What speech-to-text can—and cannot—do
Voice typing treats speech as an input method: you speak, the software transcribes, and you work with the resulting text. That can make a draft or a short passage easier to enter when typing feels cumbersome. Transcription is not the same as hands-free editing, however. A tool may produce text without letting you revise, format, or insert it by voice; check its actual workflow before relying on it for those tasks.

Check microphone access and processing before you dictate
Microphone access is the basic requirement established for Google Docs voice typing. That does not mean you need to buy a separate microphone: the documentation requires microphone access, not dedicated external hardware. If you plan to dictate sensitive material, check the current product’s microphone permissions and speech-processing settings first.
Processing differs by product. Google says the browser controls its voice-typing speech-to-text service and how speech is processed before text reaches Docs or Slides. Microsoft identifies online speech recognition for Windows voice typing. These statements do not establish that either service is local, retains no audio, or is suitable for every sensitive use. Consult the current privacy and settings information for the product you intend to use.

Decide whether dictation fits the task
- Try it for: entering a draft or passage when speaking feels easier than typing, provided the text can be reviewed where it appears.
- Check first for: a need to dictate directly into a particular app, edit by voice, control formatting, or work offline. The options above do not all establish those capabilities.
- Review the result: treat the transcription as editable text, not a verified record. The cited documentation does not establish an accuracy rate or guarantee error-free output.
