SpaceX is ahead on recent momentum, but it has not won the broader space race. On September 28, 2026, Starship reached orbit and deployed advanced Starlink satellites before ending its flight early and splashing down. That is a major milestone, not proof of routine full-system reuse.
Blue Origin has already reached orbit with New Glenn and recovered its first stage, yet a May 2026 hot-fire anomaly damaged launch infrastructure. Blue Origin says it is rebuilding and targeting a return by the end of 2026. NASA’s Artemis plans still involve both companies, so the long-term contest remains open.
What “winning” means in Space Race 2.0
There is no single fair scoreboard. SpaceX and Blue Origin are flying different vehicles, serving different customers and reaching different stages of development. A useful comparison separates four questions:
- Who has the newest orbital milestone?
- Who has demonstrated recovery and reuse?
- Whose next-generation systems are closer to dependable operations?
- Who can meet NASA’s lunar requirements?
No consistent dataset in the available records supports a trustworthy launch-total, win-percentage, price-per-launch or cost-per-kilogram ranking.

SpaceX’s latest lead: Starship reaches orbit
What happened on September 28, 2026
Associated Press reporting on Starship Flight 14 says the vehicle reached orbit and released advanced Starlink satellites. The mission ended earlier than planned, and the spacecraft splashed down in the Pacific.
That result moves Starship beyond another development hurdle: it demonstrated orbital ascent and payload deployment in one flight. It did not demonstrate a routine, fully reusable transportation service. The flight’s early termination means the result should be treated as a consequential test milestone rather than an operational finish.
What remains unproven
- Regular launch cadence with the complete vehicle.
- Repeatable recovery of both stages under operational conditions.
- On-orbit propellant transfer at the scale required for lunar missions.
- A schedule that satisfies NASA’s human-landing-system milestones.
Blue Origin’s record: a recovered New Glenn booster, followed by a setback
New Glenn’s demonstrated milestone
Blue Origin’s New Glenn mission record states that its second mission, on November 13, 2025, deployed NASA’s twin ESCAPADE spacecraft and landed the reusable first stage on the Jacklyn recovery vessel.

The May 28, 2026 hot-fire anomaly
Blue Origin says a New Glenn hot-fire anomaly damaged the lightning tower, transporter-erector and hydraulic cylinders. The company reports that recovery and debris removal are complete and that reconstruction has begun, with a return-to-flight target by the end of 2026.
That date is a company target, not a completed launch. The incident temporarily shifts Blue Origin’s near-term story from flight cadence to infrastructure repair and redesign.

Additional second-stage testing
NASA announced in July 2026 that Blue Origin plans to conduct New Glenn second-stage hot-fire testing at Stennis Space Center’s B-2 stand, targeted to begin in fall 2026. NASA describes New Glenn as a launch vehicle for future lunar missions; the Stennis test is preparation, not evidence that those missions have flown.
Side-by-side: what the current evidence shows
| Question | SpaceX | Blue Origin | Current reading |
|---|---|---|---|
| Newest headline milestone | Starship reached orbit, deployed satellites and splashed down early on September 28, 2026. | New Glenn’s second mission reached orbit and recovered its first stage in November 2025. | SpaceX has the newer milestone; Blue Origin has a demonstrated booster landing. |
| Reuse demonstrated | Starship is designed for full reuse, but the September flight did not establish routine full-system reuse. | First-stage recovery has been demonstrated; upper-stage reuse is not claimed in the mission record. | Compare intended architecture with hardware actually recovered. |
| Near-term constraint | Orbital propellant transfer, flight cadence and NASA schedule progress remain major challenges. | Pad reconstruction and a revised integration and launch approach follow the May anomaly. | Both programs face material technical and infrastructure risk. |
| NASA lunar role | Starship is one of NASA’s human-landing-system providers. | Blue Moon is the other provider, while New Glenn is planned for lunar launches. | NASA has not declared an early winner. |
How Artemis III could change the race
NASA’s planned low-Earth-orbit test campaign
NASA’s July 15, 2026 Artemis III explanation describes a low-Earth-orbit test campaign rather than an immediate surface landing. Commercial rockets would carry lander test articles, while Orion and its crew would launch on the Space Launch System. NASA says the campaign will include rendezvous and docking tests involving both providers’ systems.
NASA says SpaceX plans to use Starship Version 3 as the basis for its future human-landing-system test, while Blue Origin plans to test its Blue Moon crew cabin. NASA Human Landing System Program manager Steve Creech summarized the split: Each human landing system provider has taken a different approach to the Artemis III mission.

The schedule is unsettled
NASA’s Office of Inspector General reports that lander-development challenges will delay planned Artemis dates. The finding is an oversight assessment, not a prediction of a specific launch day.
The Government Accountability Office’s 2026 assessment highlights SpaceX’s propellant-transfer and schedule challenges, Blue Origin’s May 2026 New Glenn test explosion and pad redesign, and risks connected with cryogenic storage and transfer. NASA plans and company targets should therefore be read as planned milestones until hardware and missions complete them.

SpaceX’s Starship approach
NASA oversight documents describe a Starship human-landing-system architecture that requires multiple Starship vehicles to transfer propellant in low-Earth orbit before a lunar mission. The complexity is not just launching a lander: it includes producing, storing and transferring cryogenic propellant across a chain of flights.

Blue Origin’s Blue Moon approach
Blue Origin’s planned Blue Moon Artemis V architecture uses a transporter and refuelers to aggregate propellant for the lunar lander. That reduces the comparison to more than vehicle size or launch power; the logistics of moving and preserving cryogenic fuel are central to the design.
The shared risk
GAO identifies cryogenic fuel management and transfer as important risks. Both companies must show that their propellant systems can operate reliably, on schedule and in the sequence required for crewed lunar missions.
What would change the verdict
Evidence that would strengthen SpaceX’s lead
- Repeated Starship orbital missions with predictable outcomes.
- Demonstrated recovery and reuse of the complete system, not only a successful ascent.
- Operational-scale propellant transfer in orbit.
- Successful NASA-required lander tests using the planned Starship configuration.
Evidence that would move Blue Origin ahead
- A safe New Glenn return to flight after the May 2026 anomaly.
- A sustained launch cadence rather than a single recovered booster.
- Successful second-stage hot-fire and integrated vehicle testing.
- Progress from Blue Moon design and refueling demonstrations to NASA-accepted lunar-system milestones.
The fairest answer in 2026
SpaceX is winning the momentum contest: Starship’s September orbital flight is the most recent and visible breakthrough. Blue Origin still owns an important demonstrated result—New Glenn reached orbit and recovered its first stage—and its setback does not erase that achievement.
The broader race remains undecided because neither company has yet shown a routine, end-to-end lunar transportation system. Artemis testing, repeat flights, reliable propellant operations and sustained launch cadence—not one spectacular mission—will determine who ultimately leads.
