Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf a Space Engineers dedicated server runs without mods but fails or behaves like a vanilla world when mods are added, start with the server log and the exact save’s mod list. Subscribing to a Workshop item in Steam only makes it available to the account; the mod must also be listed under World Settings > Mods for the world loaded by the server. The usual fixes are correcting the world entry and service ID, switching an incorrectly configured EOS network to Steam, repairing the Workshop cache or manifest while the server is stopped, and isolating conflicts one mod at a time.
Godlike.Host offers hosted Space Engineers servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
What “mods not working” means
Several different failures are described with the same phrase. A server may refuse to start, stop while loading a save, report that it cannot download a mod, start successfully but show no mod effects, or work for PC players while failing for console players. Each symptom points to a different part of the loading chain:

- World configuration: the save does not contain the mod in its active list, even though somebody subscribed to it.
- Service and identifier: the entry uses the wrong service (Steam Workshop versus mod.io), an incorrect numeric ID, or a network type that cannot reach the service.
- Download state: the Workshop item, local cache, or Workshop manifest is incomplete or corrupt.
- Runtime compatibility: a dependency is missing, two mods change the same definition, or the mod targets a different game build.
- Platform capability: an Xbox or PlayStation host cannot execute user code, regardless of the subscription status.
Do not keep restarting a server in a loop. Preserve the evidence, identify which class you have, and then make one controlled change at a time.
Start with the dedicated-server log
The first diagnostic artifact is the complete dedicated-server log. Keep the whole file, not just the final line: the useful error often appears earlier than the shutdown message. The separate workshop_log.txt is particularly valuable when a download fails because it records Workshop activity and the numeric item IDs involved.

In the log, search for these exact strings and nearby lines:
Unable to download modsk_EResultTimeoutMod failedReference issue detectedModPath file doesn't exist- XML parsing, definition-loading, or compile exceptions
- The numeric Workshop ID printed beside the failing item
Record the world name or save identifier, every mod ID, the first error in the chain, and whether the server can start the same world with all mods removed. A complete log block is what Keen support or a mod author needs to distinguish a network timeout from a broken definition.
1. Confirm that the loaded world enables the mod
Open the exact save that the dedicated server is loading, then go to World Settings > Mods. The mod must appear in that list. A Steam subscription does not activate a mod in an existing world; it only makes the item available for download. If the mod is absent, add it, save the world, and restart the server.
When the game displays dependencies for a selected mod, accept the dependency additions. Dependencies are normally added automatically, but a manually edited or old save can still contain an incomplete list. Check that the dependency IDs remain present after saving and reopening the world.
There are two different operations that are often confused:
- Subscribe: associates the Workshop item with a Steam account and lets the client obtain its files.
- Enable in the world: writes the mod entry into the save’s active mod list so the server loads it.
If a mod appears subscribed but has no visible effect, return to this screen before changing files. An absent world entry is the simplest explanation and does not require cache deletion.
2. Check the service name, numeric ID, and network type
Dedicated-server mod entries identify both a service and an item number. Support documentation describes the forms as Steam:id and mod.io:id. Verify that the world uses the service where the mod actually exists and that the number is the exact Workshop or mod.io ID, not a URL, collection ID, or copied display name.

A particularly confusing case occurs when a world depends on Steam Workshop content but the server is configured for EOS. In the server’s network settings, set Network Type to Steam, save, and retry. A Keen support case documented a modded server that would not start until its defaulted EOS value was changed to Steam. This setting matters even when the server itself is otherwise reachable.
Use this checklist before downloading anything again:
- The world entry begins with the correct service prefix.
- The numeric ID matches the individual mod, including all digits.
- The server’s Network Type matches that service; use Steam for Steam Workshop content.
- The same ID is not listed twice under different services.
- After saving the world, the entry is still present when you reopen World Settings.
3. Verify the Steam account and dedicated-server update state
The account used for the subscription must be active and still subscribed to every required item. Keen’s troubleshooting guidance specifically warns against switching Steam accounts while troubleshooting: the dedicated client may be trying to obtain content that belongs to another account.
Recommended Free Tools
Also check for a running SpaceEngineersDedicated session in Steam. If Steam left that session open, terminate it before expecting Workshop updates. A locked or active dedicated-client process can leave old files in place and make a newly published mod appear unchanged.
After confirming the account:
- Open the Steam account that owns the subscriptions.
- Confirm each required mod is still subscribed and visible to that account.
- Close any leftover dedicated-server or Steam update process.
- Start the dedicated server again and watch
workshop_log.txtfor the same numeric IDs.
If the log now shows a successful download but the mod still has no effect, return to the world list and conflict checks rather than repeating the subscription steps.
4. Repair a failed or timed-out Workshop download
Messages such as Unable to download mods and k_EResultTimeout indicate that the server did not obtain usable Workshop content. Stop the server before deleting cache files or rebuilding the manifest. Editing a live cache while the process is reading it can leave a second, harder-to-diagnose corruption.
Redownload one affected mod
- Stop the dedicated server and verify that its process has exited.
- Use the Workshop content directory
Steamsteamappsworkshopcontent244850. - Find the subdirectory whose name is the failing numeric Workshop ID.
- Delete only that affected mod directory.
- Start the server and let Steam obtain a clean copy.
- Check
workshop_log.txtand the main log for a successful download followed by normal loading.
The number 244850 is Space Engineers’ Steam application ID, so it is the expected parent directory for this cache. Do not delete unrelated application folders while diagnosing one item.

Reset the Steam client libraries used by the dedicated server
The dedicated-server troubleshooting guide documents replacing these three files in DedicatedServer64 when Workshop communication remains broken:
steamclient64.dlltier0_s64.dllvstdlib_s64.dll
Use matching files from the current Steam client or dedicated-server installation, keep a backup of the originals, and stop the server before replacing them. A mismatched DLL set can create a new startup failure, so record what you changed and restore the backup if the server no longer launches.
Rebuild the Workshop manifest only as a broad reset
For persistent Workshop failures, the guide also documents deleting appworkshop_244850.acf so Steam can rebuild the manifest. This is broader than deleting one mod directory: it can cause every subscribed item to be reconciled again. Back up the server configuration and note the current mod IDs first, stop the server, remove the manifest, then restart and allow the download process to complete without interruption.
Check firewall, antivirus, and the server port
Keen’s timeout guidance recommends checking firewall and antivirus rules and allowing SpaceEngineersDedicated.exe. Confirm that security software is not quarantining DLLs or blocking Steam traffic. The same guidance cites 27016 as the default server port; if you changed it, make sure the firewall rule and any router forwarding use the same value. A port rule does not repair a missing Workshop file, but an over-restrictive rule can turn a normal download into a timeout.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →5. Separate dependency, conflict, and compatibility problems
A server can start vanilla and fail as soon as one mod is added even when the network is healthy. Common causes include a bad download, a missing dependency, a definition conflict, or a mod that is incompatible with the current game build.
Use a one-mod baseline
- Make a copy of the save or use a test world with the same server settings.
- Remove the suspect set and add one known-good mod.
- Start the server and confirm that the mod loads and has its expected effect.
- Stop the server, add the remaining mods in small groups, and restart after each group.
- When the failure returns, divide that group again until one item or pair is responsible.
This method distinguishes a bad item from an interaction. It also creates a clean log showing the smallest set that reproduces the problem.
Interpret reference errors
Reference issue detected usually warrants a dependency or ordering check. Confirm that every declared dependency is in the world’s mod list and that the IDs match the intended service. Test the dependency and the main mod together in the one-mod baseline, then add unrelated content.

Treat load order as an experiment, not a universal fix
Two mods can change the same definition while using different filenames. The later definition may override the earlier one, or the combination may fail entirely. Move one mod ahead of the other, record the result, and then test again with the smallest reproducible set. If changing order has no effect, report both mod links and the complete log to the authors; do not keep shuffling a large list without recording each result.
Allow for game-build changes
Complex script or definition mods can break after a Space Engineers update. A mod that worked yesterday may now throw XML, compile, or missing-file errors even though its Workshop page still loads. Compare the date of the game update with the mod’s latest update, test the item alone, and provide the author with the exact error block and game version. Do not assume that a successful download means the code is compatible.
6. Clear stale or corrupted local content
Renamed files, leftovers from an update, and partially written content can break a mod while leaving its Workshop subscription intact. The clean-download procedure above removes the affected cache directory and lets Steam recreate it. If the same error returns after a fresh download, the problem is more likely an incompatibility, dependency, or author-side packaging issue than a stale local file.
For script-heavy mods, capture the game log after the clean download. Include the exact mod ID, the world’s complete mod list, and the first compile or file-path exception. Authors can often identify a missing renamed file from that information; a screenshot of only the final “server stopped” line is rarely sufficient.

Xbox and PlayStation hosts cannot execute user code. A script mod that requires code execution therefore cannot run on a console-hosted world, even if console players can see the Workshop item or join a server.
A PC dedicated server can support a script mod for console clients only when the script compiles and runs server-side. If the mod requires client-side compilation or client-executed code, console players will still fail. In that case, choose one of these supported paths:
- Host the world on a PC dedicated server and verify that the specific mod’s script compiles on the server.
- Replace the script mod with a no-script or programmable-block alternative that meets the same need.
- Remove the mod for console-hosted worlds rather than trying repeated cache resets.
This is a platform boundary, not a Workshop download defect.

Self-hosting versus managed hosting for mod troubleshooting
Hosting location changes which fixes you can perform. A self-hosted PC gives you direct access to files and processes; a managed host may simplify uptime but can limit the controls needed for a Workshop failure. Compare the service against the actual failure points before moving a world.

Whichever model you use, retain the world’s mod IDs and a recent complete log. Those two records make recovery possible even when the server panel hides the underlying files.
What to send when escalating
Contact Keen support or the mod author only after recording a reproducible test. Include:
- The complete relevant server log, not only a screenshot.
workshop_log.txtwhen a download or timeout is involved.- The world or save identifier and the full active mod list.
- Every numeric Workshop or mod.io ID, including dependencies.
- The server’s Network Type and whether the host is PC, Xbox, or PlayStation.
- The exact sequence that reproduces the failure, such as “vanilla starts; adding ID 123… stops during load.”
- Any cache directory, DLL, or manifest change already made.
Do not omit the “working” comparison. Showing that the world starts with no mods, or with one known-good mod, narrows the investigation far more than stating that the server is broken.
A clean recovery sequence
When you need a concise order of operations, use this sequence and stop as soon as the problem is resolved:
- Stop restart loops and save the complete log plus
workshop_log.txt. - Open the loaded save and verify every required item under World Settings > Mods.
- Check each entry’s
Steam:idormod.io:idservice and numeric ID. - Set Network Type to Steam when the world uses Steam Workshop content.
- Confirm the subscribed Steam account is active and close leftover dedicated-client sessions.
- Stop the server, delete only the affected directory under
Steamsteamappsworkshopcontent244850, and retry. - If timeouts persist, check antivirus, firewall rules, and port 27016; consider the documented DLL replacement or manifest rebuild with backups.
- Run one known-good mod, then add the rest in small groups to expose conflicts or dependencies.
- For console hosts, remove user-code mods or move the world to a PC server that supports server-side compilation.
- Escalate with the complete logs, world ID, mod IDs, platform, and reproducible steps.
This sequence keeps configuration, connectivity, files, and compatibility separate. It also leaves you with evidence for the next update instead of an unexplained series of deletions and restarts.
