Space Engineers world settings are per-save rules that determine who can join, how quickly resources are produced, how much players and inventories can carry, and how much construction a world permits. On a normal game screen you choose practical presets; a dedicated server exposes additional numerical fields and save-file options. The most important distinction is that world settings define the simulation, while dedicated-server settings define how that simulation is hosted and administered.

What world settings control
A Space Engineers save stores the rules for its simulation. Those rules cover access, player capacity, survival progression, production, inventory, floating-object cleanup, block limits and the PCU performance budget. Changing them can make a survival world deliberately slow and restrictive, or turn it into a fast-building sandbox.

These settings belong to the world rather than to one player. If several people join the same save, they use the same assembler, refinery, inventory and construction rules. A dedicated server loads that save and applies the same rules to every connected player, but its administration interface can expose controls that the ordinary game menu does not show.
Online mode and player capacity
Offline
Offline mode runs the save as single-player. No joining players are admitted, and the maximum-player control is disabled because there is no multiplayer capacity to allocate.

Private
Private mode allows players invited by the host. It is suitable for a controlled group where the host does not want the world discoverable to everyone.
Friends
Friends mode allows the host’s friends to find and join the session. It is less restrictive than invitations but does not make the world broadly visible.
Public
Public mode allows anyone to see and join the session, subject to the configured player ceiling and any platform permissions.
Maximum players is a ceiling, not a performance guarantee
In multiplayer modes, Max players sets the simultaneous-player limit. The practical number a host can support is lower if the machine, connection or world simulation cannot keep up. Large grids, scripts, physics activity, inventories and many loose objects all increase the work required per tick. Treat the field as an admission limit, then validate the real capacity under the world you intend to run.
Assembler, refinery and inventory multipliers
Assembler efficiency
The user-facing documentation lists three assembler presets: Realistic, x3 and x10. Raising the setting does two things at once: it increases production speed and reduces the input resources required for the output. A higher preset therefore changes both the time economy and the material economy; it is not merely a faster queue.

Use Realistic when mining and component planning are meant to be the main progression gates. x3 shortens routine production without removing the need to gather materials. x10 makes large construction projects practical quickly, but it also reduces the consequences of inefficient designs and stockpiling.

Refinery speed
Refinery speed also has Realistic, x3 and x10 presets. This setting changes the rate at which mined ore is processed. It does not, by itself, change the amount of ore obtained from a deposit; it determines how quickly the refinery converts available input into ingots.
Character and block inventory size
Inventory capacity has Realistic, x3, x5 and x10 presets. The multiplier applies to character inventories and block inventories, so it affects what a player can carry and what containers, machines or other inventory blocks can hold.
Be careful when reducing this value on an existing save. If inventories already contain more items than the new capacity permits, excess contents can be truncated and deleted. Back up the world before lowering the multiplier, empty vulnerable inventories, and then apply the change.
PCU, block limits and grid size
What PCU represents
Total PCU is a performance budget assigned to blocks in the world. Every block consumes part of that budget according to the game’s accounting, so a higher total allows more construction before the limit is reached. PCU is a server-simulation safeguard, not a measurement of storage space or a direct estimate of player count.

The World Settings page describes 100,000 PCU as a default in its context. The save-file reference lists a TotalPCU default of 600,000. Those figures are not interchangeable: they come from different interfaces or contexts. Check the active game version and the screen you are configuring before documenting or changing a default.
BlockLimitsEnabled modes
The SessionSettings reference exposes four values for BlockLimitsEnabled:
- NONE: disables PCU and block-type limits. In this mode, MaxGridSize and MaxBlocksPerPlayer are ignored as well.
- GLOBALLY: applies the configured block budgets to the whole session.
- PER_FACTION: shares the allowance among members of each faction.
- PER_PLAYER: gives each player an individual allowance.
Choose the scope that matches how people build. A global pool treats the world as one cooperative project. Faction scope prevents one faction from consuming another’s allowance while still supporting shared construction. Per-player scope is useful when individual building rights must be predictable. NONE maximizes freedom but removes the safeguards that protect simulation performance.
Max blocks per player
The documented range for Max blocks per player is 300 to 100,000 blocks. Destroyed or ground blocks refund the player’s allocation, so dismantling a structure returns its counted capacity rather than permanently consuming it.
Max Grid Size
Max Grid Size limits the number of blocks in one grid. The documented range is 100 to 50,000 blocks. This is separate from a player’s total allowance: a player might have unused personal capacity but still be unable to enlarge one grid beyond the grid-size ceiling. Both controls are ignored when BlockLimitsEnabled is NONE.

Floating objects and world cleanup
The floating-object limit controls how many loose objects remain in the world, including dropped debris, components, ingots, rocks and ores. The documented range is 16 to 1,024, with 100 shown as the default on the World Settings page (the page was accessed in 2026; its publication year is not stated).
A lower value keeps abandoned material from accumulating and reduces the simulation work caused by hundreds of uncollected entities. A higher value is useful for mining or construction sessions where players intentionally leave material outside containers, but it increases the chance that clutter will persist. If objects disappear sooner than expected, inspect this limit before assuming a save is corrupted.

The dedicated-server documentation states that numerical options can be set to any value. That flexibility is powerful but removes the guardrails of the normal presets. An extreme value can create a world that is technically accepted by the configuration but too expensive for the host to simulate reliably.

Before editing an existing world
- Make a manual copy of the save, especially before lowering inventory capacity or changing block-limit scope.
- Write down the current values so you can restore them if players report missing items or construction failures.
- Tell players which progression rules are changing; assembler, refinery and inventory multipliers alter the shared economy immediately.
Using the ordinary game interface
- Open the world-management or load-world screen and select the save you want to configure.
- Choose the edit or world-settings command rather than launching directly.
- Set Online mode first: Offline, Private, Friends or Public. If you select Offline, do not expect a Max players field to be available.
- Set Max players for a multiplayer mode, keeping the host’s hardware, bandwidth and world complexity in mind.
- Choose assembler efficiency, refinery speed and inventory-size presets. Review existing inventories before reducing capacity.
- Set floating-object limits, Max blocks per player, Max Grid Size and Total PCU according to the type of world you want to run.
- Save the settings, launch the world, and test a representative activity: queue production, process ore, move a full inventory and place blocks on a large grid.
Using a dedicated server
- Stop the server cleanly before editing its world or configuration files. Editing a live save risks overwriting your changes.
- Open the server configuration interface and load the target world.
- Use the Block Limits tab for block-limit configuration. Confirm whether the scope is NONE, GLOBALLY, PER_FACTION or PER_PLAYER.
- Enter numerical values deliberately. Dedicated-server controls may accept values outside the presets shown in the game interface.
- If editing the save directly, verify fields such as TotalPCU and the MaxGridSize and MaxBlocksPerPlayer values, then keep a backup of the original file.
- Restart the server and inspect the active configuration in the log or management interface. Have a test player join before announcing the change to everyone.
Choosing settings for common server styles

These are starting profiles, not guarantees. A public world with many large grids can require stricter budgets than a private world with the same nominal player count. Change one category at a time so you can identify which setting caused a performance or progression problem.
Troubleshooting common surprises
Players cannot join even though the server is running
Check Online mode first. Offline blocks multiplayer, Private requires invitation, and Friends limits discovery to the host’s friends. In a multiplayer mode, confirm that Max players has not been reached and that the host machine and network can handle the loaded world.
A player cannot place another block
Check the active BlockLimitsEnabled scope, the player’s remaining block allocation, the faction’s shared allowance or the global pool, depending on the selected mode. Then check Max Grid Size for the grid being enlarged. If the world uses NONE, those two limits should be ignored, so investigate another restriction or a server-side configuration mismatch.

That is expected when assembler efficiency is above Realistic: the preset increases speed and reduces required input resources. Refinery speed affects processing rate separately, so changing one does not automatically change the other.
Items disappeared after an inventory change
Lowering inventory size on an existing save can delete contents above the new capacity. Restore the backup, move items out of affected inventories, or raise the multiplier before trying again.
The server becomes unstable after raising limits
Large PCU totals, high grid-size ceilings and generous floating-object limits permit more simulation work. Revert to the last stable backup, reduce one limit at a time, and test with the actual grid sizes and player count expected on the server.
