A Space Engineers dedicated server that will not start usually fails in one of three places: the process cannot launch, a particular world or mod fails during loading, or the server is running but players cannot reach it. Start by launching a new default world with every mod and custom launch option disabled. That single comparison tells you whether to repair content or the installation and network. Then add mods back gradually, check the final lines of the logs, eliminate port conflicts, update and verify the dedicated-server files, and only afterward troubleshoot router and firewall reachability.

Identify the failure stage before changing anything
Write down exactly what you see on the host. A dedicated server that closes immediately is a process or installation problem. A console that remains on “Starting” or stops while loading one save is usually a world, mod, download, or resource problem. A server that stays running and accepts a local connection has completed startup; a remote player who cannot join is facing a network-reachability problem instead. These branches require different fixes, so changing mods, ports, and firewall rules at the same time removes the evidence you need.

Do not delete saves or reinstall before saving the logs from the failed attempt. A destructive change can erase the clue that identifies the cause.

Run the clean-world test
Keen support repeatedly asks administrators to start once without mods and without custom launch options on either the server or client. This is the highest-value diagnostic because it separates content failures from the server installation and infrastructure.
- Stop the server completely. Confirm that no second server window or background process is still running.
- Back up the current save folder and the server configuration. Keep the backup outside the active data directory if possible.
- In the dedicated-server configuration, create or select a new default world. Do not use the failing save for this test.
- Disable every mod. Also remove custom launch options from the server and, for the test, use a client with no unusual launch parameters.
- Start the server and wait for a stable, usable state rather than judging it by the first line printed in the console.
- Connect from the host or a client on the same local network. Record whether the world loads and whether the console remains running.
If this vanilla world fails in the same way, the problem is not proven to be a mod. Continue with process, installation, port, storage, and permissions checks. If it succeeds, the server executable and basic world creation are working; focus on the original save and its downloaded content.
When a mod or world causes the failure
Reintroduce content incrementally
Do not restore a large mod list in one operation. Stop the server, make a fresh backup, and add a small batch. Start again after each batch. If the server fails, divide that batch and test each half, or test individual mods when the list is short. The first mod whose return reproduces the failure is the leading suspect, not automatically the only problem.
This method catches obsolete mods, broken uploads, missing dependencies, circular references, and workshop downloads that never completed. A world can also contain data that is incompatible with the current game version even when the mod list appears unchanged. Keep the original save untouched while you test a copy.
Read the workshop and server logs
Open workshop_log.txt after stopping the failed attempt and inspect its final entries. The Space Engineers Wiki describes this log as the place to find the reason for workshop download failures. Compare the named item, dependency, or manifest operation with the mod you most recently enabled. The server log can show the corresponding load or definition error.
The workshop manifest file, appworkshop_244850.acf, is the index of downloaded workshop content. An error involving that manifest, an item ID, or a download operation points toward workshop data rather than router configuration. Preserve a copy of the log and manifest before attempting cleanup so you can show exactly what failed.

Repair workshop data carefully
First stop the server and back up the save and configuration. Only then consider removing a damaged workshop cache or manifest file. This is reversible only if your backup is complete, and it can force every enabled mod to download again. A redownload may take time and can fail again if the host has insufficient disk space or cannot reach the workshop service, so cache deletion is a later diagnostic, not the opening move.
After cleanup, start with the clean world and no mods. Confirm that the server is stable, then enable one known-good mod or a very small batch. If the clean test now fails, the cleanup exposed an installation or storage issue rather than fixing the original world.
Resolve launch, update, and port conflicts
Look for another process using the configured port
Only one server instance can use a given port at a time. A second Space Engineers server, an abandoned process after a crash, or another application may already be bound to the port saved in your configuration. Close other server instances and applications that could be using it, then start the intended instance again.
Check both sides of the configuration: the saved server settings and the command line that launches the executable. Keen’s setup documentation describes -port as a command-line override. If the command includes a different port from the configuration, clients may be sent to the wrong endpoint and a second process may collide with the first. Use one deliberate port for the test and record it before changing forwarding rules.

A conflict prevents the process from binding locally; a firewall or router problem allows the process to run but blocks incoming traffic. The log or operating-system error should determine which branch you follow.
Update both components
Out-of-date files can make a server fail before a world loads, especially after the game has been patched. Update the Space Engineers game files and the dedicated-server tool through Steam. Do not assume that updating the client also updated a separately installed dedicated-server tool; verify both entries.

After updating, use Steam’s exact command, “Verify integrity of tool files,” for the dedicated-server installation. Let the check finish before launching. If it replaces files, repeat the clean-world test rather than immediately restoring the old mod set. A successful verification does not prove that a corrupted save is healthy, but it does remove many installation-file variables.
Confirm the intended IP and data path
Make sure the launch command and saved configuration refer to the intended local IP address and port. Binding to an address that is no longer assigned to the host can prevent startup or make the process unreachable. If the server uses a configured data path, confirm that the account running it can read and write that location. A path on a full, disconnected, or permission-restricted drive can look like a world-loading failure.

Use the logs as a timeline
Save the complete server log, game log, and workshop log from the same failed attempt. The final lines are often the most useful because they show the last operation completed, but earlier warnings can explain why that operation failed. Include timestamps when comparing a download error with a server load error.
- A port-bind or address-in-use message points to a process conflict or mismatched
-portsetting. - A workshop item, dependency, manifest, or download message points to mod content or workshop storage.
- A file-not-found, access-denied, or write failure points to the installation or configured data path.
- A world-definition or entity-load error that appears only for one save points to that save or its mod set.
- A clean log with a stable console but failed remote joins points away from startup and toward UDP forwarding or firewall rules.
Do not report only “it is stuck.” Include the last several lines and the configuration used for that attempt. Keen support requests full logs when escalation is necessary, and a complete log prevents helpers from guessing which branch you already tested.
Separate startup from players’ inability to join
Space Engineers dedicated-server communication uses UDP. A server can therefore be fully started while remaining invisible or unreachable from outside the host network. Test locally first: if a client on the host or the same local network can connect while an external client cannot, stop troubleshooting world loading and work on reachability.
Check the configured UDP port
Read the port in the active server configuration and in the launch command. Treat the number in forwarding guides as an example, not a universal requirement. Keen support cites incoming UDP port 27016 for one setup; your configured port may differ. Forward the port you actually use, not a remembered default from another installation.

Forward the port to the correct host
In the router’s port-forwarding page, create an incoming UDP rule for the configured external port and direct it to the host’s current local IP address. A DHCP change can silently send an old rule to another device. Reserve the host’s local address or update the rule whenever the address changes. Do not forward a TCP-only rule when the game traffic requires UDP.
Allow the executable through the firewall
Permit the dedicated-server executable and the configured UDP port in the host firewall. Check rules for the active network profile; a rule that works on a private profile may not allow traffic when the host is classified differently. Keen support specifically advises ensuring the required dedicated-server ports are not blocked by the firewall or router.
Test from the right network
A local test and an external test answer different questions. Local success proves that the process is running and the world can load. An external test, performed from a different internet connection, checks router forwarding and the public path. Testing from inside the same network can be affected by a router’s hairpin behavior and should not be treated as proof that internet players can connect.

The server installation, saves, logs, and downloaded mods all consume disk space. A nearly full volume can prevent a workshop item from completing, stop a log from being written, or make a save fail during loading. Check free space on the volume that holds the configured data path, not just the system drive. Leave room for the existing save, a backup copy, new logs, and the complete mod downloads.
Confirm that the account running the dedicated server can create and modify files in the installation and data directories. A permission change, moved drive, or disconnected network path can produce failures that look like missing content. Correct the path or permissions before reinstalling; reinstalling to a location the process cannot write will reproduce the problem.
Close unrelated server instances and applications while diagnosing. This reduces port collisions and makes resource use easier to interpret, but avoid treating a generic “PC optimizer” as a fix. The documented checks are specific: free storage, valid paths, writable directories, current files, and readable logs.
A reversible recovery sequence
Use this order when you need a concise runbook. It starts with tests that preserve data and postpones destructive actions.

- Update the game and the dedicated-server tool, then run Steam’s “Verify integrity of tool files.”
- Confirm that no other process uses the selected port and that the command line and configuration agree.
- Launch a new default world with all mods and custom launch options disabled.
- If the clean world fails, stay on the installation, process, port, storage, and permissions branch and preserve the new logs.
- If it succeeds, restore the original save as a copy and re-enable mods in small batches, checking
workshop_log.txtafter each failure. - Only after startup works locally, configure UDP forwarding and firewall access for the actual port.
- If workshop data is demonstrably damaged, stop the server, preserve a backup, remove the relevant cache or manifest, and redownload deliberately.
At each step, change one category of variable. That makes a successful restart meaningful and lets you undo the last change when the problem returns.
When local administration is the blocker
Some failures are not game-content failures at all. If the machine cannot remain online, the router cannot accept a forwarding rule, or you cannot administer firewall and operating-system permissions, a managed host can remove those infrastructure tasks. Keen’s official setup information identifies GTX Gaming as the official PC server host. Treat hosting as an escalation for uptime and network administration, not as a cure for a broken save or obsolete mod.
Before moving a world, reproduce the clean-world test and keep the logs. A host that starts a vanilla world but fails on your saved world still needs the same mod and save diagnosis. Conversely, a hosted server that starts but is unreachable still requires the correct UDP port and configuration; changing machines does not make an incorrect port-forwarding assumption valid.
How to decide what the evidence means

Final checklist before escalation
- State whether the process closes, remains in Starting, fails on one world, or runs but cannot be joined.
- Include the game version and dedicated-server tool version after updating.
- Report whether a fresh default world starts with no mods and no custom launch options.
- List the configured IP and UDP port, noting any
-portoverride. - Say whether a local client can connect.
- Attach the complete server and game logs plus the end of
workshop_log.txt. - Note free disk space, the data path, and whether another process was using the port.
- Describe any cache or manifest cleanup only after confirming that a backup exists.
The fastest reliable path is therefore diagnostic rather than destructive: prove a vanilla world, isolate content by incremental restoration, repair files and port conflicts, and only then open the UDP path for outside players. The final log lines and the clean-world comparison provide the evidence needed to choose the next fix instead of guessing.
