Yes—but not in the sense that beans make gold. Researchers used soybean extract to help turn gold salts into gold nanoparticles and stabilize the resulting particles. The soybean method was reported in a 2008 peer-reviewed paper; a Chemistry World headline, “Soybeans strike nanogold,” had appeared the year before.
What “soybeans strike nanogold” means
The phrase comes from Lewis Brindley’s 6 November 2007 Chemistry World report. It describes research into using soybean extract in nanoparticle synthesis, not a way to obtain metallic gold from soybeans. The process starts with gold salts; the extract helps produce and coat nanoscale gold particles.

What the soybean study did
Shukla and co-authors published “Soybeans as a Phytochemical Reservoir for the Production and Stabilization of Biocompatible Gold Nanoparticles” in Small, volume 4, issue 9, pages 1425–1436. Wiley lists the paper’s first publication date as 1 September 2008, and PubMed records it as published in September 2008. The authors describe treating gold salts with soybean extracts to produce gold nanoparticles. Their abstract calls it “an unprecedented green process,” but that wording is the authors’ characterization of a laboratory method, not proof of environmental benefit across a full production lifecycle.

The proposed roles are distinct: antioxidant phytochemicals in soy act as reducing agents, helping convert gold ions from the salts into particles, while soybean proteins and other phytochemicals help coat and stabilize the newly formed particles. The paper reports stability tests in vitro in buffers and solutions including saline, histidine, human serum albumin (HSA), and cysteine. It also reports results from an MTT assay. These are laboratory findings; they do not establish that the particles are safe or effective in people. Read the paper record at Wiley or consult its PubMed record.

- 12" POCKET SLUICE BOX WITH MINERS MOSS: A rubber riffle mat and miners moss trap heavy gold in a sluice small enough to carry anywhere. Use it to sample-test a gravel bar before hauling in big gear, clean up concentrates at home, or show kids how a sluice works.
- PATENTED SPIRAL RIFFLE GOLD PANS (US 12,582,996): Deep-walled 9" and 11" pans built like a classic prospector's pan, not a shallow dish. Aggressive riffles knock out light material fast, and the spiral riffles hold the fine flakes that flat-bottom pans wash away during finish panning.
- BLACK SAND MAGNET, SNUFFER BOTTLE & MAGNIFIER TWEEZERS: The separator magnet pulls black sand from your concentrates, the snuffer bottle vacuums gold flakes straight off the pan, and stainless magnifier tweezers let you spot and pick out flakes too small to grab by hand. Three glass gold vials hold the day's take.
- DESIGNED BY KEYESVILLE, CALIFORNIA PROSPECTORS: Sluice Fox kits are designed by prospectors who learned to pan in historic Keyesville, in California's Kern River gold country, and assembled in our own warehouses near the Sierra and Appalachian mountains. A gift that gets a family outdoors, from a brand that has been in the creek, not just a catalog.
How the soybean paper differs from the gum-arabic study
The 2007 news report also referred to a separate study of gold nanoparticles stabilized with gum arabic, including in vivo pharmacokinetics and X-ray contrast imaging. That paper was published in February 2007; it was not the soybean-extract synthesis study, which followed in 2008. The two publications concern different biological materials and should not be treated as a head-to-head comparison of interchangeable products or safety. PubMed’s gum-arabic paper record identifies that separate study.

What the findings do—and do not—show
- Shown: Soybean extract was used in a published laboratory method to produce gold nanoparticles, with soy phytochemicals reported to help reduce gold salts and stabilize particle surfaces.
- Not shown: The work does not demonstrate that eating soy makes gold, that the method is a safe home experiment, or that the resulting particles treat disease.
- Not established by a patent: A US patent record describes soy- or lentil-stabilized gold nanoparticles and a method for making them. A patent is evidence of a filing and its claims, not evidence that a product reached the market, received regulatory authorization, or proved medically effective. See the patent record.
