What happened?
Contemporary reports on 2 and 3 October 2026 said Southeastern cancelled some services and withdrew trains for checks after bedbugs were reported. Anadolu Agency, citing The Telegraph, linked the reports to trains associated with West Marina train care depot near Hastings; that location is reported context, not independent confirmation that the depot itself was infested. The coverage described disruption on Friday and earlier reports dating back to 22 September.

The figures differ by report and should not be treated as one definitive count. London Streets said four trains had been reported as having bedbugs, with two confirmed and cleaned before returning to service. It also reported that two carriages were locked on a train after a driver reported insects at one end. Another account carrying Southeastern’s position said two trains were taken out of service for checks, found clear and returned to service. These accounts describe different reports and checks; they do not establish a final count of affected trains or cancellations.

According to Southeastern’s account as relayed by news outlets, confirmed bedbugs were found in two driver cabs, and none had been identified in passenger areas. A report that carriages were locked or trains checked is not evidence that bedbugs were confirmed in passenger seating or other passenger areas. The available reporting also does not establish that passengers were bitten or exposed.

What did Southeastern say about inspections?
London Streets reported comments from Oly Turner, identified as Southeastern’s head of drivers. Turner said: “When we receive reports such as these, we check trains thoroughly before they are put back into service when given the all clear.” The outlet also quoted him saying: “We have a great relationship with our drivers, who have helped hugely in cooperating with us over these isolated incidents.” Reports described cleaning and checks before some trains returned, but they do not give a complete operational timeline or establish a wider risk assessment.

Does this mean the wider rail network is affected?
No wider-network conclusion follows from the Southeastern reports. For historical context only, ITV News Meridian reported in October 2023 that the Rail Delivery Group said operators were assessing prevention measures, including more frequent carriage cleaning or specialist equipment; that report said there were then no confirmed bedbug sightings on England’s rail network. It does not show which measures Southeastern adopted or what is in place now. Separately, a Greater London Authority record last updated in November 2024 described TfL’s cleaning and pest-control arrangements and said it was not aware of confirmed bedbug sightings on its network at that time. TfL is a different operator, and those dated details do not describe Southeastern’s 2026 response.
