That announcement is not proof that a seat is still available at that price. Orbital trips are a different, longer kind of journey, and the sources available here do not establish a reliable public ticket price for them. The environmental cost is harder to reduce to one number: emissions and atmospheric effects depend on the vehicle, propellant, altitude, flight rate and how impacts are counted.
What does a space-tourism ticket buy?
“Space tourism” covers more than one kind of trip. An academic review describes it as including brief suborbital flights, longer orbital journeys in capsules or space hotels, and travel beyond Earth orbit. These are not interchangeable services: a brief suborbital flight and a longer orbital trip differ in destination and duration, so a single price range would obscure the distinction.

The 2025 Form 10-K records Virgin Galactic’s earlier $450,000 and $600,000 base prices and says a newer tranche reopened at $750,000 per seat. Those figures document a company price history, not a guarantee that the same fare can be booked now. Virgin Galactic’s March 30, 2026 announcement also forecast commercial operations with its first new SpaceShip in the fourth quarter of 2026; that is a company forecast, not a confirmed operating date. Its Q2 2026 release characterizes plans and timelines as forward-looking statements.

What is known about the environmental impact?
There is no single well-established environmental figure here that can be applied to every tourist flight. Results depend on the vehicle and propulsion system, the propellant used, where emissions and other effects occur, how often flights take place, and what the analysis counts. A comparison per passenger-mile, for example, is not automatically comparable to a full accounting of a launch’s atmospheric effects.
A widely repeated emissions comparison needs context
A 2025 Syz Group overview repeats a comparison of approximately 12 kg of CO2 per Virgin Galactic passenger-mile against approximately 0.2 kg per commercial-aircraft passenger-mile, attributing the figures to the Financial Times. This is a secondary-source comparison; its methodology and accounting boundary are not established in the overview described here. Treat it as a reported estimate, not a universal or directly verified measure of the climate impact of space tourism or of every flight.

The same overview reports a warning about water vapour at altitude and possible effects on ozone and heat-trapping clouds, attributing it to atmospheric chemist Eloise Marais of University College London. Because this is the overview’s wording rather than a verified transcript or primary study, it should not be presented as a direct quotation. It does illustrate why carbon dioxide alone may not capture all relevant atmospheric effects.

An academic review models possible future activity as well as defining the range of trips called space tourism. Any launch-rate or cumulative-impact figures in such scenarios are projections based on assumptions, not observations of an established future tourism industry.

The FAA’s environmental review documents address specified launch proposals and locations. A site-specific review can inform the environmental effects of the operations and place it assesses; it is not a sector-wide climate certification and cannot establish that every launch system or tourist flight has the same effects.
