store.
- Search and update:
- Android System WebView
- Google Play services
- Google Chrome (optional, but often helps if WebView relies on it)
After updating, restart your phone and try Spotify again.
6) Free up storage
If storage is near full, apps can crash while writing logs or cached media.

- Go to Settings > Storage.
- Keep at least 1–2 GB free (more is better if Spotify downloads lots of offline music).
- Remove large files or unused downloads.
- Try Spotify again.
Clean reinstall without losing more than necessary
If cache clearing doesn’t fix the crash, the next move is a clean reinstall. This removes corrupted app state that may survive cache-only steps.
Step-by-step reinstall
- Go to Settings > Apps > Spotify.
- Tap Uninstall.
- Restart the phone.
- Open Play Store.
- Search for Spotify.
- Install the latest stable version.
- Open Spotify and sign in.
About offline downloads
Uninstalling typically removes downloaded offline tracks from the device. Playlists and account data remain on Spotify’s side, but you may need to re-download offline music after reinstall.
Clear data before reinstall (optional)
If uninstall isn’t possible (or you want to avoid uninstall), you can try a data reset:
- Settings > Apps > Spotify > Storage
- Tap Clear data
- Confirm
- Reopen Spotify and sign in
Clearing data is harsher than clearing cache and can log you out.

Android-side causes to rule out
Sometimes Spotify crashes because something about the device environment changed (security, WebView, or networking). Here are the most common culprits and how to test them.
Disable battery optimization for Spotify
Aggressive battery saving can break background startup code and lead to repeated crashes.
- Settings > Battery (or Battery & device care).
- Find Battery optimization / Optimize battery usage.
- Select Spotify.
- Set to Not optimized.
- Reboot and test.
Remove VPN, Private DNS, or ad blockers temporarily
Network filters can cause startup failures if Spotify can’t reach required endpoints.
- Turn off VPN apps
- Check Settings > Network & Internet > Private DNS and set to Off or Automatic
Update or reinstall Android System WebView
On many Android builds, WebView updates are the difference between a clean startup and a crash loop.
- Open Play Store
- Search Android System WebView
- Confirm it’s updated to the newest available version
- Restart and test
Try Safe Mode to detect another app conflict
If a different app injects into Spotify (screen recorders, theme managers, accessibility tools, some ad blockers), Safe Mode helps you confirm.
- Long-press the power button
- Hold the Power off option until Safe mode appears
- Tap Safe mode
Open Spotify in Safe Mode. If it works, uninstall or update the last few apps you installed before the Spotify crash started.
Check for Android WebView provider mismatch (Samsung devices often show this)
Some devices can have multiple WebView packages or disabled components. In Settings > Apps, search for “WebView” and ensure it’s enabled, then update it via Play Store if available.

Advanced recovery options
If you’re still stuck, these options help you confirm whether the crash is tied to a specific Spotify version.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallSwitch to Spotify beta (or back to stable)
If the crash started immediately after an update, the beta might be newer (or fixed). The stable channel might also be the problem if a specific build is broken for your device.
- Open Play Store.
- Search Spotify.
- Scroll to the app details and look for Join the beta or Leave beta (label can vary).
- Change the channel, wait for the update to install, then test.
Report the crash with device + version details
When you report, include:
- Android version (e.g., Android 14)
- Device model (e.g., Pixel 7a, Galaxy S23)
- Spotify version number
- What happens exactly (e.g., “opens splash screen then crashes within 2 seconds”)
- Steps you already tried
Use the Play Store “Rate this app” to send feedback and also contact Spotify support if needed.
Temporarily sideload a previous APK (only if you know what you’re doing)
This can work when a specific update is broken, but it carries security risk. If you go this route:
- Only use APK sources you trust (ideally not random mirror sites).
- Disable installation from unknown sources and re-enable after.
- Expect Play Protect warnings.
On some Android versions, sideloading can also fail due to signature mismatch. If you can’t install, don’t keep trying blindly—go back to official fixes and wait for a patched release.

What to do if it still crashes after reinstall
If Spotify won’t open even after a clean reinstall, use this checklist to isolate the cause.
1) Try a different network
- Turn off Wi‑Fi.
- Test over mobile data.
- Then test again over Wi‑Fi.
2) Remove custom DNS / Private DNS
- Open Settings > Network & Internet
- Tap Private DNS
- Set to Off or Automatic
- Restart and test
3) Check date/time settings
Wrong system time can break authentication and cause startup errors.
- Settings > System > Date & time
- Enable Set time automatically
- Retry Spotify
4) Gather crash logs (useful for support)
If you can, capture what happens when Spotify crashes.
- On many Android builds, you can view crash dialogs in Settings > Apps or via the system “App info” page.
- If you’re technical, use logcat from Android Studio for the timestamp you reproduce the crash.
Even a short log snippet with the exception code helps support pinpoint whether it’s a specific module failure.

Spotify on the web
If your account still works, try Spotify in a browser (music often streams fine even when the Android app crashes).
Cast to another device
If you have a smart speaker or TV, you can often cast from another working device (iPhone, iPad, iPadOS device, or a computer) while you fix Android.
Use iPhone/iPad or macOS temporarily
If the issue seems limited to your Android device, installing or using Spotify on iPhone, iPad, or macOS can confirm whether the crash is device-specific.
Common mistakes that make crashes worse
- Clearing data repeatedly without updating dependencies (you lose settings and don’t fix the underlying issue).
- Ignoring storage (low space can cause persistent startup failures).
- Testing only one scenario (always try Wi‑Fi vs mobile data).
- Leaving VPN/DNS filters on when troubleshooting network-related crashes.
- Restoring from the same corrupted state (if you cleared cache/data, avoid reintroducing the same conditions immediately—restart first).
FAQs
Why does Spotify crash right after an update?
It’s usually a corrupted cache/data state from the previous version, or a dependency like Android System WebView or Google Play services that’s out of date. A cache clear or clean reinstall resolves it most of the time.
Will I lose my Spotify playlists if I uninstall the app?
No. Playlists are tied to your Spotify account. Uninstalling can remove downloaded offline tracks stored on your device, but your library and playlists should remain.
Is it safe to clear Spotify data?
It’s safe, but it resets the app’s local state. Expect to sign in again and potentially re-download offline music. It’s a reasonable next step if clearing cache doesn’t work.
Could the crash be caused by Android itself, not Spotify?
Yes. If system components like WebView or Google Play services are broken or outdated, a new Spotify build may fail during startup. Updating dependencies and verifying permissions are often the deciding factors.
What if nothing works and Spotify keeps crashing?
Try Safe Mode, remove VPN/Private DNS, confirm date/time is automatic, and update WebView + Play services. If the crash still persists, report the issue with your Spotify version and device/Android version—there may be a fixed build soon.
Should I uninstall Spotify updates or downgrade?
Downgrading can work if a specific Spotify version is broken for your device, but it’s not the first choice. Prefer cache/data reset, dependency updates, and reinstall before sideloading any older APK.
Bottom Line
When Spotify for Android won’t open after an update, you can usually recover quickly by force stopping, clearing cache, updating Android System WebView and Google Play services, and then doing a clean reinstall. Those steps remove the corrupted state and fix common dependency issues that trigger crash loops.
If it still crashes, isolate the cause with Safe Mode and network/DNS changes, then report your exact Spotify version and device details so the fix can land faster for everyone impacted.
