Spotify has acknowledged an Android app issue that can cause the app to freeze, hang on launch, or crash mid-playback for some users. If you’re seeing those symptoms, the fastest wins usually come from clearing the right data and resetting the app state—while also verifying that your Spotify build hasn’t already been patched.
This guide is written for the real-world scenario: your music stops, the app becomes unresponsive, Android pops a crash dialog, or playback repeatedly fails. You’ll get step-by-step fixes, practical workarounds, and a clean way to confirm whether you’re hitting the same bug (or a different problem).

What Spotify’s Android crash/freezing issue looks like
When the bug hits, the behavior tends to be consistent. Common reports include the app freezing on startup, becoming unresponsive during navigation (Search, Library), or crashing when starting a specific track/podcast episode.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTypical signs you’re affected:
- Freezing: Spotify UI stops responding, and the screen may stay on the same view for 30–60 seconds.
- Crashing: Android shows a dialog such as Spotify has stopped, or the app closes immediately after tapping play.
- Playback failures: music may start briefly, then stop and return you to the previous screen.
- Repeated triggers: the same action (opening a playlist, selecting an episode, switching devices) reproduces the problem.
Prerequisites: before you troubleshoot
Before changing anything, gather a few details. This saves time and helps you verify whether a fix is already available.

Fast fixes that resolve most freezing/crashing reports
Start with actions that reset Spotify’s state without heavy effort. Perform them in order.
1) Force stop Spotify
Android sometimes gets stuck in a bad in-memory state. Forcing a stop can clear it.

2) Check for a Spotify update in Google Play
If Spotify confirmed a bug, they usually ship a fix quickly. You want the latest patched build.
- Open Google Play Store.
- Search Spotify.
- Tap Update if it appears (or Installed to confirm version).
- Open Spotify and test again.
3) Clear cache (first) rather than data
Cache corruption is a common cause of freezes. Try it before clearing the whole app.
- Settings > Apps > Spotify
- Tap Storage
- Tap Clear cache
- Reopen Spotify
4) If it still crashes: clear storage/data
If cache clearing doesn’t help, wipe Spotify’s stored app data. This may sign you out and remove offline downloads.
- Settings > Apps > Spotify
- Tap Storage
- Tap Clear storage (or Clear data)
- Reopen Spotify and sign in
5) Reboot the phone
This is basic, but it works when the issue is compounded by background process conflicts.
- Hold Power button
- Tap Restart
- Test Spotify after the phone boots fully
Advanced troubleshooting (one change at a time)
If the quick fixes don’t stop the freezing/crashing, move into deeper checks. Do one change, test, then decide what to try next.

Disable battery saver / power restrictions for Spotify
Battery optimization can interrupt playback and cause the UI to stall or fail when Spotify tries to resume audio.
- Open Settings > Battery (or Battery & device care).
- Find Battery optimization or App battery usage.
- Select Spotify.
- Set it to Unrestricted (wording varies).
- Test playback and navigation.
Turn off VPN and ad blockers temporarily
Network interception can break authentication or streaming sessions, leading to repeat crashes.
- Disable your VPN (or private DNS) from Android settings.
- Pause or uninstall third-party ad blockers.
- Restart Spotify and test.
Reset network settings if crashes correlate with connectivity
If Spotify crashes when you switch Wi‑Fi/mobile data, resetting network config can help.
- Open Settings > System (or General management on some phones)
- Tap Reset
- Choose Reset Wi‑Fi, mobile & Bluetooth
- Reconnect and test Spotify
Check storage space
Low storage can cause background failures and corrupted caches—especially if you use offline downloads.
- Try to keep at least 1–2 GB free.
- Delete large unused apps or media if you’re tight on space.
Update Android System WebView and Chrome
Some Spotify screens rely on embedded web components. If WebView is outdated, you can see UI hangs.
- Open Google Play Store
- Search Android System WebView and Google Chrome
- Update both to the latest available versions
- Reopen Spotify
Remove conflicting “app optimization” or “cleaner” tools
Third-party cleaners, memory optimizers, or task killers can interfere with Spotify’s background playback.
- Identify tools that auto-close apps.
- Disable their auto-task/auto-clean feature.
- Test Spotify for 10–15 minutes of continuous playback.
Check for the specific Spotify Android app bug and confirm it’s the cause
You can’t always prove a crash is “the” confirmed bug, but you can validate patterns quickly.

Compare when it started:
- Same day as Spotify update: more likely an app regression.
- Same day as WebView/Android update: could be a dependency mismatch.
- Only on one network: could be routing/DNS/VPN-related.
Test on another network and another output
Use controlled tests to narrow it down:
- Switch from Wi‑Fi to mobile data (or vice versa).
- Disable “data saver” if enabled.
- Try playback on a single device output (phone speaker only) before using Bluetooth.
Disable offline mode downloads (temporary)
If crashes happen when selecting downloaded content, you may have a corrupted offline cache.

Workarounds while you wait for a fix
If you need Spotify right now, workarounds can get you through the outage window or until the next app build lands.
Use another Spotify client (same account)
Try logging into Spotify on a different device using the same account to keep your playlists and recommendations intact.
- Android on another phone/tablet
- Spotify on a computer browser
- Spotify desktop app (Windows/macOS) if you have one
Use web playback (Spotify in browser) instead of the Android app
If the Android app freezes on the phone but streaming works elsewhere, you can switch to browser playback temporarily.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- On the same Android phone, open a browser like Chrome.
- Go to Spotify web player URL.
- Sign in with the same account.
- Start playback and test navigation.
Avoid the trigger screen until you update
If you notice the crash happens when opening a specific section (for example, Search results or Podcasts), avoid that flow until you update.
- Try starting playback from a known-good playlist.
- Then use Now Playing controls rather than browsing screens.
Device and Android version considerations
Different Android skins and OS versions handle background processes differently. The same app bug can show up more on certain devices.
Samsung (One UI) considerations
Samsung devices often have aggressive background management options. Ensure Spotify is allowed in the app power settings and that “sleeping apps” or similar restrictions aren’t enabled for Spotify.
- Open Settings > Battery and device care
- Tap Battery
- Find App power management
- Select Spotify and set to Unrestricted
Pixel / stock Android considerations
On Pixel phones, keep an eye on battery optimization and background data restrictions. Also check if “Data Saver” is enabled.
- Go to Settings > Network & internet
- Tap Data Saver and turn it off temporarily
- Test Spotify playback
Older Android versions
If you’re on a significantly older Android build, WebView or runtime components may lag behind. Updating system components (WebView/Chrome) can matter as much as updating Spotify.

When the app won’t open: recovery path
If Spotify crashes immediately on launch, follow this “no excuses” path. It’s designed to rebuild the app state with minimal back-and-forth.
- Force stop Spotify
- Reboot the phone
- Verify Spotify update is installed from Google Play
- Clear cache
- If still failing: Clear storage/data
- Update Android System WebView and Google Chrome
- Temporarily disable VPN/private DNS
If none of the steps help, use the bug-report method below so Spotify engineers can correlate your crash logs with the known issue.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to report the bug to Spotify effectively
Sending a good report increases the odds that the team can reproduce your crash and ship a targeted fix. Don’t just say “it crashes.” Include the details they need.
Capture what to include
- Spotify version
- Android version and device model
- Exact behavior (freeze on launch, crash when opening Podcasts, crash on offline playback, etc.)
- Steps to reproduce (1–2 minutes max)
- Whether it happens on Wi‑Fi, mobile data, or both
- Any recent updates (Spotify update, Android/WebView update)
Where to report
Use Spotify’s in-app feedback channel if available, or submit through the official Spotify help/bug reporting flow. Include crash timing and app version.
If your phone supports it, also consider capturing a bug report from Android (Settings > About phone > Bug report, or a similar path). That can include logs engineers need.
Alternatives if Spotify is down for your phone
If you’re blocked for hours or until a patched build lands, these alternatives preserve your listening without losing account access.
Listen on web player
Spotify’s web player typically works even when a specific Android build is failing. Sign in and continue listening while you troubleshoot.

Try a different Android device for the same account
Log into Spotify on another phone. If it works there, your original device has either a configuration conflict or a dependency issue (or a very specific offline cache problem).
Common mistakes that make it worse
- Repeatedly clearing data without updating: you lose local state and keep running the buggy build.
- Ignoring offline corruption: if downloads are the trigger, clearing only cache won’t fully fix it.
- Using multiple “optimizer” tools: memory cleaners and battery optimizers can race Spotify’s background processes.
- Switching too many variables at once: if you change Wi‑Fi, VPN, and settings in one go, troubleshooting becomes guesswork.
FAQs
Is this a Spotify account problem or a phone problem?
Most freezing/crashing reports tied to a specific Android app bug are phone/build-specific. Testing on another device with the same account is the quickest way to confirm.
Will clearing storage delete my downloads?
Yes, clearing Spotify storage typically removes local/offline content and may sign you out. After sign-in, re-download anything you need offline.
Recommended Free Tools
Why does Spotify crash only when I play certain playlists or podcasts?
Corrupted offline metadata or a specific content item that triggers a code path can cause consistent crashes. Remove downloads for that item and test streaming online, then update Spotify.
What if Spotify still crashes after I update?
If updating doesn’t help, clear cache, then clear storage. Next, update Android System WebView/Chrome and disable VPN/private DNS to rule out dependency and network interception issues.
Should I uninstall Spotify?
Uninstalling can help, but it’s usually slower and less controlled than clearing cache/storage. If you do uninstall, reinstall the latest version from Google Play and test immediately after setup.
How long does it take for Spotify’s fix to reach everyone?
Google Play rollout can be staged. If your update doesn’t appear right away, it may land in the next hours or a few days. Using the web player can bridge the gap.
Bottom Line
If your Spotify Android app is freezing and crashing, start with the high-probability fixes: update Spotify, force stop, clear cache, then clear storage if needed. Most cases improve once the app state is reset and you’re on the latest patched build.
If it still fails, narrow down the trigger with network/output/offline tests and report a detailed reproduction case to Spotify. That’s the fastest route from “it crashes” to a fix that actually lands for your device and Android build.
