Spoon.net Review: What Happened and What Replaced It?

Spoon.net gave way to Turbo.net and Turbo Studio. Here’s what the successor does, how it packages Windows apps, and what compatibility claims still need testing.

Spoon.net is no longer the name of the active product. Its application-virtualization technology continued under the Turbo brand, and the current products to consider are Turbo Studio and Turbo.net. If you are looking for a new Spoon.net review, the useful question is whether Turbo’s current packaging and deployment options fit your Windows applications—not whether the legacy Spoon service is still available.

What happened to Spoon.net?

Spoon.net was an early platform for application virtualization and streaming Windows software. Trade coverage described Spoon as a pioneer in application virtualization and cloud computing in 2012. The product line later adopted Turbo branding: Turbo release notes refer to users of earlier Spoon Studio versions, and current product documentation describes Turbo Studio and Turbo.net.

That history makes Spoon.net a legacy brand rather than a current product to evaluate on its own. The active successor family is Turbo.net, including Turbo Studio for creating virtualized applications.

What does Turbo do?

Turbo virtualizes Windows applications so they can run in isolated environments without a conventional installation. Turbo Studio turns an application and its dependencies into a package that can be delivered in several ways, including as a standalone executable, a Turbo image for Turbo Client, or a package for Turbo Server.

Turbo’s VM engine implements key operating-system functions in user mode, including filesystem, registry, process, and threading subsystems. Its documentation says this approach avoids installing drivers, requiring administrative privileges, or modifying the system. Depending on configuration, virtual files and registry entries can be isolated from the host, merged with host resources, copied on write, or hidden.

This design is intended to help with dependency conflicts and repeatable application delivery. It does not mean every application will work without configuration: application behavior and compatibility still need to be checked in the environment where the package will be used.

How can Turbo applications be built and delivered?

Creating a package with Turbo Studio

Turbo Studio supports setup capture, snapshots, and workflows for installing an application in a clean environment before packaging it. It supports 32-bit and 64-bit applications, embedded runtimes such as .NET and Java, and components including services, databases, DCOM, and side-by-side assemblies.

Studio can produce standalone EXE files and MSIs, as well as Turbo images and packages for server or cloud delivery. See the Turbo Studio application virtualization documentation for current product details.

Delivering applications through Turbo Server

Turbo Server supports virtual, native, and web applications. Depending on the deployment, users can receive applications deployed to their desktops or access them through browser-based HTML5 streaming or a native client, without installing the application locally.

These are distinct delivery options, not interchangeable guarantees: the right method depends on the application, the intended client environment, and how the organization configures its Turbo deployment.

Can Spoon applications run on modern Windows?

The available product information establishes that Turbo Studio supports 32-bit and 64-bit Windows applications, but it does not establish blanket compatibility for every application created with Spoon or for every modern Windows configuration. A specific legacy package should be tested on the target Windows version and with its required runtimes, services, drivers, and host integrations. Where a package cannot be recreated from its original installer or dependencies, migration may be more difficult.

Can you import packages from other virtualization tools?

Turbo Studio documents import support for Microsoft App-V, VMware ThinApp, MSI, and ZENworks package formats. Import support is not proof that every package will migrate unchanged. In particular, App-V import is documented as beta in Turbo Studio 22.9 and later, so each application should be validated for startup, functionality, dependencies, and deployment behavior after import.

How should Spoon’s old speed claim be interpreted?

An archival Spoon Streaming White Paper claimed that “Spoon streaming allows most applications to launch over 5 to 20 times faster than traditional download-based software distribution.” This is a historical vendor claim, not a current independent benchmark or a guarantee of Turbo performance today. The figure should not be used to predict launch times for a modern deployment.

What should you evaluate before choosing Turbo?

For a real migration or deployment decision, compare the product with alternatives such as Microsoft App-V, MSIX, or virtual desktop infrastructure against the needs of your applications and organization:

  • Packaging and isolation: How are applications and dependencies packaged, and how much filesystem, registry, and runtime isolation is required?
  • Application coverage: Do the target applications rely on legacy 32-bit components, services, drivers, or host integrations?
  • Delivery destination: Do users need local EXE or MSI packages, a server deployment, browser streaming, cloud access, or delivery through VDI?
  • Operations: What are the requirements for administrative privileges, centralized policy, updates, and migration from existing package formats?
  • Lifecycle and cost: Confirm current licensing, total operating cost, support terms, and product lifecycle directly with the vendor before committing.

No current independent review score or verified pricing figure is established here. Those details should be confirmed with Turbo rather than inferred from Spoon’s history.
