Reuters reported on October 6, 2026, citing a Financial Times report, that the proposed package would include about $10 billion in bank loans and $30 billion in investment-grade debt. A Bloomberg report carried by The Business Times the next day said the talks were still early and could end without a deal.
What SpaceX is reportedly seeking
The reported target is $40 billion, with proceeds intended to fund Nvidia AI chips for data-center infrastructure. According to Reuters, summarizing the Financial Times, the proposed financing would be divided between bank loans and investment-grade debt:

| Reported component | Amount | What is established |
|---|---|---|
| Bank loans | About $10 billion | A reported target, not a confirmed loan commitment. |
| Investment-grade debt | About $30 billion | A reported target; final terms and investors have not been established. |
Reuters said the transaction was expected to close in 2027. That timing, like the financing mix, comes from the reported proposal rather than a public agreement. The coverage does not identify the Nvidia chip models, quantities, prices, delivery schedule, interest rate, collateral, or debt covenants.

Apollo is reported to lead
The Financial Times report cited by Reuters said Apollo was expected to lead the financing and help place debt with investors. Reuters also reported that PIMCO was among a small group of lenders in talks. Bloomberg’s account, carried by The Business Times on October 7, described PIMCO as one of the managers looking at the deal. Neither account establishes that PIMCO or other prospective participants have committed money.

The discussions are not a completed deal
Bloomberg’s report said the discussions were at an early stage and might not result in a transaction. Reuters said SpaceX, Apollo, and Nvidia had not immediately responded to its requests for comment, while PIMCO declined to comment. The reporting therefore does not amount to confirmation by any of those companies, nor does it establish that the proposed terms remain unchanged.
Why the $40 billion figure needs context
The proposed financing would be a large funding effort for AI chips, but it should not be confused with broader estimates or initiatives in the AI infrastructure market. Reuters relayed Morgan Stanley’s estimate that the sector would need $1.5 trillion in external financing by 2028; that estimate covers AI infrastructure broadly, not SpaceX specifically.

Separately, Nvidia announced a collaboration with Apollo, BlackRock, Blackstone, Brookfield, Goldman Sachs, and KKR aimed at assembling more than $500 billion in financing for AI infrastructure. Axios reported the announcement on August 10, 2026. That broad financing ambition is not a commitment to fund SpaceX’s reported purchase. In the context of that initiative, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said it would “help customers access scarce compute at scale”; the statement was not about the reported SpaceX financing.

What is known about SpaceX’s chip plans
Reuters reported that Elon Musk had said SpaceX planned to use Nvidia hardware exclusively for its data centers. That reported plan does not confirm a particular order or show that the proposed $40 billion would buy any specified number of chips.

The Business Times’ account of Bloomberg also discussed Musk’s reported statements about xAI’s Colossus 2 cluster: 110,000 Nvidia GB200 chips and 440,000 GB300s, with additional GB300s expected to become operational in the weeks and months following the report’s October 7, 2026 publication. Those figures concern xAI, not SpaceX’s proposed purchase. Reuters separately reported Musk’s forecast that Colossus 2 could more than double its Nvidia chip count by December; that forecast is not evidence of SpaceX transaction quantities.
What remains undisclosed
- Which Nvidia chip models SpaceX would buy, and how many.
- The purchase price, delivery schedule, and financing protections.
- The final lenders or investors, and whether any have committed capital.
- Whether the proposed financing will close, or whether its terms or timing will change.
Until definitive terms or company confirmation are made public, the $40 billion figure and proposed structure should be treated as reported financing discussions—not a completed loan, bond sale, or chip order.
