That is a maker-reported analytics figure, not an independently verified result: his Product Hunt discussion gives neither the number of users nor the measurement window, and it does not show that the onboarding choices caused the outcome.
What SoundGate says it did
SoundGate Guitar is described on Product Hunt as an app for guitar practice, with real-time visual feedback, an interactive fretboard and an AI tutor. In a Product Hunt discussion, maker Aren Barseghyan said the team checked its analytics after launch and found onboarding drop-off below 1%. He described a short flow built around three principles:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Zero Fluff: remove questions that do not directly improve the user’s immediate experience.
- UX over marketing: prioritize what a person needs to get started over information useful to marketing.
- Vibe is a feature: make the onboarding feel consistent with the app’s musical character.
The team retained questions it said were needed to route people to the right flow and give the AI tutor context. Barseghyan also said the team had not set a numeric drop-off target in advance; it focused on the experience.
Where to draw the line between user needs and marketing data
A practical test is whether an answer changes what happens next for the user. If it determines the appropriate setup path or supplies context the tutor needs to respond usefully, asking early can be justified. If it is mainly useful for later segmentation or marketing, it may be better to defer it until after the user has received value.
#1 Best Overall
This is a decision rule, not a finding that every question with immediate utility belongs in onboarding. Each added question asks for attention and may delay the first useful interaction. The relevant trade-off is whether the information improves the start enough to warrant that cost.
What the under-1% figure does—and does not—show
The figure comes from Barseghyan’s account of SoundGate analytics. The discussion does not state the denominator, observation period, precise definition of “drop-off,” instrumentation, or acquisition-source mix. It therefore cannot be compared reliably with another product’s rate or treated as a general onboarding benchmark.

Nor does it establish that the short flow produced the reported result. Barseghyan said the team did not run a different onboarding version in parallel, making a direct comparison difficult. He described completion as steady across the steps, with no single bottleneck, and said the team considered the brief, high-value flow the main driver. That is the maker’s interpretation of the analytics, not a controlled causal result.

For teams applying the same idea, useful evaluation axes include completion at each step, time to the first useful practice interaction, and whether each collected answer changes routing or tutor behavior. These are suggested measures for a future evaluation; they were not reported as results from SoundGate’s launch.
Rank #3
Track the question’s purpose alongside its cost: what decision it enables, when that decision must be made, and whether the information can instead be requested after the user has experienced the product. That makes the UX-versus-marketing choice concrete without assuming that fewer questions always produce better outcomes.
