Splashtop Shield pairs antivirus with a family remote-help feature, but PCMag reviewer Neil J. Rubenking’s August 23, 2026 tests found weaknesses that make it hard to recommend as a family’s primary protection. He reported a 7.8/10 score in his local malware test, no detections among hand-modified samples, and no blocking of tested malware-hosting URLs before downloads began. The remote-support idea is useful, but the review’s evidence points to waiting for more maturity and broader testing.
What Splashtop Shield combines
Shield is an antivirus product with centralized family management and remote computer support. A designated family manager, called the Guardian, uses an online console to manage settings and can help relatives troubleshoot their computers remotely. That makes it more than a way to check protection settings from afar: an approved session gives the Guardian broad control of the other computer.

PCMag’s August 23, 2026 review described three annual plans: Individual at $36 for two computers, Family Lite at $60 for up to five devices, and Family at $99 for 10 devices. These are prices reported in that review, not confirmed current vendor prices; check Splashtop’s current offer before subscribing.
What the protection tests found
All performance figures below come from Rubenking’s own tests and sample sets, as reported in PCMag on August 23, 2026. They are not independent antivirus-lab scores, a certification, or a guarantee of results on other computers.

The distinction in the download test matters: an 86% result does not mean Shield prevented users from visiting the tested sites. Rubenking reported that the files were removed after the downloads started, while none of the malware-hosting URLs was blocked. The phishing result was stronger in this review, but it does not erase the weaknesses found in the malware tests.
How family remote help works—and what access it allows
- The Guardian manages settings through Shield’s online console.
- The family member installs Splashtop Streamer and the Shield antivirus application on the computer needing help.
- The Guardian starts a remote-help session. The family member must approve the session, can see what is happening, and can end it.
- After approval, the Guardian can operate the computer broadly: open Shield, inspect logs and quarantined items, run scans, access documents, launch other applications, and reboot the system.
Consent is a meaningful control, but it does not make the session narrow in scope. Someone approving a session should understand that the Guardian can reach files and applications beyond the antivirus interface. The Guardian’s computer also needs a separate Splashtop Remote Help client, which the review says is installed on first use.

Rubenking initially could not get the feature working in a virtual machine, then connected successfully to a support contact’s laptop after working with Splashtop support. That account does not establish a general compatibility problem.
Should families buy it now?
For families whose main priority is dependable malware protection, the review gives a reason to wait. Rubenking advised holding off while the new product matures, and noted that the major antivirus labs he follows had not tested Shield at the time of publication. The test results are concerning, but they represent one reviewer’s methods and samples—not a universal measure of protection.

For remote assistance, the feature has a clear use case: a relative can approve a session and let a trusted Guardian handle settings or troubleshoot the machine without being physically present. PCMag also identifies Sophos Home Premium as a product that lets a user manage antivirus protection remotely for up to 10 household members. Its description of Shield’s distinction is that it adds full remote computer control; the review does not establish a head-to-head comparison of the products’ protection.
Splashtop co-founder Mark Lee told Rubenking that “making that entire remote experience secure has also been a major undertaking for us.” That statement, quoted in PCMag’s August 23, 2026 review, speaks to the complexity of remote support; it is not independent evidence of Shield’s protection performance.
