Spectra Blocks is a separate plugin that adds layouts, design tools, and other features to WordPress’s native Block Editor. Its core plugin and listed blocks are free, but its optional AI tools require a separate plugin, a ZipWP account, and credits. For Spectra Legacy users, moving is optional—and rebuilding pages involves more than switching plugins.
What Spectra Blocks does
Spectra Blocks is Brainstorm Force’s Block Editor plugin, built using modern WordPress core-block APIs. It adds layout and content blocks, styling extensions for core blocks, a design library, Global Styles, popups, and animations. The intended workflow stays inside the native editor rather than moving page construction into a separate builder.

That makes it a potential fit for people who want more layout and styling options while continuing to work in WordPress’s Block Editor. Whether its blocks and controls cover a particular site’s needs is a workflow question; the available evidence does not establish a controlled comparison against other builders.
Are Spectra Blocks blocks “almost the same as Gutenberg blocks”?
It extends the native Block Editor, but it is not simply a collection of core WordPress blocks under another name. Spectra adds its own blocks and controls, alongside extensions that affect core blocks. The editor remains familiar in broad terms, while specific block settings and behavior can differ. Anyone who depends on a particular control—such as image resizing or alignment—should verify that exact workflow before rebuilding important pages.

What is free, and what requires AI access?
The WordPress.org listing says the core plugin, its blocks, and Extensions are free and do not require an account. AI-assisted page or section generation, copy rewriting, and HTML-to-block conversion are a separate workflow provided through the free Zip AI plugin. Using those features requires a ZipWP account and credits, and AI requests are processed by ZipWP. Spectra Blocks Pro users still need that account and credits for AI features; “free plugin” does not mean unlimited or account-free AI use.
Compatibility and technical requirements
The WordPress.org listing observed on October 7, 2026 reports WordPress 6.6 or later and PHP 8.1 or later, and says the listed release was tested through WordPress 7.1. These are listing values as of that date, not a guarantee for every later release or site configuration. Check the current listing and your hosting environment before installing or updating.

The listing names Astra, Spectra One, Kadence, GeneratePress, Blocksy, Neve, and Flatsome among themes Spectra Blocks works well with. It also names WooCommerce, SureCart, Gravity Forms, Fluent Forms, LearnDash, Tutor LMS, Yoast SEO, The Events Calendar, GiveWP, PrestoPlayer, SureMembers, MemberPress, and Easy Digital Downloads among compatible plugins, and says the plugin was tested for WPML compatibility. These are vendor listing claims, not independent compatibility tests across every theme, plugin version, or site setup.

Spectra Blocks is a new, separate plugin—not just a renamed Spectra Legacy update. Legacy is the original plugin, previously published as “Ultimate Addons for Gutenberg.” The WordPress.org listing says Legacy continues to receive maintenance updates, compatibility fixes, and security patches; existing users are not required to move.
Rank #3
| Consideration | Spectra Blocks | Spectra Legacy |
|---|---|---|
| Relationship | Separate newer plugin built on modern WordPress core-block APIs. | Original plugin, formerly called Ultimate Addons for Gutenberg. |
| Existing pages | Use Blocks for pages you build with its blocks; rebuilding is a separate task. | Existing Legacy pages remain in place while Legacy stays active. |
| Global settings | Has its own Global Styles and settings. | Global Colors, Typography, and default block settings are not shared with Blocks. |
| Ongoing support | Its own feature set and release track. | The listing says it continues to receive maintenance updates, compatibility fixes, and security patches. |
Running both plugins side by side is described as a normal transition approach: keep existing Legacy pages working, and use Blocks for new pages or rebuilt sections. Rebuilding a page does not change its URL. However, custom CSS targeting Legacy block classes may need updating for rebuilt sections, and the two plugins’ global colors, typography, and default block settings do not carry over automatically.
How to approach a gradual move from Legacy
- Keep Legacy active while its blocks are used. Existing Legacy pages remain dependent on Legacy content and settings; do not deactivate it merely because Blocks is installed.
- Install and evaluate Blocks on a new page or a limited rebuild. Check that the blocks and controls you need are available and behave as expected in your theme and site setup.
- Recreate design settings where needed. Plan to configure Global Colors, Typography, and default block settings separately rather than expecting Legacy settings to appear in Blocks.
- Review custom CSS on rebuilt sections. CSS written against Legacy block classes may need changes when those sections are rebuilt with Blocks.
- Deactivate Legacy only when no pages still use Legacy blocks. The listing’s guidance is to keep it active until that condition is met.
Performance: what the listing does and does not establish
The official plugin description says Spectra Blocks loads only the CSS a page needs and that its use of core WordPress block APIs keeps overhead minimal. The same description qualifies that actual performance depends on the host, theme, and site setup. This is a vendor claim, not an independently measured speed result; the available evidence does not establish a benchmark advantage over another plugin or a speed improvement on a particular site.

On October 7, 2026, the WordPress.org listing showed version 1.0.7, more than 40,000 active installations, and a 4.5-out-of-5 rating from 30 ratings: 25 five-star, one four-star, one three-star, one two-star, and two one-star ratings. These are dated platform figures and can change. They offer context about adoption and user sentiment, but a small rating count cannot predict whether the plugin fits an individual workflow.
Recommended Free Tools
The listing includes individual comments with mixed experiences: one user praises native-editor functionality and starter templates, another says Blocks feels less straightforward than Legacy and mentions difficulty resizing and centering images, and another praises the product and support. These are anecdotes, not a representative usability study. The image-control complaint is a useful reminder to check the editing tasks you rely on rather than assuming all workflows carry over unchanged.
Best Value
Who should consider it?
- Consider it if you want additional layouts, blocks, and styling options while staying in the native Block Editor, and your WordPress and PHP versions meet the current listing’s requirements.
- Try it on a limited page first if your site relies on precise image controls, custom CSS, or tightly tuned Legacy global settings.
- Account for the extra dependency if AI generation or rewriting is central to your decision: those features use Zip AI and require a ZipWP account and credits.
- Do not migrate solely for a speed promise. The plugin description’s CSS and overhead statement is not an independent performance benchmark.
Verdict: Spectra Blocks is a plausible option for Block Editor users who want more design components without adopting a separate builder. Its clearest practical advantage is that the workflow remains in WordPress’s native editor; its main caveats are the separate AI account-and-credit requirement and the need for Legacy users to manage settings and custom CSS during a gradual rebuild. The listing’s claims and ratings are useful starting points, not a substitute for checking the plugin against the site’s actual requirements.
