Sports card grading combines three separate services: checking whether a card is authentic, assessing its condition on a particular company’s scale, and sealing it in a labeled holder. A grade is not a price appraisal, and paying to submit a card does not guarantee a high grade or a profit. Whether grading makes sense depends on the card’s likely grade, comparable sold prices, the full cost of submission and sale, and what you want from the card.
What sports card grading does—and what a grade means
Grading is not one judgment. A company first considers authenticity and possible alteration, then evaluates condition under its own standards. If accepted, the card is encapsulated in a holder with a label that identifies the grade and, depending on the company, certification information. PSA, for example, says cards must pass its authentication review before they proceed to condition grading; it then encapsulates accepted cards with the grade and certification number on the label. See Professional Sports Authenticator (PSA), Grading Standards and its grading service information, accessed October 4, 2026.

The number describes condition according to the named grader’s scale. It is not a universal measurement shared identically by every company, nor does it establish what a buyer will pay. When discussing or comparing a slab, identify the grader and label era as well as the number.

Common considerations include centering, corners, edges, surface, print quality, and signs of alteration. These judgments are not always mechanical. PSA says eye appeal and market acceptability may affect its call when a card is near a boundary between grades.

- Recently we have received some complaints about some bad reviews because we only sent magnifying glasses. In order to protect the environment, we try to reduce excess packaging materials, we found that the box of the magnifying glass can hold all the items in the set, so the box of the magnifying glass became a simple box
- Some buyers received the goods without opening the box, thinking they received the magnifying glass, but did not know that the box was full of all the things, began to exchange, refund, bad reviews, complaints. This led to most of our inventory being banned by Amazon and losing a lot of goods.
- It is we did not write clearly the box contains all the goods led to some friends misunderstanding, if you receive the goods, please open the box to check. If you have bad reviews or complaints, we sincerely hope that you can modify the instructions according to the actual situation, thank you very much.

PSA’s and CGC’s top-grade descriptions
PSA calls its grade 10 “Gem Mint” and describes it as “a virtually perfect card.” Its published guidance describes sharp corners, sharp focus, and full original gloss, while allowing a slight printing imperfection if overall appeal is not impaired. It gives approximate centering tolerances of 55/45 on the front and 75/25 on the reverse. Those are PSA’s guidelines, not a promise that meeting only the centering figures earns a 10.
CGC Cards uses its own scale, including Pristine 10, Gem Mint 10, Mint+ 9.5, and Mint 9. Its grading scale describes Pristine 10 as reserved for cards flawless under 10-times magnification. For sports and non-sports cards, CGC’s Mint 9 description specifies centering of 60/40 or better on the front and 90/10 on the back; its Gem Mint 10 description gives approximate tolerances of 55/45 front and 75/25 reverse. These are CGC’s standards, not a direct equivalence to another company’s grade.

- This kit includes two sets of sports trading cards measuring tools (a total of four cards), A set of LED detail observation aids,A 30x portable detail observation aid, a black magnifier line, one pair of white cotton gloves, one pair of black latex gloves, and two ultra-fine microfiber cloths (one black and one white).
- The 2021 pure black version of the card centering grading tool had issues with line confusion during comparison. The upgraded version addresses this by incorporating red and black intersecting lines for clearer contrast. The set comes with both the old and new versions of the tool. Instructions for using the sports cards grading kit are provided on the back of the paper card, and a centering guide is included in the package.
- In 2024, the grid of the sports cards grading kit was remeasured, enhancing the precision from 0.07 to 0.02 millimeters. This represents a more than threefold increase in accuracy compared to the 2021 version.
- The set of LED detail observation aids can be used handheld or in a fixed position. The 30x portable detail observation aid is suitable for use in scenarios like going out or attending card exhibitions.
- The black latex gloves are for initial handling of the cards and gripping the sports trading cards measuring tools and cards for increased traction. The white cotton gloves are for removing fingerprints from polished cards, and the microfiber cloths are for wiping dust off the cards.
Check the label era when comparing older CGC/CSG slabs: CGC says legacy CGC/CSG 9.5 Gem Mint grades map to the updated CGC Cards Gem Mint 10 label. The company’s current scale and its legacy labels therefore should not be treated as identical without checking which label is on the card.

A numeric grade does not, by itself, tell the whole story about authenticity or alteration. PSA lists no-grade outcomes for issues including trimming, restoration, recoloring, questionable authenticity, altered stock, cleaning, minimum size, and miscut; some such outcomes may still incur fees. CGC separately lists “Authentic” and “Authentic Altered” designations. Do not clean, press, recolor, trim, or otherwise alter a card in preparation for submission.

When is it worth getting a sports card graded?
There is no supported universal dollar threshold or guaranteed grading premium. Evaluate each card against plausible outcomes—including a lower grade than you hope for—and compare what you might net with grading to what you could reasonably receive for the card raw. Use completed sales for the exact card, including its parallel or variation where relevant, and compare like with like by grader and grade when possible. An asking price is not proof that a card sold for that amount.
- Identify the exact card. Confirm the player, set, year, parallel or variation, and any other distinguishing details before looking for price comparisons.
- Inspect it without manipulating it. Under good light, look at centering, corners, edges, surface, print quality, and any signs of alteration. A visual pre-screen can help you think through possible outcomes; it cannot guarantee a professional grade.
- Estimate more than one grade scenario. Compare recent completed sales for the exact card raw and, where available, in relevant grades and grading-company holders. Include a conservative outcome rather than assuming the best possible grade.
- Calculate the full cost and net result. Include the grading fee, shipping to and from the grader, insurance where applicable, any membership or intermediary charge, selling fees, and the time the card will be unavailable. Compare the likely net sale proceeds after those costs with the amount you could reasonably receive selling it raw.
- Decide whether non-financial benefits matter to you. Authentication, encapsulation, registry participation, or display may be worthwhile personal goals even when a financial return is uncertain.
A declared-value cap is a boundary used under a company’s submission terms; it is not a valuation guarantee. Read the current declared-value rules and submission terms for the service you choose. The official grading pages cited here do not establish a reliable market-wide premium, grade distribution, or universal break-even price.

PSA says its turnaround estimates are not guaranteed and can change with volume and capacity. CGC likewise says turnaround estimates are not guaranteed; its listed fees apply to direct submissions by Collector members, and membership discounts and declared-value policies can affect the final cost. Beckett’s temporary Express form was for submissions to its Plano, Texas headquarters, and the company said availability could change with demand and backlog. These are dated service snapshots, not stable promises or a complete measure of which grader suits a particular card.

Choose by use case and submission terms
- For resale: Use comparable completed sales for the exact card, grader, and grade where possible. The cited official service pages do not establish that one company always produces a higher resale price.
- For authentication or protection: Consider whether the company’s authentication process and encapsulation meet your goal, separately from the grade you hope to receive.
- For collection display or registry participation: Treat these as personal benefits, not a promised financial return.
- For any submission: Confirm the current service status, fee, declared-value tier, eligibility, membership or minimum-quantity rules, turnaround estimate, geography, and shipping requirements on the company’s own pages before sending a card.
How to prepare and ship a card for grading
Follow the destination company’s current packing directions; procedures can differ. CGC’s instructions call for an individual protective sleeve and then a semi-rigid sleeve, with cardboard protection and packing material inside a sturdy box.
- Place each card in an individual protective sleeve, then place it in a semi-rigid sleeve.
- Put the protected cards between larger pieces of cardboard and secure them without overtightening.
- Add packing material and ship in a sturdy cardboard box, following the grader’s current submission and shipping instructions.
CGC warns that overly tight packing can cause damage and says the sender is responsible for safely shipping cards to the company. Protective sleeves, semi-rigid sleeves, and careful packing help reduce handling and shipping risk; they do not improve the card’s grade. A loupe or centering tool may help with an informal pre-screen, but neither is established here as necessary or authoritative for predicting a professional grade.
