“Spooky” usually describes an eerie, supernatural, or Halloween-like mood; “horror” more strongly suggests that fear, dread, danger, or disturbing material is central to the experience. The terms overlap, though, and there is no official line between them—use them as a spectrum, not strict genre labels.
What makes a game spooky rather than horror?
In ordinary usage, spooky often describes atmosphere: ghosts, uncanny settings, Halloween imagery, or a light sense of unease. That mood can be playful, cute, cozy, or only mildly unsettling. A spooky game may aim to create seasonal atmosphere without making fear the main activity.

Horror more strongly signals that the game is built around frightening the player—through fear, dread, danger, or disturbing material. It does not require one particular mechanic: a game can create tension through its story, sound, sensory cues, threats, or the player’s vulnerability. The distinction is useful, but it is not a standardized genre rule. Mon River Games’ comparison of “spooky” and “scary” games reflects informal usage, while horror-game scholarship examines how design can evoke fear and dread.

A game’s tone and its gameplay can pull in different directions. Agata Waszkiewicz’s 2024 study describes “dark cozy games”: titles that bring visual softness and some sense of safety to horror or Gothic elements. She discusses Cult of the Lamb, Dredge, and Oxenfree as examples of this hybridity. They illustrate the range rather than guaranteeing that every player will find them equally cozy or frightening. Waszkiewicz’s article in Replay: The Polish Journal of Game Studies summarizes cozy games as typically combining visual softness with relaxing gameplay, then examines how those expectations can meet darker material.

- Amazon Exclusive - 2 sided poster included in every game!
- Grace Ashcroft, an FBI intelligence analyst who is introverted and easily scared, representing a new type of character for the Resident Evil series. Grace will experience horror from the same perspective as the player as she learns to overcome her fears throughout the course of the story.
- For the first time ever in Resident Evil history, players will be able to freely switch between both first- and third-person perspectives throughout the game.
- An Anniversary to Remember: With March 2026 marking the Resident Evil series’ 30-year anniversary, Resident Evil Requiem marks its own milestone in the franchise.
- Pre-orders for Resident Evil Requiem are now open, with the bonus of Grace’s costume: Apocalypse. Please note that the picture weapon does not come with the costume, but it can be obtained in-game.
Nor does cartoon art automatically mean “spooky but not horror,” or realism automatically mean horror. Presentation is one clue; sound, mechanics, threats, narrative, and intensity also shape how a game feels. The Game Studies analysis of Slender: The Eight Pages, for example, considers how simple design and sensory cues can produce dread. How to judge how scary a game may feel
When a store page or recommendation uses a broad label, look beyond the genre tag. These questions can help you decide whether a game fits your preferred level of intensity:
Rank #2
- A dark, enthralling 4-5 hour narrative to keep you hooked and guessing until the end. Gorgeous visuals as you traverse numerous and diverse environments, presented with a cinematic, film-like aesthetic. Ranged and melee combat with upgradeable weapons to help you survive your nightmarish journey.
- A stellar voice cast, starring Valerie Rose Lohman (What Remains of Edith Finch, Wolfenstein: Youngblood), Jonah Scott (Dying Light 2: Stay Human, Date Everything), and Aleks Le (Persona 3: Reload, Marvel Rivals, Ghost of Yotei).
- A beautifully dynamic and haunting soundtrack composed and performed by Jacob Noska, and Jonah Henthorne: members of the band Auric Echoes.
- The puzzles you encounter are more than your standard key hunt. Project Songbird rewards those with an eye for detail, making each puzzle a challenge of creativity and wits.
- The combat of Project Songbird offers a variety of approaches inspired by the classics of the survival horror genre. Melee and gunplay is slow and weighty, and ammo is incredibly scarce. However, combat isn't your only option, as you have a multitude of tools at your disposal to aid in sneaking past any creatures that wish to do you harm.
- Emotional intensity: Is the aim an eerie backdrop, or sustained fear and dread?
- Threat and vulnerability: Is danger mostly decorative, or does the game put the player under pressure?
- Presentation: Is the look playful or soft, or uncanny and oppressive? Treat art style as one clue, not a guarantee.
- Content: Check for violence, gore, disturbing imagery, or other material you want to avoid.
- Your circumstances: Age, personal sensitivities, platform, and region can all affect what makes a game suitable.
Spooky does not mean suitable for every age
A cute title or Halloween look does not establish age suitability. Parent Zone notes that horror games can include cartoon violence as well as more realistic disturbing material, and that appealing characters or titles can make suitability difficult to judge. Its 2022 guide is useful for thinking about content, but its rating examples should not be treated as current or universal labels. See Parent Zone’s horror games guide.

Check the current rating and content descriptors for the specific game, edition, and region you intend to use. The ESRB says physical boxed-game ratings are based on the consensus of at least three specially trained raters, while digitally delivered games and apps use the International Age Rating Coalition (IARC) process. Rating systems and procedures depend on jurisdiction and delivery method. The ESRB’s FAQ explains its rating process.

- Cronos: The New Dawn is a brutal third-person survival horror where you fight for the future by salvaging the past. Burn monsters before they merge. Extract souls from the living. Adapt or die.
- Set in a grim world where Eastern European brutalism meets retro-futurist technology, Cronos: The New Dawn lets you experience a gripping story that straddles the line between past and future.
- The enemies you’ll encounter are nightmarish creatures, born from the remnants of humanity – defeating them will require you to make full use of your arsenal.
- The creatures you kill won’t stay dead for long. Fallen enemies can be absorbed by others - through a grotesque process called Merging - to become faster, tougher, and far deadlier.
- This physical edition of Cronos: The New Dawn comes with bonus in-game content and a set of collectible stickers.
Classification decisions can also turn on content beyond what a genre label suggests. On 14 August 2026, the Australian Classification Board said Halloween: The Game received Refused Classification (RC) because illicit drug use was linked to a gameplay advantage. In Australia, the Board said RC material cannot be sold, hired, advertised, or legally imported. That decision concerns this particular game and jurisdiction; it is not a general rule about spooky or horror games. Read the Australian Classification Board’s statement.
