For ordinary audio setups, speaker wire and speaker cable usually mean the same thing: the insulated conductors connecting an amplifier or receiver to passive speakers. There is no strict, industry-wide naming boundary. What matters when choosing one is the run length, speaker impedance, conductor size and the terminals on your equipment.
What do “speaker wire” and “speaker cable” mean?
Both terms commonly describe the speaker-level connection from an amplifier output to passive speaker terminals. “Cable” may emphasize the complete insulated assembly, while “wire” is common in consumer product listings and support materials. The terms do not, by themselves, indicate different electrical jobs.
These are not the low-level connections used for signals such as a guitar’s output to an amplifier. Speaker cable carries the amplifier’s output to the speaker and typically has two substantial conductors.
How to choose a suitable speaker-wire size
Choose conductor size based on the length of each run and the speaker’s nominal impedance. AWG numbers run in the opposite direction to thickness: a lower number means a thicker conductor. Longer runs and lower-impedance speakers generally make thicker wire more appropriate, because cable resistance depends on conductor length and cross-sectional area.

Sony says 12–16 AWG is commonly used to connect speakers to a stereo system or A/V receiver, and that 16 AWG is generally sufficient for short runs. These are general recommendations, not a guarantee for every combination of equipment and distance. Teufel lists 1.5–4 mm² as a typical speaker-cable conductor cross-section; that metric range is another way manufacturers describe conductor size.
Published distance tables vary, so do not treat one maker’s maximum as a universal cutoff. For example, Klipsch’s table lists 16 AWG for runs up to 48 feet with 8-ohm speakers and up to 24 feet with 4-ohm speakers. Those are Klipsch’s recommendations, not universal limits. Check your speaker and amplifier documentation when the run is long or the load is low.

Speaker cable is not instrument cable
Do not substitute an instrument cable for speaker wire. Speaker cable carries the amplifier’s stronger output to a speaker and typically uses two substantial conductors. Instrument cable carries a weaker signal and uses shielding. The constructions serve different jobs; use the cable type specified for the connection.
Choose a connection your equipment accepts
Bare wire is a common way to connect speaker cable. Banana plugs or spade plugs may make installation and removal easier, but only use them if the amplifier and speaker terminals accept that connector. Properly fitted plugs can also help keep stray wire strands from touching neighboring terminals. Some compact home-theater systems use non-standard plug-in connections, so check the equipment documentation before buying generic wire or plugs.

What matters more than premium cable claims?
For an ordinary speaker connection, prioritize suitable conductor resistance, gauge, run length and reliable termination. Cambridge Audio identifies resistance as the most important cable property in this context and notes that it depends on length and conductor cross-sectional area. Its guidance recommends keeping left and right cable lengths equal.
Claims about additional cable features improving sound are not settled in the reviewed guidance. A higher price, elaborate jacket or marketing claim alone does not establish a sound-quality improvement. Choose cable that fits the electrical requirements and connection method of your setup.

A practical buying checklist
- Measure the route for each speaker, allowing enough length for placement without unnecessary excess.
- Check the speaker’s nominal impedance and consult the amplifier, receiver or speaker documentation for cable guidance.
- Choose an appropriate conductor gauge or cross-sectional area for the load and run; do not assume one gauge suits every installation.
- Confirm whether your terminals accept bare wire, banana plugs, spades or a proprietary connector.
- For fixed installations, prioritize electrical suitability and secure connections over cosmetic features or unsupported performance claims.
