Space Engineers system requirements at a glance
Keen Software House’s current requirements page is the primary specification. Use the minimum column to determine whether the game should install and launch on a qualifying system, and the recommended column as the more comfortable target for demanding play.

Every minimum row matters. A computer with enough RAM but an older graphics card, for example, is not fully inside the published minimum. “Or higher” refers to a comparable or faster part in the same general class; model names and clock speed should be checked together rather than treated as interchangeable.

Can my PC run Space Engineers?
Compare your machine against these six checks. If all six minimum requirements pass, your system meets Keen’s published floor. If one fails, that component is the first place to investigate before buying or installing the game.
1. Check the operating system
The stated baseline is 64-bit Windows 10. A 32-bit installation does not satisfy it, even if the processor is powerful enough. Open Settings → System → About and check both the Windows edition and the “System type” entry. The latter should identify a 64-bit operating system.

Do not assume that an unlisted operating system, compatibility layer, or console edition follows the same thresholds without checking its own platform documentation.
2. Compare the processor
The minimum reference is an Intel Core i5-7600K running at 3.80 GHz or higher, or an AMD equivalent. The recommended reference is a quad-core Intel Core i7 at 4.5 GHz or higher, or an AMD equivalent.
Find the exact CPU model in Settings → System → About or in Task Manager’s Performance → CPU view. Compare the model class, core count, and rated speed. A newer processor can outperform an older one at a lower clock, so the named examples are reference points, not a complete list of acceptable CPUs. If your CPU is below the minimum class or speed, processor performance is the relevant upgrade question.

3. Check memory (RAM)
Space Engineers requires 8 GB of RAM at minimum and 16 GB is the recommended amount. In Task Manager, open Performance → Memory to see installed capacity.
Less than 8 GB is below the stated floor. A system with exactly 8 GB meets the minimum specification but leaves less headroom for Windows and other running programs than a 16 GB system. Close unnecessary applications when testing a borderline machine; doing so cannot turn less than 8 GB into a compliant configuration, but it can reduce avoidable memory pressure.
4. Identify the graphics card
The minimum graphics references are a GeForce GTX 750 Ti or Radeon R9 270X. The recommended references are a GeForce GTX 1070 or Radeon RX Vega 56. Check the GPU model in Task Manager → Performance → GPU or in Settings → System → Display → Advanced display.
Integrated graphics should not be assumed to match a named discrete card. If graphics capability is the only shortfall, compare a compatible graphics-card upgrade first. Confirm power supply capacity, case clearance, and the required display outputs for your particular PC before purchasing; the published game requirements do not establish those hardware-fit details.
5. Verify DirectX 11
The requirements specify DirectX 11. Press Windows key + R, enter dxdiag, and review the DirectX version shown by the diagnostic tool. The graphics driver must also expose the required feature support. DirectX version alone does not make an otherwise underpowered GPU meet the minimum.

6. Confirm free storage
Keen lists 35 GB of free HDD space for both tiers. Check available capacity in File Explorer → This PC, and leave more room than the bare number if Windows or other applications also need space. The requirement is free capacity, not the total size printed on the drive.
Why Steam may show different minimum wording
Steam’s listing uses slightly different language for the minimum processor and graphics entries: it says an Intel i5 at 3.0 GHz or higher and names a GeForce 750 or Radeon R9 270X, while still listing 8 GB of RAM, DirectX 11, and 35 GB of storage.
When the two pages appear to disagree, use Keen Software House’s current requirements page as the primary specification and treat the Steam text as a platform listing. The difference explains why searches may return both “i5 3.0 GHz/GeForce 750” and “i5-7600K 3.80 GHz/GTX 750 Ti” wording. It is not a reason to ignore the stricter current reference when assessing an older PC.
Steam identifies the PC version’s release date as 28 February 2019. That date is useful for identifying the listing, but it does not replace the current hardware guidance.

- Open Settings → System → About and record the Windows edition, system type, processor model, and installed RAM.
- Open Task Manager → Performance and record the CPU’s model and the exact GPU model shown under GPU.
- Run
dxdiagand confirm the DirectX version reported by Windows. - Open File Explorer → This PC and verify that at least 35 GB is free on the drive where you plan to install the game.
- Compare each recorded value with the minimum column. Do not mark the PC as compliant until every row passes.
If you are checking a laptop, record the discrete GPU rather than assuming the integrated adapter is used. A laptop can also switch between adapters depending on its power profile, so confirm which GPU the game is configured to use after installation.

Keen says a Steam or Xbox account and an internet connection are required to install Space Engineers. The installation requirement is separate from ongoing play: after installation, single-player does not require an internet connection.

That figure is a recommendation for the connection, not a frame-rate or hardware guarantee. Multiplayer results can also depend on the world and workload, so meeting the bandwidth recommendation does not make a machine that misses the CPU, RAM, or GPU minimum compliant.
What the requirements do—and do not—tell you about performance
The table establishes compatibility thresholds, not a performance test. Neither Keen’s requirements page nor the Steam listing supplies an FPS promise tied to a particular resolution, graphics preset, world size, or mod set.
The recommended tier is therefore best treated as a safer general target, not a guaranteed “60 FPS” specification. A computer at the recommended level can still encounter a heavier workload in a large or complex world than in a small one. Conversely, a minimum-spec machine may be playable in a lighter scenario but have less headroom as simulation complexity increases.
Do not use the 35 GB figure to infer loading times, and do not use the 5 Mbit/s multiplayer recommendation to infer visual quality. Storage capacity, network bandwidth, CPU simulation work, and GPU rendering are separate constraints.
If your PC is below minimum
Upgrade the component that actually misses the requirement rather than replacing parts at random. Use this order as a decision guide:
- Graphics shortfall: compare a GPU upgrade first when the card is below the GTX 750 Ti/R9 270X class. Check power, physical fit, and system compatibility before buying.
- Processor shortfall: investigate the CPU when the model class, core count, or speed is below the i5-7600K reference. A CPU replacement may require a compatible motherboard and memory platform.
- Memory shortfall: upgrade when the machine has under 8 GB. Target 16 GB if you are trying to reach the recommended tier, and verify that the motherboard supports the planned modules.
- Storage shortfall: free or add capacity when less than 35 GB is available. Remove unneeded files only after confirming that the installation drive has enough working space.
- Operating-system or API shortfall: a 32-bit Windows installation or missing DirectX 11 support is a platform issue, not something a faster graphics card fixes.
Because no authoritative FPS benchmarks are provided, avoid buying a generic “gaming upgrade” on the assumption that it guarantees a particular frame rate. Match the upgrade to the failed requirement and to the rest of the system.
Quick decision checklist
- 64-bit Windows 10 is installed.
- The CPU meets the i5-7600K-class 3.80 GHz minimum or an AMD equivalent.
- At least 8 GB of RAM is installed.
- The GPU meets the GTX 750 Ti/R9 270X class or higher.
- DirectX 11 is available.
- At least 35 GB is free on the installation drive.
- A Steam or Xbox account and internet access are available for installation.
- For multiplayer, the connection is at least the 5 Mbit/s recommendation.
Pass every hardware and software item and your PC is inside the developer’s published minimum. Pass the recommended CPU, 16 GB memory, and GTX 1070/RX Vega 56-class graphics target as well, and you have more headroom for a smoother general experience—without treating that target as an FPS guarantee.
