Demonstrations over Spain’s housing crisis were scheduled for 3 October 2026 in more than 50 cities, following Parliament’s rejection of two proposed tenant-protection decrees the day before. The reported turnout had not been established when the demonstrations were announced.
What prompted the demonstrations?
The immediate catalyst was the eviction of 87-year-old Madrid tenant Maricarmen Abascal on 23 September 2026. EFE reported that she had lived in the apartment for 70 years under a rent-control lease. The eviction became a vivid example of renter insecurity, but the protests and the parliamentary dispute addressed broader concerns about housing affordability and tenant protections.
After the public backlash, the real estate company agreed to let Abascal return to the apartment, the Associated Press reported. In a video recorded from a hospital bed after the eviction, Abascal said: “I haven’t managed to defend my home, but I have fought so that others can learn to fight for what’s theirs.”
The Tenants’ Union coordinated the 3 October demonstrations, according to Euronews. In a statement reported by Euronews, the union said: “There is an irreparable disconnect between what the people want and what the parties vote for.”

What did Parliament reject?
On 2 October, Congress rejected two government decrees intended to strengthen protections for tenants. Reporting described measures including automatic renewal of rental contracts at expiry and restrictions on evicting vulnerable tenants. These were proposals: the decrees did not pass, so the proposed protections did not become law through this vote.
The proposals addressed tenants’ security in their homes. They should not be confused with measures to increase the supply of homes: they have different mechanisms, and the reported information does not establish what effects either decree would have had if enacted.

What do the latest housing figures measure?
Several indicators point to pressure, but they describe different things. Official purchase-price data, private rental listings and a survey about difficulty finding housing are not interchangeable measures of one housing “shortage.”

Why is housing difficult to find in some parts of Spain?
The shortage is geographically concentrated, not uniform across the country. Euronews highlights a mismatch between where homes are available and where demand is strongest: housing in a low-demand municipality does not necessarily meet the need in Madrid, Barcelona, Málaga or Palma.

The OECD’s 2025 survey describes several obstacles to adding homes in high-demand areas:
- Limited buildable land where demand is strongest.
- Slow and uncertain planning approvals.
- Construction productivity and labour constraints, alongside higher costs.
- Tight lending and weak incentives to build affordable housing.
These reported constraints help explain why the issue cannot be reduced to a single cause, group or policy. The available figures show price pressure and housing-access difficulties, but do not establish that one factor alone produced them.

What is known about the demonstrations’ scale?
The Tenants’ Union’s call covered more than 50 cities, but that is a count of planned locations, not a verified attendance total. At the time the demonstrations were announced, final turnout figures by city—and a reliable total for all marches—were not established. The scheduled events indicate the geographic reach of the call, not how many people ultimately took part.
