Spotify’s app updates keep getting more practical: the latest rollout adds playlist sorting so your Library behaves the way you expect, and DJ requests so you can steer what Spotify plays while a DJ session is running.
If you’ve ever had dozens of playlists and no consistent way to find the right one, or you’ve started a DJ for background music and wished you could “request one more,” these changes are aimed right at that frustration.

Before you start: requirements and what to update
Before troubleshooting feature availability, do the boring checks. They save time.
- Update Spotify to the newest version available in your app store or check the desktop app for updates.
- Confirm network access (Wi‑Fi or mobile data). Some playback/assistant features won’t fully initialize on restricted networks.
- Sign in to the account you actually use for your playlists and DJ sessions.
Quick checklist you can do in under a minute:
- Open the Spotify app.
- Go to Settings (usually via your profile icon).
- Check About or the version screen if available.
- Update from the App Store / Google Play if your build is behind.
Playlist sorting: how it works and where to find it
Playlist sorting changes how playlists appear in your Library. Instead of scrolling until your eyes blur, you pick an order and Spotify arranges your playlists accordingly.
In most builds, sorting is controlled from the Library/Playlists screen where you manage and browse playlists.
iPhone and iPad (iOS/iPadOS)
- Open Spotify.
- Tap Your Library (bottom-right).
- Enter Playlists (or browse to your playlists list).
- Look for a Sort or Sort by control near the top of the playlist list.
- Select the sort order you want (commonly options like name-based or recently updated/added patterns, depending on the rollout).
If you don’t see a sort control, use the troubleshooting section below—often it’s just an app update or account-side rollout delay.
Android
- Open Spotify on your Android phone or tablet.
- Go to Your Library.
- Open Playlists.
- Find Sort/Sort by at the top of the list.
- Pick your preferred sorting option.
On some Android builds, the sort control appears as a small icon or a dropdown rather than a full button—scroll to the top of the playlists list to confirm.

Windows and macOS (desktop app)
- Launch the Spotify desktop app.
- Click Your Library in the left sidebar.
- Open Playlists.
- Look for sorting controls near the playlist list header (often next to view options).
- Select a sort order from the dropdown/menu.
If you use a trackpad, you can quickly scroll through sorted results without losing your place because the list stays in the selected order.

Spotify’s exact sort options can differ by rollout and platform. Typical categories include alphabetical/name-based sorting and sorting driven by recency (such as recently added or recently updated behavior).
Also note what sorting usually doesn’t do:
- It won’t merge or rename playlists automatically.
- It doesn’t change playlist contents; it only changes display order.
- It won’t override your own manual playlist naming strategy—if you want full control, you may still rename playlists (for example, prefix with numbers like 01/02 for custom ordering).
Gotchas and edge cases with sorting
- Sorting resets after navigation: sometimes the app remembers your choice only for the current screen. Re-select the sort if you bounce between Library views.
- Mixed playback providers: if your account switches between device sessions, sorting controls can momentarily lag while the app syncs.
- Downloaded vs. all playlists: ensure you’re sorting the same playlist scope you intend (e.g., downloaded-only views can behave differently).
DJ requests: how to ask for songs while Spotify DJ plays
DJ requests are about control. Instead of passively listening to what Spotify chooses, you can ask for more of a style, a specific song, or a vibe while the session is active.
Exact UI labels can vary (Spotify may call it “DJ requests,” “requests,” or “ask DJ”), but the flow is consistent: start DJ, then request.
iPhone and iPad (iOS/iPadOS)
- Open Spotify and start playback.
- Start Spotify DJ (commonly via Home suggestions, device controls, or a DJ card when available).
- While DJ is playing, look for a request field/button in the Now Playing view.
- Type your request (for example: “more like this,” “play something upbeat,” or the name/artist of a track).
- Send the request and wait for the next queue update.
If the request field isn’t visible, check whether you’re actually in a DJ session (not just a normal radio/playlist), then update the app and retry.

- Open Spotify and play something.
- Start Spotify DJ from the DJ prompt/card when it appears.
- Open Now Playing.
- Find the DJ requests input (usually in the DJ UI overlay).
- Enter your request and submit.
On some screens, you may need to scroll or expand the Now Playing panel to expose the request controls.

Desktop (Windows/macOS)
- Open Spotify desktop and start playback.
- Start Spotify DJ when you see the DJ option/card.
- In the playback window (Now Playing), look for the request control associated with DJ.
- Enter your request and send.
If you don’t see the request control on desktop but you see DJ running, the feature may not be enabled for your account on that platform yet—use the alternatives section below.
How DJ requests behave in real sessions
DJ requests typically influence what comes next rather than instantly forcing an exact track (unless Spotify’s understanding is very confident). Your prompt works best when it’s clear and constrained.
- Vibe requests (“more danceable tracks,” “indie rock from the 2010s”) usually steer the style.
- Artist/song requests (“play Dua Lipa,” “more songs by Tool”) tend to be more direct.
- Constraint length: shorter requests often work better than multi-clause sentences.
If you request something very niche, expect a couple of tracks of “settling” before the DJ converges.
Common failures and how to fix them
If DJ requests don’t appear or don’t seem to do anything, these are the most common causes:
- You’re not in a DJ session: you may be in a playlist or radio, not DJ.
- Feature rollout mismatch: your mobile app has the feature, but desktop hasn’t received it yet (or vice versa).
- Playback device handoff: switching output devices mid-session can reset the UI.
- Connectivity issues: delayed or failed updates can make requests appear ignored.
Making playlist sorting and DJ requests work together
These features pair nicely if you treat playlists as your “inputs” and DJ requests as your “real-time steering.” Sort your playlists so you can pick the right starting point quickly, then use DJ requests to keep the momentum.

Sort by name so the playlist list is easy for you to navigate while you’re multitasking. Start DJ and make short, direct requests like “keep it pop” or “more 2000s hits.”

Use sorting to surface your recently added playlists. When you find one that matches a mood, start DJ and request “more like this” to extend discovery without manually queueing track after track.
Troubleshooting checklist
When the Spotify app features don’t behave as expected, don’t guess—run through a tight checklist in order.
Feature missing after updating
- Update fully: on iOS/iPadOS, close Spotify completely and reopen after the update finishes.
- Restart the app: force-quit Spotify on mobile, relaunch on desktop.
- Switch devices: if you can access the feature on one platform but not another, that’s strong evidence it’s rollout- or account-scoped.
- Check login: confirm you’re signed into the correct Spotify account (especially if you manage multiple profiles).
Sorting won’t apply or resets
- Re-select the sort order: some views remember only until you navigate away.
- Check for view filters: make sure you’re in the same playlist list context when you change sort.
- Clear UI state (safe approach): back out to Library and re-enter Playlists to force UI refresh.
DJ requests are greyed out or ignored
- Confirm DJ session: look for DJ-specific UI in Now Playing.
- Try a different request format: switch from a long sentence to a short vibe (“more upbeat”) or an artist name.
- Wait for the next track: a request may affect the next queue update, not the current track.
- Check output device: if you’re casting or switching speakers, pause once and resume after the device settles.
App crashes or playback restarts
- Update again: a crash can be a known bug fixed in the next build.
- Reduce background load: on mobile, close other heavy apps and test again.
- Reinstall as a last resort: only if you’ve tried restarts and you’re stuck on a persistent issue.
Alternatives if your account/app doesn’t have the features yet
If playlist sorting or DJ requests aren’t showing up on your build, you still have workable options today.
Manual playlist organization
- Rename playlists with numeric prefixes (example:
01 - Focus,02 - Chill,03 - Gym), so alphabetical ordering mimics your custom layout. - Create fewer “catch-all” playlists and split by mood to reduce the need for frequent sorting.
Search-first discovery during DJ-style playback
Start playback with a relevant playlist, then use search while it runs to find tracks you want next. Queue them manually so the session doesn’t depend on DJ requests.
Use station/radio as a fallback
If your account lacks DJ requests but you want dynamic continuation, use radio/station-style playback from a track or artist. It won’t be “request-driven” in the same UI, but it gets you closer to the same continuous listening experience.

Why don’t I see playlist sorting in my Spotify app?
Most often it’s rollout timing. Spotify typically enables features gradually by account and app version. Update Spotify, restart the app, and check whether the feature appears on another platform logged into the same account.
Can I sort playlists differently for each device?
In practice, sorting may be remembered per device/app session rather than synced globally. If you notice it reverting, re-select the sort order after switching screens.
Do DJ requests work with any DJ session?
DJ requests are tied to the DJ interface. If you’re playing a normal playlist or radio, you may not see the request control. Make sure you launched Spotify DJ and the Now Playing screen shows DJ-specific UI.
